Along with Tom Rush and others, Chris was one of the great troubadours to have emerged from the New England coffee house circuit in the late 60's - early 70's. His rendition of the Grateful Dead classic, "Friend of the Devil" is the best ever.
No matter how many times I watch this performance, I just can't get over how perfect his guitar playing is. It appears he doesn't even have to think about it.
In the first half of the song it looks like he gives a quick wave to someone and he doesn't miss a beat. Maybe it's due to 35 years of playing!
goingt to see chris at the Strand, Rockland, Maine tonight...i know how good he'll be and hope to get some video to post....love that BLUE GUITAR...and he's a great guy.
This is transcendent. Chris Smither is a helluva nice guy to boot. We caught him at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard (Seattle) and it was by far the finest evening I've had in years!
I've met and hung out with Chris on a few occasions-- one great night over dinner at a gig and later smoking handrolled Bali Shags, drinking tea and playing darts until the wee hours-- what a perfect gentleman and an eloquently understated genius musician. Chris is a master of his craft deep and true-- warm and honest and with a heart as wide and open as the world. Sing it, Brother!
Been watchin this guy for over 15 years and I still can't believe how few no about him. Best songwriter and one of the best guitarists out there. Love his style. Do NOT miss him if he comes around.
very very under-rated, he should sell out the tweeter center in boston, but instead plays at the lizard lounge which holds about 300 people, but it makes it all that much better!!! keep rockin chris
First time I ever played in front of a crowd was as a support act for Chris. He was kind and supportive, and a great player. That was at RAF Locking in about 1982.
Saw Chris Smither last night in Leicester .... what a performer ... he shows that if you add experience to talent you get real genius. His performance looked effortless ... it was a classic.
a chris smither concert has the ability to turn your awareness of music, songwriting and lyrics inside out... i remember the encore the last time i saw him i felt like he peeled my skull back and poured music inside it, this guy is a genius.
Please post it..Anything is better than nothing and people can be "masked out" if they actually just pass the camera lens..I think camera wobble can be addressed in an editing program also.. ....Interesting there is a guy on stage with a video camera ..I do not think Chris's skill as a guitar player is recognised..I transcribed High Heel Sneakers and its simply great to play but a certain skill is required and a Taylor Guitar?? In my case an 815C..
I play guitar and tab Chris's tunes that are not in his books so any vids that can provide fingerboard postioning is invaluable even if poor quality EG The Prime Ticket Concert.
In fact I was going to post that, the audio is good, but there are several places where the camera wandered, or people walked in front of it. If you would like to see it I will post it. It was an excellent performance!
Emmylou Harris' recording of Smither's "Slow Surprise" for "The Horse Whisperer" soundtrack led me here; sorry for being so late to the table.

Guitar's his blue signature model and he doesn't always dress in black by any means. But by all means, get all his CDs because the guy's awesome.

Chris Smither lays back in his easy chair and, barely trying, owns. What are the rest of us supposed to do? What a great song. What a great artist.

awesome song!...one question, though: is he wearing tap shoes, with that low mic focused on his feet to give a percussive effect?
BonDonnell 4 years ago
I've seen him lots of times live, and yes, he uses his feet as percussion. Just ordinary shoes on a wooden board. The guy's a genius!
