WiseGuy784, it was David Giler who (I believe) said that at the Dallas test screening, an usher fainted when Ian Holm's head came off. (Ron Cobb also said the same.) I did like Ridley Scott's linear explantion concerning artifical life: he made ash a robot in this film, and then the next film was Blade Runner, which expanded on this premise. Damn replicants...
I was watching a special feature for this film, and one person (Gale Anne Hurd, I think it was), said that when Ash's head gets knocked off, they saw a woman in the audience faint.
@lymanb Has a lot to do with Ian Holm - his perfect diction and subtlety. That look on his face he sees Ripley realise he is synthetic is scary enough.
@whozafeard He just can't get enough credit for this performance. He is PERFECT in this role. When you watch it again, knowing what he is, he is foreshadowing in every single frame without making it obvious.
I watched aliens when i was 5 years old, and holy crap, this scene scared the shit out of me more than anything else. I absolutely love how the android is not mechanical. It is designed as it had fluid latex everywhere to make him look organic. It's fantastic, and i haven't seen this idea replicated in other movies. Every evil robot is a Terminator these days, it looks very cool, but it's very impractical.
If we ever see real androids out there, they will be designed as Ash.
@alienorbiter Oh, and a little bit of medical information, although a little spoilerish perhaps:
All those nerves and wires coming out of Ash's neck, with the small plastic bubbles... those are Foley probes. We use them when someone has a prostate problem. The probe is introduced through the urethra and then the small balloon is inflated with water to keep it in the bladder without moving.
Is not as painful as it sounds, and is a rather common procedure in the elderly...
@alienorbiter I spotted them too. We steal them during our "charity" visits to the elderly in the "male plumbing" ward and use them frequently during foreplay.
Has anyone ever explained what Ash was doing in the "Mother" room when Ripley shoved him against the wall? She goes into the room and sits down and she's alone. Then suddenly Ash is next to her. When did he come in?
@goback3spaces It was to a chair jumper. Ripley Scott wanted a sudden scare like Ash appearing from nowhere. He could've been already in the room. Knew Ripley was coming. Hid in hiding place like a priest hole.
@goback3spaces True. It's properly because no one gave it a thought like you. Now that you brought it up. It may let others think about it and try to explain it.
What's funny is that Ash was the opposite of Bishop, Ash was similiar to Skynet from the Terminator series (As its implied that he had a very nasty surprise waiting for his master's had he been successful in bringing the Xenomorph back to Earth LOL) and had little care for what happen to anyone else even admitting how he admired the creature, Bishop was similiar but showed that he was aware of himself (taking offense to being called a robot) and even agreed that xeno's had to die and was helpful
Anyone who thinks Ash malfunctioned is missing the whole point of the Alien franchise. The objective of the Weyland-Yutani corporation was to retrieve an alien specimen. An android is the only kind of 'human' resource that would prioritize a secondary objective over its own survival, so Ash was programmed to ensure the alien's successful infiltration the Nostromo and subsequent survival even at the price of the crew's lives. Burke, though not an android, filled these shoes in Aliens.
@DarthClam But this is predicated on the company having decoded the alien signal perhaps years ago? And that would require (or suggest) a previous ship either got lost or was on the outer rim of a shipping lane and vaguely picked up the transmission. But nothing would allow for the company to have decoded the v.v v. old signal which if valuable they wouuld have sent an armed science expedition. Everything suggests, the Co. knew of the transmission but had no idea what it meant. IMO
@cleander180 Maybe you're right, but on the other hand the company may have known well what the signal meant and sent an unarmed force as opposed to an armed one in order to prevent the risk of the specimen being killed by the humans. Also, Ash definitely appears to know what he's working with when he refers to the "perfect organism," as if he was given such information about the specimen prior to the mission.
@DarthClam The signal can only travel at the speed of light, which the Nostromo and other "Alien" craft must be able to far exceed for travel beyond home solar systems to be practicle. I'm interrestedin the scenario that allowed for the Co to receive the signal; not thru space alone - but carried on a previous vessel - then decoded back home. As the signal is suggested as being a warning - wouln't it be safer to send an ALL ANDROID team to get it rather than lose 20m ton in ore?
Why choke her when he should've just broke her neck? Just a film of course, but any smart baddie in real life would've done so in an instant. It's not smart to allow reinforcements (good or bad) to interfere when one is going for the kill.
@doomguy5000 Yeah you are right, I had forgotten about that. Still think the reason he tried to act on his "sexual" impulses in the first place was that he went crazy/malfunctioned for the reasons I mentioned. I do remember your super hot grampa though, he was a a piece of work
I luv how Siguorney gets man handled here lol, and I dont even mean that in a sexual way. Its just that Ridley doesnt hold bk, I mean bk then women in films mostly never got threw about and attacked like that. This scene really shows u that Ash is a robot, and u c wot this robot is capable of, even Yaphet koto, I mean he was a pretty big guy, and it takes alot 4 him 2 take ash dwn lol. Again so realistic! I used 2 think class Aliens as the best of the lot, but I admit, Alien is a true classic.
@RaikenXion alien should not have had a sequel. It was a masterpiece on its own. Aliens suk bc film is action/adventure - not scary and they give the alien a queen which in Alien we see is not necessary; it doesnt eat - the eggs use prey to form and given the derelict is probably 100k yr or more old (grown out of chair?) they can survive indefinitely. Hated all the sequels.
@cleander180 Yeh Im really starting 2 realize that now. I do think Aliens was the best sequel tho, I mean comparing that film 2 films today and it didnt even hav any CGI effects. But yes Alien is just a masterpiece but like all these special films that r 1 of a kind. Terminator I mean u cud class the first film as a sci-fi horror, Carpenter's Halloween another horror masterpiece, and I think wot makes these first films so damn scary is the mystery behind them. 2day every1 want things explained
