K19 was the first nuclear Russian submarine and plagued with design flaws. It was designed to compete against the first class of American subs, the Skate class. There were a few instances which killed some of the crew and left its survivors in real peril. In one instance, a U.S. ship heard its distress signal, but the K19 refused its help in an effort to retain secrecy.
Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but also consider Fagen's fear/fascination with the Cold War revealed in the Nightfly!
Steely Dan is such a totally awesome band with a sound like no other band! This song takes me back to my preteen days sitting by the river on hot summer days playing this song and just taking in the beauty of life. The kind of beauty that you feel at that age before you become polluted with the crap that the world throws at you as you become an adult. Such great memories with this song. The best days of my life then. I love to listen to this song just so can I escape back to that time. :-)
You insensitive asshole. Why would you say something like that to a 14yo. It's people like you that makes this world so fucked up. SHAME ON YOU! You got somthing to say then talk to me I'll be happy to take you on...Grandma of this 14yo..
All of this "49 year old man (preying on) 19 year old girls" chatter is based upon misplaced chronology. In 1978, the authors would've been about 30. I am the same age and it was not uncommon for 19 year old girls to come prowling through bars. Try to strike up a meaningful conversation with a 19 year old. The Cuervo Gold and "fine colombian" would have been a nice ironic twist, just to see them stagger off in search of better, richer Sugar Daddies.

SD's current touring band killed this tune in Snowmass, CO last Labor Day. Masterful rearrangement, vocals, everything. Beyond belief. Hilarious yak from Walter Becker during the vamp buildup to, "The Cuervo Gold . . .," which all sang along to, and happened to sponsor the concert.
how do you know a 19-year old girl isn't fucking your 49-year old uncle? but then, who gives a fuck if he's got a nephew or niece who's a jerk and publishes personal information about him on the internet
you uhhh .. you listen to the lyrics at all before dedicating this to your daughter? you know it's about an impotent coked up 30+ year old trying to get into a 19 year old's pants, right?
haha -- it's so funny the music you associate with your parents -- my dad is steely dan, rem, pearl jam, and weezer. my mom is chicago, seal, sting, and the doobie brothers. great song!
@guitarzan73 How many years have I wondered what the heck they said after "The Cuervo Gold" and just made up sounds to match? Thank you, thank you, thank you, for giving me this gift. Of course, I have the sounds so embedded in my head, I still won't remember it's "Colombian" rather than, "the fine cold wambeeyan" . . . :)
To those jerks who are downing this person for dedicating this to a daughter...you are not catching why...Hey nineteen, no we can't talk at all...Hey nineteen, that's Aretha Franklin...it's not just about drugs, and sex.... he can't relate, most 19 yr. olds can't relate...just saying. And, it's a badass song.
I absolutely HATE this song. That being said, I just listened to it as I always will on this date. My mother was in hospice quite literally on her deathbed only semi lucid not knowing where she was and nutty from morphine but she wound up wanting me to play this song. that was August 15, 2009.
This song reminds me of cruising down the streets of Seattle as a kid, in my dad's pinto on a warm summer day... I would look up through the sunroof at the tops of the skyscrapers... We would make our way to a little sandwich shop over in the U-district and get some grinders... End up at Gasworks Park and eat our lunch watching all the boats go by... Lots of great memories...
@sarasue2u Awesome post! Keep the memory of your dad alive. My daughters always remind me of the songs I'd play when driving around with them. Gives me warm fuzzies and I know they'll remember me when I'm long gone. Peace.
@sarasue2u First condolences about your Dad! I am 49. First time I heard this song I was 15. And this was, and still is, one of my favorite songs. Your Dad had good taste in music! With love! Mike
When I hear this song, I imagine myself in a smokey bowling alley sipping cuervo gold as bowling pins echoe in the background. I see countless strangers, who posess questionable fashion taste, wearing flared collars and bellbottomed jeans. The green shag carpeting in the lounge sways as vents pour stale air about the place. Wood paneling reflects the light from the !970s vintage jukebox. A waitress with Farrah Fawcett hair brings me more medicine. Thank you Steely Dan
19 is old enough to do whatever the heck you want. Plus it's an amazing song. Kind of a funky jam.
Also, hats off to MemphTenn for the video. His daughter is now about 21 so...well, there's that. The girl in the video at the point where Fagan says "nice" is absolutely the best face for the song and for that moment. Perfect.
@leoladenson I certainly don't think so. My (single & hot) mother and her girlfriends all LOVED Steely Dan and so did we (their 4 teen daughters.) It was a staple. Good sexy, rock and roll, intellectual, classy, and highly artistic backdrop for any gathering. I always thought this song was kinda mine because I was born in '67. course i knew who "'retha franklin" was. Nah, not just for guys.
@mrgarcia500 Steely dan was recognized as 1 of the top 100 artists ,in any genre, of all time on VH1. it was pretty cool to see that! Heavy Metal thick skulls are always dissing these guys as some sort of lounge act. I have seen them live, and though there are no pyrotechnics or vomiting or biting the heads off of small mammals, they rock!! You are right about them being underappreciated but that seems to be changing!
I don't think its that simple. I think its actually part self-analysis...Fagan was 32 in 1980 when the song was made...in 1967 ("I was a daddy Gamma Phi") he was ...19. He's realizing that maybe he's disconnected from the person he was at 19, but maybe a little tequila and cocaine (common during the time) could make the self-loathing he has tolerable. It's not just...attempted sex with a college age kid. Hence the 'we can't dance together, no we can't talk at all' lyrics.
This artist and band where sorely under appriciated....But I always will.....:)...And It's strang that not one dumb ass flawed there clean record with a negative vote!...
To my beloved daughter. May you get fucked by a 50 year old man you can't talk to at all while drunk on Mexican tequila and high on cocaine. happy birthday!

