  • GUYS: Please know what you are doing before you even think about opening a tube chassis. Many, many comments posted demonstrate a complete lack of knowledge.

SAFETY FIRST. There is a SERIOUS risk of a high voltage shock.Trying to save a few bucks on a repair, SECOND.

The original problem was NOT a "cold solder." It was a stress break. Proper fix: Replace the broken capacitor.

Re retensioning tube sockets: You can also get shocked doing that with many amps, even if they are unplugged!

  • Hey!

    What does that Mod do?

  • It was a fix, actually. Not a mod.

A terminal disconnected from a capacitor in the power section. I soldered it back together, and luckily, it still works today! =)

  • i have a dc-5, did this amp have bad capacitors to begin with, or was it just your amp with that problem? I havent opened it up, but it seems odd that the wire was loose like that in just one amp.

  • As you said, it was VERY hard to figure out how the terminal wire separated from the CAP in the power supply. The capacitor still functions...the wire just needed to be reattached. Very strange...as I never even bump the amp when I move it. Are you saying yours may have the same problem?

  • I haven't had any issues, but I am just thinking if it happened to yours perhaps to others it might too. Did you have to discharge the CAP before you soldered? I would imagine alot of voltage pre-stored in there.

  • I grounded it out, but surprisingly no spark/discharge. It was probably already discharged due to being disconnected for a couple of weeks.

  • I had a similar problem with a tremoverb at one of the tube sockets. Mesa!!!!

  • Wow. Now that you mention, my tube sockets also got loose. I narrowed the gaps with a jewelers screwdriver. I'm good to go!

  • AHH ,very very Iteresting

  • Yeah, I was SO lucky that I didn't have to take it to a repair shop!

  • hey, don't you have videos where we can see you playing live like on this picture?!

  • Nope, sorry, I don't have live band videos to post. =(

  • too bad, hope u'll post someday !

    Peace

  • HAHA! yes indeed sloppy solder job!

But in coordinating condition!(is that English?)

However it works! good job Robert!

Didn't knew that you were also a technician lol!

    Peace brother !

  • Yeah, I'm a do-it-yourself guy! =D

    Thanks, ivmar1!

    Happy Birthday to Milou!

    Arf, arf!

  • YEP! there you go!! awesome man!!

  • James, your Dad would probably laugh at my soldering job! I don't know what type metal the terminals are made from, but getting solder to stick was very difficult!

  • Great news! And more importatnly... good to hear from u again! Love, DoctorRocker

  • Thanks, man!

Yeah, I'm never to far away...

  • Hi Robert, Great job! I'm glad it was something simple! But.... Please stop in and visit us more cause we miss you at VB. Regards//KP

  • Yeah, I need to get back to making lesson videos!

Thanks for checking in, KP. =)

  • BTW, that's usually not where you get a cold solder joint! More likely on the PCB. Kudos to you for soldering it and NOT trashing the cap! Now let's hear this Monster in action....

  • Yeah, I just took a chance at soldering it back together. It's working right now, but I plan to replace the pair of caps someday.

I looked on line, and found some similar spec'd caps, but the the terminals were in the same side, not on each end. Hmmm. I may have to run leads if I do that.

  • Good Deal Robert, I'm glad it was a simple fix...I'll post it on vanderbilly

    davido

  • OK, thanks! I think I got flagged over there for the "Help!" video that I embedded on the performances section.

    Anyway, it's all good! =)

  • High five, Robert!

  • Yeah man, it's good as new!

  • they are out there waiting to hear you, go get them, rock on

  • Rock on, Robert!

  • great!!!!
