GUYS: Please know what you are doing before you even think about opening a tube chassis. Many, many comments posted demonstrate a complete lack of knowledge.
SAFETY FIRST. There is a SERIOUS risk of a high voltage shock.Trying to save a few bucks on a repair, SECOND.
The original problem was NOT a "cold solder." It was a stress break. Proper fix: Replace the broken capacitor.
Re retensioning tube sockets: You can also get shocked doing that with many amps, even if they are unplugged!

i have a dc-5, did this amp have bad capacitors to begin with, or was it just your amp with that problem? I havent opened it up, but it seems odd that the wire was loose like that in just one amp.
As you said, it was VERY hard to figure out how the terminal wire separated from the CAP in the power supply. The capacitor still functions...the wire just needed to be reattached. Very strange...as I never even bump the amp when I move it. Are you saying yours may have the same problem?
I haven't had any issues, but I am just thinking if it happened to yours perhaps to others it might too. Did you have to discharge the CAP before you soldered? I would imagine alot of voltage pre-stored in there.
James, your Dad would probably laugh at my soldering job! I don't know what type metal the terminals are made from, but getting solder to stick was very difficult!
BTW, that's usually not where you get a cold solder joint! More likely on the PCB. Kudos to you for soldering it and NOT trashing the cap! Now let's hear this Monster in action....
Yeah, I just took a chance at soldering it back together. It's working right now, but I plan to replace the pair of caps someday.
I looked on line, and found some similar spec'd caps, but the the terminals were in the same side, not on each end. Hmmm. I may have to run leads if I do that.

Hey!
What does that Mod do?

It was a fix, actually. Not a mod.
A terminal disconnected from a capacitor in the power section. I soldered it back together, and luckily, it still works today! =)

I grounded it out, but surprisingly no spark/discharge. It was probably already discharged due to being disconnected for a couple of weeks.

I had a similar problem with a tremoverb at one of the tube sockets. Mesa!!!!

Wow. Now that you mention, my tube sockets also got loose. I narrowed the gaps with a jewelers screwdriver. I'm good to go!
