  • I wasn't a big Steely Dan fan, a few songs i liked but this one is my favorite, just love this song somethin about it

  • K19 was the first nuclear Russian submarine and plagued with design flaws. It was designed to compete against the first class of American subs, the Skate class. There were a few instances which killed some of the crew and left its survivors in real peril. In one instance, a U.S. ship heard its distress signal, but the K19 refused its help in an effort to retain secrecy.

Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but also consider Fagen's fear/fascination with the Cold War revealed in the Nightfly!

  • @shaunthonys P.S. One of K19's captains was.........(drumroll) Victor Kulibaba!!!

  • I can't remember 19 :P

  • Steely Dan is such a totally awesome band with a sound like no other band! This song takes me back to my preteen days sitting by the river on hot summer days playing this song and just taking in the beauty of life. The kind of beauty that you feel at that age before you become polluted with the crap that the world throws at you as you become an adult. Such great memories with this song. The best days of my life then. I love to listen to this song just so can I escape back to that time. :-)

  • Classic....

  • I heard this song was about Lady Di and Prince Charles. It came out during the time they were dating.

  • SD's current touring band killed this tune in Snowmass, CO last Labor Day. Masterful rearrangement, vocals, everything. Beyond belief. Hilarious yak from Walter Becker during the vamp buildup to, "The Cuervo Gold . . .," which all sang along to, and happened to sponsor the concert.

  • how do you know a 19-year old girl isn't fucking your 49-year old uncle? but then, who gives a fuck if he's got a nephew or niece who's a jerk and publishes personal information about him on the internet

  • you uhhh .. you listen to the lyrics at all before dedicating this to your daughter? you know it's about an impotent coked up 30+ year old trying to get into a 19 year old's pants, right?

  • @snakeanthony11 lol i was thinking the same thing

  • this song is an all time classic... I will always love this song....im a 70s baby

  • "....skate a little lower now...." Great song.

  • @guitarzan73 I would have never know they said that lol Good Lookin Out

  • @guitarzan73 How many years have I wondered what the heck they said after "The Cuervo Gold" and just made up sounds to match? Thank you, thank you, thank you, for giving me this gift. Of course, I have the sounds so embedded in my head, I still won't remember it's "Colombian" rather than, "the fine cold wambeeyan" . . . :)

  • What's a Coke Rumeon?

  • Now this is a jam, Thanks for the post

  • To those jerks who are downing this person for dedicating this to a daughter...you are not catching why...Hey nineteen, no we can't talk at all...Hey nineteen, that's Aretha Franklin...it's not just about drugs, and sex.... he can't relate, most 19 yr. olds can't relate...just saying. And, it's a badass song.

  • @sonyamusic9 nope. its about picking up and sleeping with a 19 yr old honey

  • one of the best of the 80's

  • this song is about drinking, doing coke and fucking.... and you dedicated it to your daughter?

  • still silk against the soul...

  • This is as good as it gets! Great Memories.

  • That one dislike just proves that there will always be one idiot in the group!!

  • that 1 dislike he has no taste in music stuped biber fan needs to be hunted down and excuted in a horribel way steely dan rules fu and biber haters

  • @iheartarslanov--i feel you, this was my dad's song, it was our song.

  • I absolutely HATE this song. That being said, I just listened to it as I always will on this date. My mother was in hospice quite literally on her deathbed only semi lucid not knowing where she was and nutty from morphine but she wound up wanting me to play this song. that was August 15, 2009.

  • ps. this video sucks...

  • you know minus the drugs, this really is our song.

    i miss you.

-way back when, you know, like in '07....

-moved up/down to... where the f am i?

    i do truely miss you.

its been a while. i thought i saw you, maybe, maybe not. but im sure i did.

i suck for not saying something.

  • Great audio and video.I like the way you got Larry carlton in there.

  • nice job on the video. melgorm would be pleased. boy do i miss that guy!!!

  • This song reminds me of cruising down the streets of Seattle as a kid, in my dad's pinto on a warm summer day... I would look up through the sunroof at the tops of the skyscrapers... We would make our way to a little sandwich shop over in the U-district and get some grinders... End up at Gasworks Park and eat our lunch watching all the boats go by... Lots of great memories...

