Brutal Seas.
I did a stretch in the Navy and was at sea for slightly over 3 years.
I saw some of that kind of weather.
It wears you out just trying to stand upright.
Doing any kind of manual job is a nightmare.
When it got that bad the "Weather Decks" were closed and it was a Court Martial offense to go on exposed decks.
I can't begin to imagine what it was like during the Era Of Sail.
Those guys climbing up rope ladders to tend the sails (which needed a LOT of tending).

@Pigroota yes ofcourse, but its a combination of technical flaws and realy bad weather. when constructed properly and no material fatigues there almost unsinkable.

The ship looks heavily laden. Supposedly that makes it more stable, as I was told that really heavy ships do much better in heavy weather than unfortunate light ones do.

(tankers with cargo hatches on deck are wierd, and this ship has almost no pipelines on deck like most tankers)