@RaikenXion Exactly. It's the mystery that makes it unique. Alien stands out on it's own and I dont want a prequel to 'explain' everything. Personally I didnt like the introduction of a queen; in Alien we see that the alien uses the crew to develop eggs without a queen (in the directors cut when ripley finds dallas becoming an eg).
@cleander180 I think its cus we're coming to the end of Iconic things now. There r no new Ideas, no Innovative directors with a original Idea or vision. Those that do come along rework and even just plagiarize take JJ Abrams for example. Id say the only directors that came along and created sumthin quite new and original were the Wachowski Bros, and even they lost it with their own work. Every1 is so nostalgic and wants origins to these classics, cus theres nothing to look forward to now.
@RaikenXion I just don't believe they could get it right. And what of the technology? Are we to see colour flat screens on the spacecraft cf the simple but effectively used ones in Alien? I also dont think you could get such a great cast - they were all nobodies - instead perhaps we'll have Tom Cruise. But who knows, perhaps it would be as good?
@cleander180 Gud point, If the ships called Prometheus, I like to think its going to hav a cross of looking a fair bit in the style of the tech from the Nostromo as well as maybe a touch of the modern to it, in a sense. I hav gud feeling about this movie becus the original director is returning to it, and I wud very much like to trust that Ridley Scott will also hav been thinking alot about these little issues, as to how exactly the technology in this film is going to look compared to Alien.
@cleander180 As for the cast, Im actually quite satisfied with the actors hes got onboard. The only ones I think he cud've done with out were Guy Pearce and the lovely Charlize Theron, who r quite established in Hollywood. Other than that I think the rest of the cast r pretty much unknowns. We just need to hav some faith in Ridley Scott, hes a great director I honestly dont think hes ever made a bad film, and hes the sort of director that wont just take anything thats given to him.
Yeah, definitely. I think what also makes this scene so great is the fact that while most androids in movies have plain cold metal skeletons, Ash is very organic looking. His death is much more scary and disturbing because you see all these wiggling wires and nerves flailing about and white blood spraying everywhere.
@Doublex776 That was very imaginative, just like the design of the alien itself, the derelict, the face-hugger, the chest-bursting scene etc. I still remember the impression this movie made on me as a young teenager. "There is a mouth inside its mouth!"
I love the way the actor played Ash in a very human manner..he was snappy, irritable and rude..the complete opposite of what you would expect from an android and it worked great..I love the realism of this movie even tho they probably wouldnt be using Commodore 64 computer interfaces in 2047
@motherbrain86 It's probably meant to look that way. Alien has a lot of sexual undertones and scenes of rape. Think of the Alien itself. It's a giant penis that penetrates people and impregnates them!
I just about pissed myself when Ash's head got knocked off the first time I saw it. Certainly explains why he seems so indifferent while everyone else freaks out earlier in the movie.
Also, jeebus, I never realized just how short the actor was until this movie. He's so bitty. :3
@90geekgirl06 Apparently there were several incidents of theater ushers passing out during this scene and the chest-bursting one while it was in theaters.
That dude didn't malfunction in the lease bit. He had it in for the crew. His mission was to bring back the alien and he was going to sacrifice the crew. Ripley got in his way and Ash was going to do away with her.
@dontleademsomuch i thought "american gangster" was alright. and supposedly "gladiator" was really good. but i know what u mean, everything hes done has disappointed me besides this and blade runner. and blade runner even had more potential, he did a good job but it coulda been better
I think he malfunctioned because he's programmed by humans to aid humans, and then was reprogrammed by wayland-utani to regard the Nostromo crew as "expendable" in relation to his mission. This conflict was probably what caused the malfunction as he tried to work out the contradictory priorities from his original functioning priorities.
Y'know, these things are always happening with robots and human females. A sinilar thing happened in the film 'Adam', but of course that was a much more sensitive spot.
I love the little subtle clues that there's something different about Ash: The little trickle of white fluid dripping down his forehead, his movements suddenly becoming a bit more robotic, the little toy-like squeak he makes when first hit with the fire extinguisher, etc. Then the payoff - off with his head!
i just gotta say, the acting in this movie blows me away every time. It's just so incredible. I remember the first time I saw this movie, the whole rest of the night I kept having vivid dreams that were re-runs of the different scenes... it was terrifying and absolutely amazing :)
@carig121 when Ripley is inside mothers control room, she pushes Ash on her way out and he hits the wall. it must have broken some of his inner werkings. in the next scene you see him in, you see some of his lubricant trickling down his forehead. i think this implies he has been broken.
he is not programmed to go nuts. he is programmed to protect the specimen. otherwise why not program him to kill them all after the specimen had been collected.
@carig121 I think, it's the mental mismatch between his program as a medical officer and the task to protect the alien at all costs (or something along the lines).
@flippert0 I believe the stress of the situation caused him to malfunction. He knew Ripley was on to The Companys plan and he had to stop her, but he wasn't really designed to attack people as a science officer. Hence the weird nonsensical magazine-assault.
@punishalltrolls ash either malfuntioned or his preprogramed abligation started. but ash had no intention of leting anyone survive. or help them. he was to bring back the alien to the authorities alive for study/research. wailand.
when i first time saw this scene i was in kidergarden... like 15 years ago.. i was about 4, still remember it as if it was yesterday... and it scared the shit out of me, cuz i thought robots like that actually existed lol
@MCshlthead ORSM!!!!! Get your mate to hit you over the head with a French loaf first though in order to activate the malfunctioning process. F*ck you'd get a few looks from the other punters..LOOK THE F*CK OUT PEOPLE, ZOMBIE SPACE ANDROID COMING THROUGH!!!!!

