  • Gotta love old beetles!

  • hehe just like a Ford Model T except in reverse lol This has to be one made b4 1950

  • So far I have seen 2 videos of this car. Do you know the expression "The KISS Principle" (unofficial U.S. military term)? This car is an excellent example of it. Anything you don't need, to get down the road faster than on foot or on a bicycle, it won't be part of this one. Thanks for sharing it here. Best regards.

  • Can't tell you how many times I wish I could have done this on mine. The up shot is I am a master at push starting a Bug :)

  • What year VolksWagen is that.

  • SWEET !!!

  • just beautiful!!!

  • if new cars had this i would have gotten out of many dead battery delima's

  • would be fun if you stalled it

  • I love old v-dubs and had one of each of ghia, beetle, and bus. Newest was '67. But you need to realize these cars wouldn't sell today. We are so spoiled. You'll buy one when you get rid of your cell phone is my prediction. Also, you wouln't be able to start any new car made today with a hand crank because of the compression ratio. The old VW engines had very low compression ratios so actually got not great milage considering the very low power output.

  • let's wait 70 years and see if your new ford still starts and drives. I think not. VW forever!!!!!

  • fucking awesomeness

  • They really should bring back hand cranks. I had a dead battery last year and a crank would have saved me a lot of trouble.

  • Great video! I love anything that has to start with a hand crank!

Renault used to build hand crank only cars up into the 1970's or later if I remember correctly.

  • beautiful.......................

  • that need some choke to coldstart...?!

    but nice video!

  • @weightfeather1 Probably left the timing advanced. The timing was manually controlled on them and you had to pull it back (least advance) for starting precisely because of the broken arm hazard. The engine actually can spin backward and the crank ratchet only freewheels with the engine spinning in the right direction. I've had lawnmowers jerk the rope back and almost tear off my arm because the flywheel which contains the magneto slipped and turned relative to the crank causing timing to be off.

  • They sure couldn't design something like this today. We are all too stupid to operate a crank. Someone would forget and leave the car in reverse and back over themselves when the car started. Then they would sue VW because they didn't take steps to protect the consumer. Sad, isn't it?

  • @cheapeep36 Man. you got that right. Well said!

  • The old Datsun pickups from the 1960's had the same feature. I used to have fun filling up at the gas station, then pulling out the hand crank to start it.

  • I wish you could do this with the newer beetles, newer as in 72 super beetle

  • @JoeyBill23 You could actually. You need the crank nut from a thing, the hand crank, and a hole through the rear apron on into the engine bay. Easier said than done though.

  • absolute genius!

  • like starting a fucking ww2 fighter lol sweeeet

  • yikes, look at that bumper moving.

  • Split window bugs are nice!!!

  • É de um desses que eu preciso!!! VW, THE BEST!!!

  • I love your car don't think there are any genuine plit rear window beetles here in Australia....sooo kool

  • Uhhhh... this type of starting was on the first Model T's.

  • Automatic cars Should have this as backup!!

  • Should only take one pull of the crank handle. Out of tune?

  • Nice old Beetle!! The engine sounds great!!! Is that a 1951 Beetle?

  • Ya gotta love the simple ol' 25hp.

Wank it, Krank it, Purrrrrrrrrr .....

  • This would suck ass if you backed up close to a wall then you can't start the shit.

  • @mtvprankes There is a regular starter also. I still have a pull starter accesory I took off my 59 bug years ago. It mounted on the generator pulley and you wrapped a rope around it and gave it a pull like you would a lawn mower.

  • what a beautiful car. thankyou for the videos :)

  • please, show inside this nice car. thanks.

  • Typ 82e Kommandowagen

  • no es mentira cuando se me daño la marcha de mi vocho asi lo encendia con una matraca asi dure como 15 dias en la calle me veian raro el chiste era que jalara

  • no shit

  • cool

  • Jep

  • Génial ! Pas contre, pas pratique quand on cale :d

  • ah the days of rationing and magnitos!

  • Wow...

