much richer voice than labrie??? i don't think so.. the voice you here is just technical. All vibrato, high notes especially high notes was popular back then. Hes got a good voice much better than many others out there but excuse me i couldn't imagine Dream Theater without Labrie's voice and especially with a voice like this who's trying to sound like others just because it was popular. At least! Labrie may be a little out of tune etc live but he is natural and thats important
@citizen773 Because he's not a natural Rock/Metal singer. He lacks the power. He has a smooth texture to his voice and sounds whiny on the higher octaves. He's a great vocalist in his own right, but in the world of metal his voice just sounds out and barely fitting. He could be potentially the greatest vocalist of the pop genre, or a legend of soft acoustic rock, but when it comes to Metal he's a little disappointing.
Yeah, sure you like his vocals. But what if it was LaBrie singing in 85-86, and Chris Collins nowadays? This is like a bad version of Geddy Lee. But music itself is more real-progressive.
I'm going to get all their Official Bootlegs when I get a job. So far I only got the When Dream and Day Reunite DVD and the Live Scenes from New York with the original 9/11 artwork..... This is awesome though, This will definitely be my next purchase.
@supersmashbrosevil Yes it fucking is! lol He has a FAR richer voice than LaBrie. James always sounded thin on the higher notes. This guy hits them with a power and richness matched only by the likes of Geoff Tate (in the day) and John Arch (who can STILL do it)
@MyMytalMajesty Chris Collins is now in a band called Winterspell, and /watch?v=7J3xsy4QvrY doesn't sound much like death metal to me. He can do death growls, though, which is rather amazing given that he can still hit high notes today. Reminds me of the singer for Anacrusis.
From what I've heard (and I mean I have the tracks and listened to them) during live concerts he sucks. Search for a Bootleg named Gates of Babylon '86
Crocodilewerewolf, How can you possibly compare Octavarium to Metropolis? Octavarium is one of the worst DT songs ever written, while Metropolis is one of the greatest songs PERIOD ever written.
@chuchaka Man I bet you don't play an instrument. Simply because Octavatium is musically boring compared to Metorpolis. The Third movement of Octavarium is nice, along with the intro by Ruddess. But all other parts, especially the Fourth movment isn't good by DT standards. Remember this is all my opinion, just as Oct. being better than Met. is yourse. what's wrong with Oct. for me, is it's too long and not interesting enough. Consider ACOS & when the water breaks for amazing, interesting DT work
@12ultramagnus actually i play guitar. heck why would i be listening to dt if i didnt play an instrument? (i know there are people who dont but most people who listen to dt do). i dont know how you find the song not interesting but hey thats why we have our opinions. yes ive heard ACOS and when the water breaks but i still think octavarium is better. not that those two arent AMAZING
I'm very particular about the type of Dream Theater I listen to. Back in 10th grade i thought they were basically the best band ever. Now I realize they were a band with incredible moments of glory but generally are mediocre. If Dream Theater could harness the glory of songs like this one, Octavarium, Metropolis, Hell's Kitchen and create a consistent permanent sound like those... they'd be amazing. but they can't do it. sorry. i'm bound to offend many here.
@crocodilewerewolf they don't do that because they don't want to. they don't wanna be the same band forever. they change things and do it different because that's what they want to do. not because they're incapable of doing it. i somewhat agree with you on wishing they made more stuff like metropolis and octavarium. but their other stuff is really good too.
I heard this song for the first time 20 years ago and now it's the first time for 10 years that I'm relistening to this and I've to say that I prefer this stuff sung by Collins largely to the most things that Dream Theater did with Labrie
...and because they played at least one song from each album/era of DT. I really wish they would have played A Vision, though! That was by far one of the best Majesty, if not best DT, songs
Nop, they played this at radio city because they were "travelling onto a journey" of their music, and before Wehn Dream and day unites, it was majesty, the songs they played with Collins.
I think I'd have to agree, but its a real shame considering he has a pretty remarkable vocal range. I think you can tell he often hits the wrong note even in the recording (despite it being an early rough mix)
Collins' voice is not bad at all... but I don't understand how someone can find it similar to Geddy Lee's. Dominici's got a similar voice to Lee, not this guy. Btw, Collins sucked really bad live (Listen to the 1986 Gates of Babylon boot if you've got a chance to).
Collins seemed to hit high notes and do them good. Dominici had a nice soft voice when he sang for DT. LaBrie has both and more, so i'm glad things turned out like that. Though I can't say Dominici nor Collins are bad, they're actually great vocalists.
Yeah, he kinda quieted down after Images and Words, because they kind of mutually consented that he was there only to play bass lines to give support for the others... Darn shame says I!
As far as JM quieting down after Images and Words goes, I'd honestly have to say that Scenes From a Memory was easily the coolest album as far as the bass is concerned. His tone, his chops, the way he worked around and with the chord structures in a lot of the songs was phenomenal!

@Metalocalipstick You bring up a good point. haha but seriously Charlie has an interesting sound on the record but he couldn't even match pitch a lot of the time live. And I like this guys sound better than charlie's. If you like charlie that's ok.
I think Chris had ALOT of potential....ALOT! But I think his problem was that he oversang the shit out of EVERYTHING!!! U think he sounds bad here?! Look up his band Winterspell!!! Mother fucker sounds like a pissed off drunk elmo lol

No it's not a question of hate - not at all! I'm not a fan of Dream Theater though I had always a huge respect towards them.
But I particurlarly loved always this song from their early period - more roughly produced and sung!
