  • Such a wonderful singer... a pity the world was not given the chance to experience during his prime... I feel very much the same about Vishnevskaya.

  • Beautiful baritone. Henry Fogel just did a retrospective on Lisitsian this evening on WFMT network. Heard some great singing there, also!

  • Mazurock is no piker either.

  • superior to hvorovstovsky's luke warm faked impassioned renditions.

  • Последнее время последние слова арии поют: "О милая, доверьтесь мне".

  • @Natalotos Да, это и я заметила.

  • Ever since first heard Hvorostovsky sing this at Cardiff Singer of the world, I've been a fan of his, although I think he sings less well these days. But Pavel Lisitsian leaves H at the starting post. Listen to the way he ascends to a perfect top G, and THEN goes to the whole of the next phrase without a breath!! Phenomenal.

  • What a great rendition! Absolutely beautiful!

  • wonderful performance, Lisitsian was one of the biggest baryton not only in russian repertory

  • Amen! Every syllable provides proof positive for his supremacy! Thanks for sharing

  • On top of everything else, his diction is eerily clear. I don't speak Russian at all, but when I hear him, I imagine that I can understand every word, so perfectly does he enunciate every syllable. Lemeshev also has this gift, which is the hallmark of the greatest.

  • 2:22 - 2:37

    Incomparable.

  • Lisitian singing comes through the soul.

  • On just this one aria this is the finest voice I have ever heard anywhere, it is just absolute perfection in every way. I actually picked this up for £1 in my local Poundland about 5 years ago on a CD of all Russian Opera, other singers include Ivan Koslovsky, Boris Christoff, and many more, but this particular track is my favourite by a great distance. There is something about Russian culture that has always stood out from the rest and this is just one example. Current favourite is Ms Netrebko

  • Very heavy weight Russian sound; very lyrical; I would prefer to Hvor in this aria.

  • Que voz la de este hombre, me encanta su color!

  • Изумительный голос и человек!!!

  • The long phrase leading to the high note and down from it was nothing short of phenomenal! This whole performance is truly Golden Age.

  • @AulicExclusiva I completely agree. Lisitsian's performance here, and many of his other recordings, are worthy of the great Italian baritones of yore such as Battistini, Ancona, and Stracciari. At the risk of antagonizing the "bel canto police" (I think you know whom I mean), Lisitsian--as well as Schlusnus, Janssen, and Merrill--are all relatively modern bel canto baritones. Thanks for sending my way, and thanks to GOS for posting.

  • @meltzerboy As Galli-Curci said, bel canto is not and cannot be a static thing, even though it has some steady principles. I would add Joseph Schwarz to your list. He is a great favourite of mine.

  • @AulicExclusiva A brilliant statement from a singer who sounds familiar to me. Definitely Joseph Schwarz is part of the bel-canto group. I listened to the aria you sent and liked it very, German language and all. Thanks!

  • @meltzerboy That should read, "liked it very much."

  • Все врет главное!))))))) Вот как мужчины заливают))) Обещания!)))

  • to think we have been degraded from lisitsian to hvorostovsky

  • Fantastic. Delicate, expressive, moving. The best. Thanks for posting.

  • sublimely beautiful

  • Sublime !Dal vivo aveva una bella voce di barotono Verdiano !Che dolcezza nella sua voce .....e si ,la vecchia scuola dove LA emozione e LA iterpretazione giusta erano importanti ! Sublime Lisitsian Grazie .

  • Pavel was a teacher of Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

This baritone was extraordinary. I'm a fan of Dima .

    I adore him.

  • I too adore Hvorostovsky and Lisitsian!

  • One of the greatest baritones Russia's produced. Spectacular voice and elegant phrasing. Listen to his An die Musik. It's definitive.

  • @vpo2g2

Not just Russia, Lisitsian ethnically is Armenian...

  • Bravo! Bravo! Archibravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a singer, I can't believe my ears.

  • Yes. That's it.

  • This is the most beautiful version of this aria I've ever heard. What a gorgeous voice.

  • Off the Charts....HUGE!

  • Is this from the complete recording conducted by Melik-Pashaiev, or a later recording? In any event, it is magnificent. Lisa was a fool not to fall for Yeletsky after hearing this!

  • @billyguns2 Alexander Shamil'evich Melik-Pashayev is also ethnically Armenian conductor.

  • the best baryton ever!

  • Can somebody tell me where I can find the whole libretto og this opera?

  • The glory of this truly glorious voice is that wholly distinctive vibrato. There are times when I think he really is my favourite singer. And especially in this repertory.

  • Wow! And besides all, so clearly prounced Russian! Bravissimo Pavel! You sent tingles down my spine!

  • How can you compare Hvorostovsky to this beauty??

  • There isn't a pint of comparation.this is the TRUE Tscahikowskian spirit...the TRUE psychological speech of Yeletzky...the TRUE expression...the TRUE beauty!!!!

  • @Fallout06

My god, you are sooooo right! I mean Hvorostovsky has a nice voice, but HERE it´s all coming directly from the heart. I believe Lisitsian every word he is singing. Hvorostovsky on the contrary is much too vain to sing so honestly and purely....

  • @Fallout06 ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • @Fallout06 You can't : )

  • @Ettoredipugnar I agre! Dh is brilliant as well, I'd say Pl=L was his role model :-))

  • @Fallout06 Seeing as" this beauty" (Lisitian) may well have been Hvorostovski's role model - very well indeed! :-)

  • thank you for posting this. it's marvellous.

only the typo in the tag Lisitsian made it hard to find this as it doesn't come up in search

  • Listening to this makes me cry every time...

Thank you for posting this gem!

  • What a rich quality to his voice. His singing has so many plusses - liquid legato, beautiful breath control. And I melt from that soulful vibrato.

  • INSUPERABLE YELETZKY!!!!!!!!!

    ankhsnammon

  • Wow, this is great. I have loved the Hvorostovsky version, but this just takes the cake. THANKS

  • My dear sir or madame:they are different eras...M. Litsitsian belongs to the Era of authentic Beauty...to the ra when you were listenign to a singer whom REALLY WAS all that he/she was singing...

But those times of beauty and perfection are over...unfortunately...So,today,we have one like DH...no more.

    Ankhsnammon

  • Thanks for the lesson. A simple I agree or I disagree would've been fine. I just enjoy good singing...no more.

  • My dear sir..or madam..i'm a simple dilettante...and I agree with you...I like and enjoy wood singing...and,in this concept,I can put litsitsian,chernov..and khvorostovsky,too...

    Respectfully,

    Ankhsnammon

  • Tremendous singing, excellent post -- thank you. May I recommend Lisitian's fine rendition of "si puo" (available on YouTube)?

  • Of course! that performance is more than perfect!