  • so much for a quick getaway...

  • Holy Moly that HAS to be pre-1950, and way before they began importing them to the US, the US would never allow a hand crank to be imported, so just how old is that bug?

  • @KlunkerRider my beetle has the crank dog nut on the crank pully! buutt...who really knows where that came from hehe

  • This being in Belgium are they speaking French? I know they speak several languages over there.

  • @Nivicoman :

Of course they do. There are two "Groups", with different languages in Belgium, at one part (more in the south, closer to France) there are the "Vallons" who speak french, and in the other Part, (more in the north and so closer to the Netherlands) there are the "Flams" who speak netherlandish. The Relationship is not always free from Difficulties, as far as I know...

  • @Clerence1969 My father has some Belgium in his heritage, don't know which area.

  • lol never saw one of these before, and im living in germany...^^

  • Why did VW have to stop making the original Beetle in 2003? I know they were concerned about emissions but modern technology does wonders. They could have hung the stuff on the Boxer and cleaned it up. I guess everything has to end sometime.

  • @Nivicoman the mexicans were the last to produce them i think. VW dropped them when they put more emphasis on things like the rabbit and the golf.

wish they;d bring back the orig beetle and not these gay new ones.

  • @pedekiller I TOTALLY AGREE

  • @pedekiller you are right. Here in Mexico, Volkswagen decided to "move on" and finish the beetle production (worst mistake ever made by the Volkswagen company). They started importing cheap and really bad brazilian produced cars, and producing their own line of expensive and complicated cars. But the irony that today the beetle is one of the most wanted here in Mexico is really something. Even the "New Beetle" couldn't last more than 12 years of production, it really sucked!.

  • @pedekiller Me too. It's not a real Beetle if it doesn't have a rear-mounted air-cooled engine.

  • @MrBrombomb here here!! i think the reason VW dumped the beetle was the emissions. be very cool to pimp out the old chassis design with modern regulations and somewhat re-invent the wheel. still, nothing beats the original, and with over 114,000,000 made then they shouldn't become scarce.

  • @pedekiller Probably can't control engine temperature precisely enough to keep emissions down. When they designed the beetle they chose a big enough fan to gaurantee that it wouldn't overheat in worst case conditions such as slogging through desert sand at 130 degrees F. Therefore in more moderate conditions the engine would take a long time to warm up and with more unburned hydrocarbons and CO.

  • @MrBrombomb it does

  • love it

  • I see a single exhaustpipe and small backlights:-) Year 1950/51 or older?

  • Bout a '47 model.

  • Reminds you of just how much energy is in the battery and in the gasoline. Imagine pushing your car as far as 1 cup of gasoline can.

  • military beetle....... Bad ass none the less..

  • you can buy the end bolts and starters still its a fun back up to have

  • 0:32 you can lost a finger in the belt pulley nice beetle

  • Nice split window bro !!!!! very rare

  • yep definatley a ww2 prototype

  • New cars should have this as a back up.

  • @SakoTGrimes why if u can push it ??

  • @SakoTGrimes you'd never do it

beetle idles at like 500rpm at lowest and modern engines are about 1k rpm

however, i do belive that automatics should come with a feature to lock the trans into 2nd gear for roll starting, as soon as the engine started it goes back to normal.

and modern small car engines need a HEAVIER flywheel because the bastards stall so bloody easily!! major pain in ass. even modern diesel's now stall easy. i never stalled my '87 diesel van & ive never stalled my beetle either.

  • @SakoTGrimes The higher compression ratio of new cars would make this dangerous if they kick back. People used to get their arms broken just with Model T's and their 5:1 compression. A typical modern car has 10:1 or higher.

  • @Nivicoman

    Freewheel - problem solved!

  • @SakoTGrimes You couldn't do that with a modern engine because it has too much compression.

  • @SakoTGrimes I AGREE...

  • This is most definitely a KdF, with the shovel attached to the side of it. Look at his over videos.

  • VERY NICE VINTAGE BUG!!!