  • Masterpiece......Like most of their songs

  • My dad loved this song. RIP, i'm 14 and this song reminds me of the goodtimes we would have in the car driving to walmart....ha..<3

  • @sarasue2u Awesome post! Keep the memory of your dad alive. My daughters always remind me of the songs I'd play when driving around with them. Gives me warm fuzzies and I know they'll remember me when I'm long gone. Peace.

  • @sarasue2u fuck walmart and fuck your dad no one cares that your 14

  • @MrSkate4weed Aren't you the little bitch? lol.

The point of my comment is to show how joy this song brings me, and how the spirit of Steely Dan still lives.

Think before you post something hurtful.

  • @sarasue2u you're fucking retarded, go help the revolution kid

  • @MrSkate4weed Hmmm, you make no sense.

Bye, and stop being a pussy and hiding behind your PC. lol.

  • @sarasue2u First condolences about your Dad! I am 49. First time I heard this song I was 15. And this was, and still is, one of my favorite songs. Your Dad had good taste in music! With love! Mike

  • @sarasue2u both my folks forced their old people music on me too ( like the DAN) when i was a kid. now i love old music THANKS TO MY MOM AND DAD.

  • I love these guys, they got a quality mix of funk and jazz that just goes down smooooth.

  • Great upload NymphoTeen!

  • Donald and Walter hit #10 in Billboard, 2-14-81. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • When I hear this song, I imagine myself in a smokey bowling alley sipping cuervo gold as bowling pins echoe in the background. I see countless strangers, who posess questionable fashion taste, wearing flared collars and bellbottomed jeans. The green shag carpeting in the lounge sways as vents pour stale air about the place. Wood paneling reflects the light from the !970s vintage jukebox. A waitress with Farrah Fawcett hair brings me more medicine. Thank you Steely Dan

  • @stuvo1977 great beginning. what happens next? where does the story go? i'm hooked.

  • Tube socks + roller skates = this song

  • cool video!

  • 19 is old enough to do whatever the heck you want. Plus it's an amazing song. Kind of a funky jam.

Also, hats off to MemphTenn for the video. His daughter is now about 21 so...well, there's that. The girl in the video at the point where Fagan says "nice" is absolutely the best face for the song and for that moment. Perfect.

  • @leoladenson I certainly don't think so. My (single & hot) mother and her girlfriends all LOVED Steely Dan and so did we (their 4 teen daughters.) It was a staple. Good sexy, rock and roll, intellectual, classy, and highly artistic backdrop for any gathering. I always thought this song was kinda mine because I was born in '67. course i knew who "'retha franklin" was. Nah, not just for guys.

  • This song is about a woman with 19 vaginas that eat crickets.

  • @Fredonia2k jesus christ, that comment made me yell with laughter.

  • @mrgarcia500 Steely dan was recognized as 1 of the top 100 artists ,in any genre, of all time on VH1. it was pretty cool to see that! Heavy Metal thick skulls are always dissing these guys as some sort of lounge act. I have seen them live, and though there are no pyrotechnics or vomiting or biting the heads off of small mammals, they rock!! You are right about them being underappreciated but that seems to be changing!

  • ...you... you do realize this song's about an older guy trying to convince a 19-year-old girl to have sex with him, right? You know this, right?

  • @popoi50 Yeah :-D that's cooool uhhh? So what? Everyone wants to feel ALIVE

  • @popoi50

I don't think its that simple. I think its actually part self-analysis...Fagan was 32 in 1980 when the song was made...in 1967 ("I was a daddy Gamma Phi") he was ...19. He's realizing that maybe he's disconnected from the person he was at 19, but maybe a little tequila and cocaine (common during the time) could make the self-loathing he has tolerable. It's not just...attempted sex with a college age kid. Hence the 'we can't dance together, no we can't talk at all' lyrics.

  • This artist and band where sorely under appriciated....But I always will.....:)...And It's strang that not one dumb ass flawed there clean record with a negative vote!...

