Whoever thinks the bass player is the musical non-entity who stands at the back of the stage like a statue just to make up the number.......well watch this guy in action and think again. Gimme the bass over the electric any day of any week of any year. Amazing sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@jwabbit777 Been diggin Larry for years. He is the originator of slap. There are others maybe faster like Stan and Wooten but LG is bad to the bone. HUGE sound. Great bass. Alembics and Warwicks have much more tinny sounds and are excellent basses, but this one has bass balls. My 40 yr old P bass sounds this good, I just wish I had his rig to run thru. If your near Dallas maybe we can jam. I'm Ole skool rock too but love to get funky.
@doctor345678 do you know what year it is? i havent seen one with the neck pickup slanted like that and with the neck and body matching paint jobs might it be a custom one?
@doctor345678 Nope. He's playing an all-white "Moon" brand bass (Made in Japan) with Bartolini pickups in this video. He named that bass "Moonshine." He used to play Fender Jazz in the 1970s.
for all who dont know this man created the slap bass technique...none other. if you think it was that guy over there or that one down here your wrong. it is him. the one and only LARRY GRAHAM....
When the Bass makes you tell it twice it's time to slap it... His bass will never learn or listen... He is the MAN... Larry has got some real deal big time skills... "I like that"...
OMG, this man was my GOD.... where I come from, the funk belong to anyone that respected it in there everyday life. Thank You Larry Graham and many others like you.
@mramph Hahaha!!! That's funny but... Truly it's the other way around! If you are black and everythinb you own is white.. you are definitely A SLAVE!!
I expect him to start danceing like mad throught out the video. like legit back flips. he could probably manage it to. This is also why no self respecting basist uses a pic.
I never expected a heavy metal treatment of the Phantom Of the Opera theme to close out the slapping. Freakish hands like Hendrix. It looks like he could use a few more strings but then it wouldn't sound like such classic FUNK.
This is taken from his intructional video filmed in Japan and entitled SUPER SLAPPING BASS; Not sure though that it's still in print. The whole video is not really 'instructional' as Larry almost never stops and keeps funking you up LOOL!
Far as I can tell, Larry invented the slap bass technique. Been copied, never equalled (OK, Victor Wooten comes real close), but Victor should have been a guitar player, Larry was always pure bass.
While acoustic bass players have always - particularly jazz musicians - slapped their bass I do not think Larry had this in mind. See Part 3. His slapping and thumping served as a replacement for lacking a drummer. He also thought that playing bass would only be a temporary thing for he was going to go back to playing lead guitar, hence the position. As it has been said, necessity is the mother of innovation/invention.
