It's like this: Sarah Jane, whose love for the Doctor is as great as the universe they travelled in, was, and often still is, the best-loved of all the Doctor's many companions. The Doctor never fully let on how much he cared for her. Rose was not his only love, and Sarah has been a part of his life more than any of the others. Elizabeth Sladen is still beautiful in her 60's, and the only companion to have such a long-lasting following.
They were of the same species, of course, but it is impossible to say what kind of relationship they had. The first Romana was not at all the Doctor's type, though he was much closer to the 2nd Romana. There are a few hints that he was starting to fall in love with her just before she left him, but
nothing was ever said. The Doctor was probably more affectionate toward Romana than the other way around.
@daisybtoes the romance between the Doctor and Romana II was probably a result of the real-life romance between Tom Baker and Lalla Ward. They were married for a short period of time.
@daisybtoes should be obvious he cares for her the most, look at how many of 'him' she's met! She met the first 5, I believe she met 7 in one of the novels, and now she's met up with 10 and 11? That's not coincidence that's just him checking up on his Sarah Jane. :)
When did she meet 11? I'm afraid I missed several of the first series of 11, but I am going to buy the DVD set of course. She first met 3 and was very close to 4, but 1, 2, and 5 she only met briefly. I didn't know about the novel with 7, though I do not know how cannonical those books are supposed to be.
But yeah, Sarah Jane has always been special to him.
I love Sarah Jane. She complains and gets captured a lot. I like her, as a companion, because it wasn't always the doctor saving the helpless companion, sometimes she had to save herself and even the doctor. She is the best investigative "journalist" in the UNIVERSE. (sorry, I know saying I love this vid and Sarah would have been enough, but I really had to explain why, since some people seem to hate her)
But Sarah Jane is a very active companion, getting in trouble because she is off on her own investigating! Also, in Classic Who, Sarah Jane rescues the doctor about as often as she gets rescued by him.
Sarah's "complaining" is really just playful teasing between her and the Dr, and it was very cute and funny at times, especially with Dr#4.
Elisabeth Sladen clearly impressed WHO producers; in many of her original 18 serials, SJS gets as much screen time as the Dr!
While there are WHO fans who claim to dislike the Sarah Jane character, I often think such "dislike" is envy of her timeless popularity. Some of the nit-picking of SJS borders on silliness. Some say SJS "whines" when the ONLY time she whined was in ARK IN SPACE, and that was written for comedic effect!
Regardless the SJS era of WHO had 37 of 80 episodes rating 10+ million viewers, WHO's highest ratings ever.
That era of consistent hi-ratings for WHO came and went with SJS.
LOL Oh the irony. Sarah may have been "just a girl" but she was a force of nature in the Doctor's life. His best friend, his greatest companion, probably his only true love. (Sorry Rose, I think you're just a phase.) This song probably would've expressed her feelings exactly at times.
Great Job! It's about time someone payed homage to Sarah Jane. Maybe next time, try a song like "Sarah Smile" by Hall and Oates. I'd do it myself if I had any technology skills (just like "old" Sarah, I'm from the "Disco" area... sigh...)
hmmm the song seems to be a bit contentious! It was supposed to be ironic - although I do quite like the song as well! Nice to hear from fellow Sarah fans though.
Ive got to stop wathing SJ vids lol :^(

Well, as Sarah once said, "There's nothing 'only' about being a girl."
That said, I think I would prefer a retrospect-up-to-now video about Sarah Jane Smith using Rod Stewart's "You Wear It Well."

Cool video. You should have put the clip in where Sarah Jane is telling the Queen of Peladon
Thalira: It would be different if I was a man. But I'm only a girl.
Sarah Jane: Now just a minute! There's nothing "only" about being a girl, your Majesty.
