Since when did a priests religious interests and his professional interests become distinct? It sounds to me like Vatican II is really just symptomatic of major problems already extant within the visible Church for years.
@BandofSorensons A priest has by virtue of his office, wide religious interests in the Church and her workings. A priest, who at the same time, is a professional specialist in a particular field of theology, has "professional" interests that may not deal with a particular aspect of the life of the Church. An Old Testament scholar who is a priest is, of course, interested in the liturgy. But he is not interested in the way that a liturgical scholar is. Perhaps that helps.
