@cosybully In southern Greenland, where this was filmed, the climate would be very much like arctic Canada or Alaska - that means cold, with temperatures hardly never getting into the 70s (f). Most international flights are out of Europe (Denmark) but there are flights from Canada too (Iqaluit in Nunavut) though not as frequent. There's not a single motel in the country (no highways/roads between towns - boats and flights only).
@mcpartridgeboy Hahaaa, that's a first! I don't think there's a country where you can't get a hold of some form of illegal drug. Drugs are not so widespread in Greenland - the island being as isolated as it is. I have no clue about what punishment you get but I'm sure it partly depends on the amount you have on you when caught.
@glory2die Thanks for the nice comment. To the best of my knowledge I don't think conventional racism is a big thing in Greenland. The country is simply too multi-ethnic for that. Is there a strong sense of nationality in Greenland, yes. To the point of racism, no.
@ocram3200 Ever since the time of the Vikings Greenland has had strong bonds with Scandinavia, especially Denmark since much of Scandinavia was under Danish rule at the time. They, the Vikings, were also the ones to call the island by its name: Greenland. I guess you could call it pre-television advertisement... ;-)
I wish I could go there one day. So peaceful, so far away from the world as we know it. Screw all the warm, lazy tourists destinations. This is way more fascinating.
i've always been somewhat fascinated with greenland...it's such a massive body of land, yet so few people seem to visit...is much of it uninhabitable? is there a main city...what is the nightlife like....what do most people do for a living? are there colleges there? what languages are spoken? are there any black people there? sorry for all the questions, just curious
@MurphGiovanni Greenland is covered by the second largest ice sheet in the world, so yea much of it is uninhabitable (80% in fact). The official language is Greenlandic (an Inuit dialect) but the country is mostly bilingual (Danish). There are a few collages, one university with a limited number of subjects, so young people have to go abroad for an education. 99% of the people in Greenland are Inuit and/or Danish. The night life is, as most other places, OK - it's no London or NYC 'course. :-)
@MurphGiovanni The main city is Nuuk. It's also the capital, it's the largest city with a population of around 15,000. The people who live in cities are not really Iniut, since they do normal city jobs. But, the Iniut population is still strong, with most of them fishing to feed themselves.
I have a teacher whose last name is Jorgensen and she says her ancestors are from Denmark and it kind of reminds me of your youtube account name inukjorgensen.
they should set up a proffesional football league here. they could use icebergs as pitches and the seals, polar bears and penguins can make up the crowd
One of Greenland's most important natural resources is an abundance of fresh water. This will play an important role in the future. Loved the stone carvings, there's something mystical about them. Is the Niviarsiaq native to Greenland?
@JackRussellTerrier2 The Niviarsiaq is the national flower of Greenland due to the simple fact that it is the only flower that grows all around the country - from the south to the very north of the island.
@gotch09 Yes, but the most populated city in the country is the capital Nuuk. It has a population of around 15,000 people. Compared to Paris with 11 million it is very unpopulated. Greenland is the least densely populated country in the world. This doesn't mean that it is the least populated though.
@yoshjedi And gee, here I was thinkin' that Greenland was just one cold iceberg! Did you know that when I mentioned Greenland to somebody at work this week they looked at me like I had to be making this place up? They didn't believe Greenland even existed. I swear, it's true.
Auzzie is some 2,5x bigger than Greenland. According to Wikipedia Auzzie is 7.6 million square kilometres (world's smallest continent) - Greenland a mere 2.2. Size and climate decide what can be called an island, and apparently Auzzie can't. A search for the difference on Google will give you more. Thanks for the interest.
It varies quite a bit. In Qaqortoq in southern Greenland, where most of this was filmed, the average temp is 3 deg. above the point of freezing (celcius) for the whole year. Summer days at 10+ are common but rarely around 20. Winters can be cold and temps range from 20 below to 10 above the point of freezing (coldest month has an average of 3 degrees below in Qaqortoq).
Last time i checked the temperature of qaqortoq and it was like 12C (55F), with like crazy 60km/h wind... that's even warmer than where i come from, new york!!!
p.s. i'd like to visit greenland. i think it's a beautiful place

Short question, long answer. Greenland covers several climate zones so it's not a simple matter. In southern Greenland, where this footage was shot, I guess the average all-year temp is above the point of freezing - maybe 3-5 degrees celcius. That said, 25 below in winter and 15-20 degrees in summer are not unheard of. Lately though, this has changed and the weather is VERY unpredictable. Climate change???...
One time I flew over Greenland and it was the most beautiful landscape i'd ever seen! Ever since then I've always wanted to go hiking and kayaking (to explore the awesome coastlines) there. What an amazing place, even from 30,000 feet!
I think I must have flown over Greenland too...in January I went over some place that was snow as far as the eye could see. I love looking out at the different lands when on a plane.
Well its not entirely true - in the most northern part of Greenland I think they go something like 2 months without sunlight, in the south the sun shines for a minimum of 4 hours a day during the darkest of winters. Vice versa during summers. The summers without night and winters without sun only occur north of the Arctic Circle (66° 33′39″), leaving the southern part of Greenland untouched by the phenomenon.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL and SERENE! I'd love to visit there sometime. I talk to Ham Radio operators (Amateur Radio) in Greenland from time to time, and was invited there by one of them.
they seem pretty isolated there...do greenlanders have access to world media news? do they have a nightlife? they seem very different from other nations
Yes, most Greenlanders have access to media like the internet, films, and TV, though the number of channels to choose from is limited to say the least. Whether it is isolated or not is a matter of debate: geographically it is remote and getting from one place to another can be a hassle (it is the arctic where the weather is in charge + long distances), there is not much nightlife (apart from local pubs in each town) - but that does not seem to be a problem. Certainly not if you're used to it.
Greenlandic, an Inuit/Eskimo dialect closely related to the Inuit languages in Canada and Alaska, is the official language of the country though Danish is also very widespread (Greenland is a former colony of Denmark and is still a part of the Kingdom of Denmark).
very green...

Beautiful!
Hey is it true that in Greenalnd they have 6 months of days with no nights and the rest is 6 months without any light?
AndPeriwinkle 3 years ago 2
Thanks.

I talk to Ham Radio operators (Amateur Radio) in Greenland from time to time, and was invited there by one of them.

they seem pretty isolated there...do greenlanders have access to world media news? do they have a nightlife? they seem very different from other nations
xtinnna 3 years ago 3
Yes, most Greenlanders have access to media like the internet, films, and TV, though the number of channels to choose from is limited to say the least. Whether it is isolated or not is a matter of debate: geographically it is remote and getting from one place to another can be a hassle (it is the arctic where the weather is in charge + long distances), there is not much nightlife (apart from local pubs in each town) - but that does not seem to be a problem. Certainly not if you're used to it.

What language do they speak in Greenland?
hardrockcoco 3 years ago
Greenlandic, an Inuit/Eskimo dialect closely related to the Inuit languages in Canada and Alaska, is the official language of the country though Danish is also very widespread (Greenland is a former colony of Denmark and is still a part of the Kingdom of Denmark).

Fantastic. Greenland needs to hire you to do their tourism films and ad spots.
Elegant production values.
