The Testarossa and 512TR are relics of Ferrari's '80s phase where their cars had become less track oriented and a bit soft. The TR was a beautiful but overweight GT car with lots of top speed but only average acceleration and not so great road course performance by supercar standards. Apparently difficult 1-2 shift also. Suited for rich guys that didn't really want to track them. The 512M was a step in the right direction, but today's Ferraris, are the best ever, true track warrriors!!
@400SA ive owned both an 80s ferrari and 930, the latter is a better car in almost every way, the 1-2 shift is not a problem, you just cant rush the gear change - on either!
Also every ferrari that ive driven/know all have the dog leg gearbox, it has nothing to do with rich guys not wanting to track them
There is quite a difference in acceleration between the early Testarossas and a '94 512 TR. Both are heavy and the really get going better at higher speeds, but regarless, it's obvious the Ferrari driver gave up after he realized he had been jumped by the much lighter Porsche. The 512TR is a high 12 second car compared to this 930, probably mid 12 sec car if both are driven well.
i need help here Porsche guys. Some guy is trying to sell me a 1978 930 turbo slantnose. it has 88000 miles on it. he says it's worth 35thousand canadian. is it.
@tayman1975 I saw the other coment about the 993,I love the 993, it's a great car but the 930 slantnose is an icon, in my opinion both are a great choise
This particular Porsche 911 is a piece of Junk compared to the beauty of the Ferrari Testarossa (much better engine, interior, styling, everything!!) I suspect the driver of the Ferrari was either German or a Porsche Fan!
@SSSSssscccireaaaa7 Ferrari before 90's are only Fiat with big engines. The interior was really cheap. The 930 was a luxe car with a very good standard equipment (all leather, electric seat, electric glass, electric mirror, air conditioning and more). Ferrari engines are not renowned for their reliability. The engine of the 930 is recognized as one of the most reliable in the world. Easy to find one with +200.000Km. Check it automobile-sportive com. I'm not a Porsche fan, i'm objective.
@Jitech57 Porsches are just beefed up Volkswagens with big engines! The 911 interior's are crude, austere, bland, boring the list goes on......The 911 is no luxury car! Ferrari and Mercedes yes! Don't be stupid! Ferrari have vastly superior engines to the Porsche's! (much more visually appealing and better built than Porsche's).
I've had the Testa and all types of 911 turbo, the 3.0L and the 3.3L 4 and 5 gear model. Testa is very powerful but very very heavy and finally the acceleration is not bank breaking. The 3.3L turbo, especially in 4 gear model wich most are,is much lighter and once the power is set in and you can change there long gears fast, the power will stay on forever. Even they have virtually almost 100hp short against the Testa, they will kick ass. Finally the Testa will outrun them in final speed...
Overdosistri188 even my E36 3.2 M3 chiped with 350hp and no limiter beats a Testarossa off the line. May be you have a chance on a rolling start. And at the track it will destroy the Testa. Big fan of the Testa since Miami Vice but for performance its to big and heavy. And really I would like to see at a dyno how much power a stock Testa is giving to today.
1980s Ferrari, probably making around 280 real hp today, the Porsche no matter how old probably still delivers every hp it had when new and if tuned probably more. like it says here, 343hp. Thats why the result of this race.
Any way, both crapy drivers, it seems the Porsche driver broke something downshifting at the end of the vid.
i'm a huge enthusiast of both cars.. but i got a bit disappointed with the testarossa though.. i was certain she was going to pull this one off, or at least not leave this kinda gap...
@glenascona lets see you do better, oh wait, you cant because you dont own a ferrari! nothing makes me more upset than ignorant people on here talking shit about things they dont have any business commenting on. get a life, loser.
@glenascona 4... Proverbially speaking, even if you did have a 512TR, there is absolutely no chance that you would beat the Porsche. The 930 turbo isn't known as the widow maker for nothing. It is an absolute fucking weapon, even by today's standards.
@FocSrallyX You are correct. The term was coined for the 996 GT2, but from what I've heard, it has since been applied to the 930 Turbo as well. You really don't wanna mess up in either of these cars!
I had an '86 911 turbo red/black. It was super fast, especially in cold air. It was wicked in the corners, though. You had to know what you were doing. I took it to a track once, and rode passenger while a professional driver/instructor showed me what the car would really do. I almost crapped my pants! Fun times... never should have sold it.
all of the 80's and earlier 911s are under 3000 lbs...and the turbos are a fuckin rocket in a straight line, i still say however that its the most challanging car to drive fast that ive ever been in because of that huge understeer/oversteer
Sophomoric observation. Get in, drive a somewhat-modern (late 80s or later)Ferrari around a race course (512TR or whatever) and then get in an (even modified) Supra TT and tell me it "whips" it. There's alot more to a car than the numbers it puts down on a dyno or at the drag strip. Btw, I've had 5 9000 turbos and 2 900 turbos and they never sounded like a 930, even remotely. Even my 951 hasn't anything like the 930's distinctive sound.
nice vid. Though this is not a 512 it doesnt matter. A 930 with 5K invested would splatter a 512 TR in a straight drag. power to weight, the ferrari is heavy
Thats not at 1994 testarossa. Its got 5 lug rims and the rims are stock 16". Its not a 512TR. I ran up against "stock" early turbos , stock mind you against my stock TR and havent lost yet.. DOnt know if its the driver but... Still , my favorite porsche is a 78 - 82 930 turbo and the 1996 1997 porsche turbo.. both great cars.
What great cars. I've driven a '77 3.0 turbo extensively, but it has the later five speed Porsche transmission put in. Still, those things need some patience launching, but once the boost comes on it's like unleashing the gates of hell.
nothing like the explosive power of the older 930's, the slow takeoff is due to the very large turbo needing time to spool up, but once it did, what a kick, nice car, I had a 77 3.0 so I know what you experience, cheers
I notice that any comment saying the porsche is faster than the ferrari or anything even slightly negative about the ferrari has thumbs down haha lmfao ferrari shagers!
Haha vevetroi you couldnt be more wrong the porsche can have it any day! The ferrari is shit slow, just cos its a ferrari doesnt make it the faster of the two, haha people that bum ferrari just fail!
Actually it can't. As a matter of fact the 930 was the fastest mass produced vehicle on the 1980's. Testarossa and Countachs were slower on acceleration.
Before you make yourself look like an idiot on youtube, maybe you should do some research before making spontaneous utterances of stupidity. Google should be your best friend.
I am a huge Ferrari fan, but a TRs worst nightmare is the 930 Turbo!!!!!
actually, I had a flat tyre (rear left). At the end of the clip you can hear a sound. That's the tyre who brakes (speed on that moment: 260km/u). There was a nail in it, and in the beginning of the sprint the tyre lost already air, but I didn't realise it at that moment.
@hernandezrivas Hell of a lot of wheelspin for somebody who's "not trying"! ;O)
Truth is that that isn't "any old Porsche" - it's a 930 turbo - and, like every Porsche that comes off the Stuttgart production line, its quoted horsepower figure is an absolute minimum. (If the engine doesn't meet the quoted figure, the engine is scrapped.)
Lesser makes quote 'averages'; in the 1980s, one certain Italian manufacturer was notorious for quoting very optimistic figures! (Testarossa: 1984-1991 :O)
A good friend of mine has a Testarossa, and I was really not impressed with the speed of it. It seems like it should be ALLOT faster being a 12 cyl. It does have a good top speed though...

That Testarossa is certainly not a '94. It's one of the models made between '84 and '91. Had it been a 94, the front would have been VERY different.
