Anyway, the only reason anyone immigrates here illegally is because the legal immigration process can take months and even years, and if you were living in a country like Mexico that has practically become a war zone, and where you could barely earn enough money to feed your family, you might resort to desperate measures too.

There really is no coherent relationship between Irish immigration of the mid-19th c. and onwards and the overrunning of America in the 20th and 21st centuries by illegals. First and most significantly, the Irish legally entered the U.S. Whether they were welcome here is another issue. Secondly, European immigrants of past eras strove to assimilate and work without any kind of governmental entitlements, which, of course, did not exist then. VERY different today. Country Pride packers said they could not find any legal workers. After a raid costing them 70% of their workforce (2300 illegals) US citizens asked them for those jobs which paid Illegals $12 / hour that normally paid $18 - $22 / hour to US citizens. The citizens would have taken the $12 an hour. Some 5300 people applied for the jobs left vacant by illegals.
None of them were hired. 5 months later the same plant was raided again with 782 illegals being caught & sent for deportation.

A lot of Africans have Irish surnames because many large farms employed Irishmen as farm managers and when the batches of slaves came the farm manager often named them. Although most blacks have English names. Yes many Irish immigrants had it tough but come on guys, the blacks had it much worse and the Italians had it worse too. Also look at how tough the Asians had it in the US. Dude, they weren't even allowed to bring their wifes and girlfriends to the US to prevent them from settling down and starting a new life. Don't get me wrong. Many Irish had it hard, no doubt, but not the worst. Even most of the old Americans that emmigrated from Britian and Ireland way back in the 1600's had it really hard. Most had their land confiscated by the English government at the time as they didn't recognise the Queen as leader of their church. Not just Irish Catholics but many protestant religions too, Baptists, Presbeterians, Pentcostilists and others. Read up on the hardships of these and Italians and Asians.

Yes there were Irish slaves. There were English slaves and Welsh ones too. Did you know that the name Wales comes from the Norman word for slave. The Irish regularly raided the coast of Wales taking Welsh and others back to Ireland as slaves. Some say that St. Patrick was one. The US was originally settled by Dutch, New York was New Amsterdam. I know this book. If some people don't care about their roots then that is their choice. If a person of Irish, English, Scottish, French German etc. extraction finds that their heritage or culture isn't important to them, so what? They are not hurting anybody. If they call themselves Scots-American, Anglo-American or Irish-American but don't know much about their ansesters culture they still belong to that ethnic group and are still Scots-American, Irish-American etc.

It's like years ago they used to use the term "real man" and now it's a joke. What is a "real" man or woman or a "real" Anglo or Irish American. There is no exam to pass before one can use these terms. They are labels used to identify people.
