imy cg5 carries a 11 inch schmidt and my noise is nowhere near that people say there cg5 is loud mine is pretty quite dotn know why everyones moutn is loud like that never had a problem and never been lod and i carry alot of extra weight on it im putting my six inch refractor on it and puting my 11 inch on a cgem or a eQ 6 atlast with the stepper motor but never once have i had any lous noises on the cg5..
Welcome to straight cut gears. When straight cut's get a load on them they torque away from one another and with cheaper gears the Lash goes way out of whack and they get noisy fast when on the right resistance to the gears. This is normal mate, if it's excessie more than others it may be somethings out a little, othewrwise it it works ok then no biggie if you can bear it. This is why cars don't run straight cut differentials, you could imagine the noise going 100mph. Cheers, IC.
It sounds like a problem with one of the worm gears...??? If you have a heavy object or a friction point the gears will become damaged. Its like a transmission. If the speed of the gears cannot grab the teeth of the gear it will spin. This results in a higher pitched noise. This sounds like a real problem.
i own a cg-5 and i want to kno if the Lock Levers need to be tight to allow for the mount to move, because without them tight my RA axis doesnt move but my DEC axis is fine without the lock lever tight.
Maybe you can't tell from the video but it seems to slew normally then begins to go faster and sound higher pitched then just stops. After that the Goto no longer is aligned. I've had it boxed up for awhile using my bother's CG5 since he bought an Atlas mount. I think I'll pull it out this weekend and mess around with it again.
Hey there Imus, to me it sounds like it's in a bind. It is possible for the gears to be too tight. There are some simple adjustments you can make on the tolerance of the gears. The only formula is...Don't make them too loose, nor too tight. Is it only the RA motor? BTW, mine makes a very smooth Whirr. And is not excessively loud. I've owned two
Yeah, only on the RA. I'm thinking about sending it in but I'm not sure what they can do. I've cleaned and re-greased with GOOD synthetic grease. I'll try adjusting the gear/motor and see if I can change things.
I had just rebuilt it and re-greased with stuff recommended by many astronomers. *Shrugs shoulders* I think I'm going to send it in to the manufacturer.
Do understand that this mount is noisy to begin with, not while tracking, but when you use the goto. I read about it on many forums, heres one example at the Cloudynights forum, Google for:
"CG-5 GT noisy goto, does it have a quiet mode?"
You know, when people say in that thread things like "neighbours close and in summer with windows open it might annoy them" you get a good indication as how noisy it is."

sounds like normal CG5 to me. Mine pretty noisy when slewing, especially on 9.
as for the the stopping, it's possible you tightened the mount too much and the worm is binding on something.
I did the mount refurb and regrease and I ended up tweaking it for a good 20-30 minutes after.
just for kicks you may want to do a factory default on it.

Can you make a video with this mount when its tracking, not slewing? Just to show people how much noise really comes out.

I do agree this question.

When it is tracking it is quiet. When slewing it is noisy indeed.

CG5's, I still have and use one.
