I said some i knew weren't losers like this, but i can say that some others do seem to be for this reason. To escape from something and feel "superior."

Not that I am trying to say that you are wrong, but to be honest I think that Otherkin and Furries are more based on Therianism or a spiritual form of Therianthropy. I think that these Furries or Otherkin are confusing their animal totems or guides with their astral image of themselves. Animal totems and the chosen animal that Otherkin and Furries align themselves with are two different things. You can have both but they are definitely not the same.

Used to hang with a great bunch of Therians who took this sort of thing quite seriously. Journeys into the desert, sweat lodges, and most of all LISTENING. Part of the reason I don't hang with the Therian/Otherkin communities in general is that there's so much shouting, either at each other or at presumptive spirit animals, that nobody does much listening or observing.
Of course, there are many totemistic traditions that are not Native American, but that's a discussion for another day.

I think the discrepancies being noted are coming from a bit of word-confusion.
A 'furry' is a casual fan of anything anthromorphic and animal-like. They are the convention-goers and simple appreciators who create fictional characters and all around play at the idea.