  • really nice split window bug.

  • great video does anyone know more about this model as to type, year, model any thing

  • I would have thought 1947/48 going by the hubcaps.

Very nice example, what is known as a "standard model". The more common "deluxe" was not brought in until '49 and featured various extras such as nicer interior upholstery, chrome trim and a brighter and less dull colour scheme. However, today a rare standard model is often worth much more than the equivalent deluxe.

    Hope this helps!

    Will

    (lovely split!)

  • No, it's a KDFwagen. WII nazi military car. Has a shovel on the side, scary cable powered brakes, and about 25hp.

  • This is so old-school and cool at the same time.

Back in the day, this was the definition if P.I.M.P.

  • You can see the motor is in good shape!

  • He needs a tune-up. Mine used to start on half a flip.

  • Old School

  • Wow!! Never knew that a crank-start Beetle existed!!

  • Awesome car. I'd love a classic bug.

  • German engieniering ,,is the best!!!

  • not any more it isnt, try jap

  • @comelunch103 fuck yeah

  • @comelunch103 Germans...long on engineering, and short on passion. - Jeremy Clarkson.

  • @comelunch103 i totally agree

  • @comelunch103 damn fucking right german engineering is the best funny im part german

  • @comelunch103 Only if you like an overcomplicated design

  • @comelunch103

Didn't Henry Ford come up with this 40 years before VW ?

  • @comelunch103 the best OVER engineered

  • Wooow, very cool.

I would be to much a coward because of backfiring.

    5/5*

  • I had a 66 baja that had a pull rope pully on the engine. Fun stuff! Didn't have to use after I changed it to a 12 volt system.

  • cool shit.

  • bodybuilder?

  • watch your head when you do this...

  • that is so sool

im gonna try to figure out how to make my bug like that

then when battery or starter go out then no problem

  • This car is what I call the "gutless wounder"

  • its ok to be retarded. there is other opinions of my poor fictionless endless nickname...you can find friends this way, such as "oh what a cute engine". ok? brainless hardly wonder? I bet you like hondas and evos. Alot of chances for "special" friends there too...have a special day, my special friend. wanna be my friend? I'm hardly special with world records and flying right over many peoples heads...for over 50 years now...

  • Aqui no Brasil um fusca desses pode valer até uns US$20.000!!!! é uma raridade que parece estar em perfeitas condições, parabéns.

  • old Datsun 320 pickup's have the self-crank bonus feature--about 1959 to 1965.

  • Amazing.

  • Oh man!

  • Is that a VW or a KdF?

The design top speed was 100 km/h.

  • este motor é 1200cc?????

  • this vw must be 1940.s it very nice i love it keep it up and i belive it has 45 hp.

  • well your close. I belive this is a 43 bug, and the 40 hp motor didn't come out untill 1963. So this is probably an 1100 with 36 hp

  • im sorry but i belive that after 1961 its 34 hp, 1960 had 30 hp becos i had one original 1960 and it had 30 hp and that split rear window is 1957 and older

  • acctualy the split only lasted untill 1952/53 (depends on the country)

57 they had the oval, then in 58 they went to the big rear window

  • probably the best engines ever made, go for ever.

  • I used to start my '68 when the battery was dead by jacking up a rear wheel, putting it in fourth gear, setting the high speed idle ratchet on the carb and yanking the rear wheel until it started. Crude, but effective.

  • What is the top speed of these lil buggers?

  • Top Speed was probably 100 km/h or about 62mph

  • uh i think Herbie the Luv Bugs top speed was 200 mph

  • well I was talking about the one in this video lol sorry ^^ one of Hitler's requirements for the Volkswagen or People's car was that it could travel at least 100 Km/h

  • love it

  • That must be tough... the old cars like the model T were easy to hand start cuz they had low compression.

  • What if you have forgot to set in free gear, and it`s in rear !