  • This artist and band where sorely under appriciated....But I always will.....:)...

  • @say10hailmarys Been there, done that....

  • @say10hailmarys I have news for you. Wilkipedia is not always correct. In fact it is quite often incorrect. I knew the answer when I posted the question just to see if anyone knew the answer. Vibrator

  • Anyone know what a "steely dan is?"

  • YACHT ROCK!

  • If none of you can hear at the end he say's "THE FINE COLUMBIAN" HHMMM I wonder what he meant? He was talking about doing COCAINE and drinking and having sex with this 19 year old girl... cause that was the only thing they had in common....

  • Getting ready to suck some Cock, she turns ninetten thats what she will be doing I bet, lol.

  • What a fabulous song to groove to.

  • i went to his last consert im 21 too love him and pink floyd

  • I've been looking for this song everywhere! Thanks for posting this!

  • Way back when i was 3-5 years old, in the car my mom never put on those tapes with annoying children's music. She put on Steely Dan! Thank God

  • She 19, so she's legal I'm assuming that is why he does not want to socialize with her.

  • @Dablkwid0w2008 No he's at a party and he's trying to get with her but she's thinking he's a creep

  • @jdangerously80 Jesus is Real peace

  • Great song, one of those with the kind of beat and depth of lyric that takes a hold of your imagination and spins you into joyous circles lasting forever that never get you dizzy.

  • What!! are you kidding me?>? She don't remember the Queen of Soul?<?.....and the fine Columbian......Ahead of it;s time~!......

  • @jdangerously80 true story. but hey, these days, who has time to listen to words... if it doesn't have a catchy tagline or an easily remembered slogan, who gives a crap

  • Great song! I like Steely Dan. Used to have the Aja album many years ago! Thanks for the post!

  • if you posted this for your daughter's nineteenth birthday, it makes me think that you've never listened to the words of this song.

  • @cyberratt u know what, alot of people dont truly listen to whats being sung, they pay more attention to the beats and melodies and that's not good, in my opinion

  • @jdangerously80 YOU ARE SAYING THAT LYRICS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN COMPOSITION, TECHNICAL ABILITY AND, TALENT?????? LYRICS SHOULD BE COMPLIMENTARY AND SHOULD NOT BE THE SPEARHEAD OF A SONG.

  • @KINGARTHUR3341 no im not sayn that,,,im saying that the beats and melodies are very important and quite possibly so influentcial these days,,, that alot of people dont even pay attention to the lyrics...

  • @jdangerously80 I have to say my brain is usually skipping past the lyrics and going straight to the beat and the complexities of the instrumentation. I've just always been drawn that way. I was not content with all the groups that were just guitars & drums, although there are standouts even there. Hope you'll come check out my channel of 700 playlists that include lists for 400 artists & every year since 1900. My last vid of this went down so I'm here for a replacement for my 1980 list. chuck

  • @cyberratt ....I wouldn't want my grown, married, has a child, Son to even think about doing some of the stuff I did! But I understand the poster's sentiments.....

  • @cyberratt and yikes if they actually did listen to the words...

  • @cyberratt she is of age..We all love loose chics..

  • @cyberratt Amen to that.

  • @cyberratt Everyone's a critic.

  • @cyberratt gotta agree with you man. im sure he took a harder look at the lyrics after that post. that is of course unless he's from the south. :)

  • @cyberratt Touche.

  • i truly love the song, thank u for the vid,as someone who is 30,i definitely wast around in those days, but i can definitely say that the times since, have become much darker, not only in music which i love so much, but in many other areas as well, unfortunately i fear that this darkness ,will be percieved by many to be light,if one allows it,the choice is up to us as individuals,to not be decieved

  • niiccee!!

  • Good memories of listening to this on tape and later CD as we drove down south for the yearly vacation in our family's big old, outdated van. Jeez, the windows had curtains, remember when vans had curtains? And ladders on the back? Remember when there were vans at all? I never see one anymore...hmm, anyway, great tune. Always made the miles fly by.

  • the querrrrvo gold
