Ms. Washington sings with such emotions in her voice when she sang this.... Boy have I cried a river and I feel her pain everytime I hear this rendition. None better!
She is the one & only , the queen of the blues with that unforgettable voice and that is Dinah Washington! She died much too young at 39. Her voice will live forever.
She is the one & only , the queen of the blues with that unforgettable voice and that is Dinah Washington! She died much too young at 39. Her voice will live forever.
If you like this lady, have a listen to some old stuff by Timi Yuro. She was heavily influenced by Dinah, and the voices are very similar. The only big difference is that Timi was white, but she was an excellent singer and had so much soul in her voicet
@Xtubelis -WELL i DID HAVE TO LOOK INTO BOTH DEFINITIONS --THE VIDEO IN LYRICS SEARCH ,FROM WHAT i SAW , DIDN'T EVEN RECOGNIZE EITHER WORD --TOTALLY WIPED RIGHT OVER IT (AS UNRECOGNIZED) i DON'T HEAR /PERIPETIAN BEING USED ..HAS A WHOLE OTHER DEFINITION THAN PLEBIAN-THATS SADLY HILARIOUS ../HAVE TO 'SOUND LIKE' TOTAL DEVERSION FROM ORIGINAL WORD IN LYRICS ? WOW IS RIGHT -- THE VIDEO I SAW - DUBBED THE PART WHERE THIS WORD WAS -- THATS SO WRONG .
I am a sixteen year old hip hop producer and i love this song because I can sample it, chipmunk it, and make an incredible beat while the rest of my audience has no freaking idea of its origins and I can be heralded as a super creative genius! omglol!!11!1! YES!
@TheDavizzy good good i'm glad you can steal another's work and get away with it. be happy. or you could throw a footnote in their or actually say where it's from and be heralded as a super creative well-rounded genius
I was born in Spokane, Washington and grew up just a few miles outside of it. Its nice to be recognised for something possitive once in a while. Where did she hear about us, though?
My friend sang this at our high school choir concert a few years ago. She wore a beautiful red evening gown which, coupled with her radiant (natural) blonde hair and incredibly talented voice, really made the song work :)
@StrawberryFairyShoes I never knew it was written for Pete Kellys Blues...but that explains why Julie London got first dibs on it...her husband at the time, Jack Webb, was the director of that film...thanks for the info. !
The first 23 seconds should have been edited, they're mundane and trite. When the music actually starts, it is spellbinding. The song has long been a favourite of mine, and is broad enough to allow each singer to bring their own take to it.
For sheer intensity, however, Marie Knight's searing version has to be heard. The desolation of the lyrics are really brought to life by Marie.
@1408alan So nice to see such a great vocabulary...Someone who has the sensibility and intelligence to appreciate, compare & give constructive criticism...The world is not lost...thanks a lot...She has such excellent diction & sucha a melodic voice..I grew up with all of this music when I was a teen during the sixities in Bklyn NY.
@magcarril Must've been nice to grow up with real music and real voices instead of songs full with foul language or bashing on keyboards making a tune that sticks in people's minds.Am glad my parents are old so that i was able to see artists like The Rat Pack,Ella,Dinah at work..but also dancers like mr. Fred Asaire.
@Jayll1984 I think "good taste" is something we develop...Your parents were loving and sensitive enough to instill this LOVE for Romanticism & Good Music...Your appreciation proves it...Melody, Harmony & Rhythm..the three components of Music...keep it pure...I think 7 wonders of the world are DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI...all music uses these notes to compose songs..no matter what language we speak..La lingua italiana e la lingua della musica.. Ciao, Adios,Bye Bye...Peace Via Music.. VIVA MARIA!
@1408alan I've read a lot of English lit in my life & you write as you think, I also do this. I don't speak to many people on any multi-lingual level it's mostly one language at a time..My mind is sharper than my speaking wits..It's kind of deep, hope you understand..I just love intellectual rapport...Ditto thanks..Peace via Music VIVA MARIA!
@yosef208 the reason you feel like this is because if you break the basses of the arpeggios guitar chord progression you will have the classic james bond tune.
wat a werid way to spell diana haha i love how different it is.. i love this song more artist should sing like this.. now everythings all spaceship sounds.. and music like this isnt altered its there real voice its amazing.. its my favorite music to sing..i love her attitude in this song
I love the "so what?" comment, this song was my grandma's favorite. She sang on two radio stations. In the 30s. She was no Dinah and neither am I but I learned to love this song, and have sung it in my head a thousand times when someone breaks my heart.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@GETTINGYOUNGERONE Sorry, this version is great too, but i wouldn't say that is beats Ella's version. You gave your comment on Ella, that she shows the triumph, whereas Dinah shows the pain. I can't agree on that one either. I think Ellas version shows the pain -and of course the triumph-too. But I agree that Dinahs version is great very emotional and great too.

Anyone care to wager no more than 1 person out of 50 today ever learned what this means? (Scrambling over to dictionary-dot-com doesn't count)
Peripeteian, what's happened to language skill since this ditty was written, and even the spell-check dumbs out on the latter.
