The first 23 seconds should have been edited, they're mundane and trite. When the music actually starts, it is spellbinding. The song has long been a favourite of mine, and is broad enough to allow each singer to bring their own take to it.

For sheer intensity, however, Marie Knight's searing version has to be heard. The desolation of the lyrics are really brought to life by Marie.
