Uhm. The fact that Eden is so hallucinogenic and that the death of the animals obviously is a reflection upon the loss of her son might be an indication of it being less literal... Also I didn't notice any remarks on the fundamentaly simple parallel between behaviorism, the intro to the movie and the later scenes.