This conflict was probably what caused the malfunction as he tried to work out the contradictory priorities from his original functioning priorities.

Y'know, these things are always happening with robots and human females. A sinilar thing happened in the film 'Adam', but of course that was a much more sensitive spot.

Parker. It's a robot! Ash is a goddamned robot! ..

I love the little subtle clues that there's something different about Ash: The little trickle of white fluid dripping down his forehead, his movements suddenly becoming a bit more robotic, the little toy-like squeak he makes when first hit with the fire extinguisher, etc. Then the payoff - off with his head!

I remember seeing this part when I was little, and it scared me SHITLESS.

I found 1:10 and on to be the most disturbing part of the movie besides the chestburster scene.

I don't think they needed that music cue when his head comes off. Keeping this scene music free would have been the best choice I think. Still great.

i just gotta say, the acting in this movie blows me away every time. It's just so incredible. I remember the first time I saw this movie, the whole rest of the night I kept having vivid dreams that were re-runs of the different scenes... it was terrifying and absolutely amazing :)

never knew why he just started malfunctioning ? no apparent reason, ripley didn't hit him so hard in the previous scene to cause such damage.

@carig121
Apparently he was programmed to go nuts if the crew tried to interfere with company's plan.

@lettmons Crew Expendable.

@lettmons Machines have been known to malfunction on their own too, so its not exactly a plot hole.
DejectedPanda 8 months ago
@lettmons no. beter he not go nuts and foil ripley in the end. by breaking down he gave the secret away
cleander180 6 months ago
@carig121 when Ripley is inside mothers control room, she pushes Ash on her way out and he hits the wall. it must have broken some of his inner werkings. in the next scene you see him in, you see some of his lubricant trickling down his forehead. i think this implies he has been broken.
he is not programmed to go nuts. he is programmed to protect the specimen. otherwise why not program him to kill them all after the specimen had been collected.
TRaddcliff 1 year ago
@carig121 I think, it's the mental mismatch between his program as a medical officer and the task to protect the alien at all costs (or something along the lines).
flippert0 9 months ago
@flippert0 I believe the stress of the situation caused him to malfunction. He knew Ripley was on to The Companys plan and he had to stop her, but he wasn't really designed to attack people as a science officer. Hence the weird nonsensical magazine-assault.

punishalltrolls 1 year ago
@punishalltrolls ash either malfuntioned or his preprogramed abligation started. but ash had no intention of leting anyone survive. or help them. he was to bring back the alien to the authorities alive for study/research. wailand.