United Through Positive Actions,,,,its doesnt matter if u believe in JESUS,ALLAH,or even a girraff for that matter,,,,come as u are,,,,check us out,,,,,U.T.P.A. shout out,,,,vid,,for a lil about us,,,,,peace
Great song, one of those with the kind of beat and depth of lyric that takes a hold of your imagination and spins you into joyous circles lasting forever that never get you dizzy.
@jdangerously80 true story. but hey, these days, who has time to listen to words... if it doesn't have a catchy tagline or an easily remembered slogan, who gives a crap
@cyberratt u know what, alot of people dont truly listen to whats being sung, they pay more attention to the beats and melodies and that's not good, in my opinion
@jdangerously80 YOU ARE SAYING THAT LYRICS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN COMPOSITION, TECHNICAL ABILITY AND, TALENT?????? LYRICS SHOULD BE COMPLIMENTARY AND SHOULD NOT BE THE SPEARHEAD OF A SONG.
@KINGARTHUR3341 no im not sayn that,,,im saying that the beats and melodies are very important and quite possibly so influentcial these days,,, that alot of people dont even pay attention to the lyrics...
@jdangerously80 I have to say my brain is usually skipping past the lyrics and going straight to the beat and the complexities of the instrumentation. I've just always been drawn that way. I was not content with all the groups that were just guitars & drums, although there are standouts even there. Hope you'll come check out my channel of 700 playlists that include lists for 400 artists & every year since 1900. My last vid of this went down so I'm here for a replacement for my 1980 list. chuck
@cyberratt ....I wouldn't want my grown, married, has a child, Son to even think about doing some of the stuff I did! But I understand the poster's sentiments.....
i truly love the song, thank u for the vid,as someone who is 30,i definitely wast around in those days, but i can definitely say that the times since, have become much darker, not only in music which i love so much, but in many other areas as well, unfortunately i fear that this darkness ,will be percieved by many to be light,if one allows it,the choice is up to us as individuals,to not be decieved
When I was 8, my aunt moved in with us...Every Friday, we would eat pizza, drink Pabst Blue Ribbon, & listen to the "Gaucho" album...To this day, I call it "The Beer & Pizza" album...Lol...Great music!...
Good memories of listening to this on tape and later CD as we drove down south for the yearly vacation in our family's big old, outdated van. Jeez, the windows had curtains, remember when vans had curtains? And ladders on the back? Remember when there were vans at all? I never see one anymore...hmm, anyway, great tune. Always made the miles fly by.
@alejaperu No (scope and scale of their compositions and in no small sense their general popular appeal etc ) but I know what you mean and they are fantastic all the same
I wasn't a big Steely Dan fan, a few songs i liked but this one is my favorite, just love this song somethin about it

A beautiful track and Steely Dan's music material is some of the best.

Great song! I like Steely Dan. Used to have the Aja album many years ago! Thanks for the post!

if you posted this for your daughter's nineteenth birthday, it makes me think that you've never listened to the words of this song.
cyberratt 1 year ago 196
@cyberratt u know what, alot of people dont truly listen to whats being sung, they pay more attention to the beats and melodies and that's not good, in my opinion
jdangerously80 1 year ago
@jdangerously80 YOU ARE SAYING THAT LYRICS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN COMPOSITION, TECHNICAL ABILITY AND, TALENT?????? LYRICS SHOULD BE COMPLIMENTARY AND SHOULD NOT BE THE SPEARHEAD OF A SONG.
KINGARTHUR3341 11 months ago
@KINGARTHUR3341 no im not sayn that,,,im saying that the beats and melodies are very important and quite possibly so influentcial these days,,, that alot of people dont even pay attention to the lyrics...
jdangerously80 11 months ago
@jdangerously80 I have to say my brain is usually skipping past the lyrics and going straight to the beat and the complexities of the instrumentation. I've just always been drawn that way. I was not content with all the groups that were just guitars & drums, although there are standouts even there. Hope you'll come check out my channel of 700 playlists that include lists for 400 artists & every year since 1900. My last vid of this went down so I'm here for a replacement for my 1980 list. chuck

i truly love the song, thank u for the vid,as someone who is 30,i definitely wast around in those days, but i can definitely say that the times since, have become much darker, not only in music which i love so much, but in many other areas as well, unfortunately i fear that this darkness ,will be percieved by many to be light,if one allows it,the choice is up to us as individuals,to not be decieved