  • hahahaha you got a point

  • well... then your kinda pretty much screwed

  • trust me, most cars never start on the first crank with a handle, and the second the engine has slightly turned the car will move forwards/back depending on what gear its in! it would also more than likely stall if it was to start!

  • If you have set it in rear you can notice when you try to start it up!

  • That is a beautiful bug.

  • hermoso no hay otra palabra

  • is that a 1200cc? does that thing fit onto the gland nut of the flywheel?

  • how old is that bug?, i have self a 1950

  • ok, i was in my garage trying to fix the throttle on my 73' super. in my attempts, i dismantled the air intake and the carb. after fixing the problem i continued to put the parts back together and re-install them, i tried to turn it on and it wouldn't even try to turn over. anyone have any suggestions?

  • take it to a garage

  • you never spin an engine, quater turns only

  • Agreed, but that only applies if the motor istuned right & ready to be started. Sometimes they need a little extra help, just as a cold motor will need extra cranking; no difference. Besides, extra cranking won't hurt the motor.

  • That's very cool!!

  • IT lives!

  • Great! Never seen a Beetle getting fired up like this!

A colleague of mine owns a 4.9 Litre Ford Pickup, I wonder how long it would take us to start this one manually and NOT get our arms broken ;-))

  • lovely engine thay havent changed it since it was first built

  • wow the oldest vw ive seen was a 1950.

  • AMAZING!!!!!! This is the first time I ever see this, thanks for uploading!!!!!!

  • amazing bug, congratulations

  • waouh quel plaisir pour les oreilles !!! elle ronronne bien la miss !

mais c'est du boulot quand même ...

  • If that backfired ... wouldn't it do some damage to your arm?

  • If this is as old as I think it is, the engine displaces 985cc and produces 24hp at 2000rpm. The Kubelwagen type 81 used the same engine. These things use an unsynchronized transmission, so the transmission has to be braked to shift it!

  • that looks like a pain in the ass

  • Well next time I feel like braking my wrist i'll call you!

  • Awesome WWII War Bug!!

  • Ha ha. I've finally managed to find (and respond to) video of a car with less horsepower than my electric gokart! Thanks!

By the way, that is indeed one cool old Beetle, and of course, way more valuable than my kart.

  • wish mine had a crank ;)

  • Sweet I have a 69 nissan patrol thats crank start but its a 6 cylinder 4.litre so its a lot harder to start but It only takes 1/2 crank to start.

  • wow...an old split window. too cool!

  • Very very cool.

  • I saw a guy start his '49 at Bug O Rama one year, but all he had to do was just one crank. But very cool video none the less.

  • Is this a pre war KDF ?!?

  • its 1941 or '42 i think

  • I have to start my new BMW this way...things haven't changed much

  • No more replaceing dead starters.

  • KDF power, gotta love the original 25 horse

  • hehehehe... reallt classic. ilove vw's

  • that chick thats laughing is an idiot

  • Hmmmm Glad my 54oval has a starter motor or Id get tired of her real quick! did your head have a bump on it then?

  • ha nice

  • completly diferent feeling when starting up the engine

  • what the shit!!! thats a pain in the ass..my friend has a 67 bug with 53hp..it sounds outrageous

  • i'd smack the chick thats laughing

  • awesome kdf , love it, but i think i would rather push start it ,it might be easier

  • You can tell by the paint its a wartime model, or very shortly after the war.. I wonder how many peoples heads that engine lid has bruised over the decades :-D

  • First time i've ever actually seen the crank used on these; usually it's just for show :-p

  • looks hard work to start it up has it got electric ignition?

  • Croisette,

Congrats on the nice KDF Wagen. Do you have more pictures of your vw somewhere, a site or photo album?

    Regards!

    Capitaomiller

  • I've just added a new short video. Look at it and enjoy.

  • Top speed of 80km/h?! It really seems rare model! :P Manual startup would be nice :D

  • LOL NICE

  • 1100 cc?? that is a vaery rare model indeed.not fast at all though

  • Yes, 1131cm to be exact and top speed of 80 km/h

  • 25hp!
