much richer voice than labrie??? i don't think so.. the voice you here is just technical. All vibrato, high notes especially high notes was popular back then. Hes got a good voice much better than many others out there but excuse me i couldn't imagine Dream Theater without Labrie's voice and especially with a voice like this who's trying to sound like others just because it was popular. At least! Labrie may be a little out of tune etc live but he is natural and thats important

@citizen773 Because he's not a natural Rock/Metal singer. He lacks the power. He has a smooth texture to his voice and sounds whiny on the higher octaves. He's a great vocalist in his own right, but in the world of metal his voice just sounds out and barely fitting. He could be potentially the greatest vocalist of the pop genre, or a legend of soft acoustic rock, but when it comes to Metal he's a little disappointing.

@supersmashbrosevil Yes it fucking is! lol He has a FAR richer voice than LaBrie. James always sounded thin on the higher notes. This guy hits them with a power and richness matched only by the likes of Geoff Tate (in the day) and John Arch (who can STILL do it)

@MyMytalMajesty Chris Collins is now in a band called Winterspell, and /watch?v=7J3xsy4QvrY doesn't sound much like death metal to me. He can do death growls, though, which is rather amazing given that he can still hit high notes today. Reminds me of the singer for Anacrusis.

@chuchaka Man I bet you don't play an instrument. Simply because Octavatium is musically boring compared to Metorpolis. The Third movement of Octavarium is nice, along with the intro by Ruddess. But all other parts, especially the Fourth movment isn't good by DT standards. Remember this is all my opinion, just as Oct. being better than Met. is yourse. what's wrong with Oct. for me, is it's too long and not interesting enough. Consider ACOS & when the water breaks for amazing, interesting DT work

I'm very particular about the type of Dream Theater I listen to. Back in 10th grade i thought they were basically the best band ever. Now I realize they were a band with incredible moments of glory but generally are mediocre. If Dream Theater could harness the glory of songs like this one, Octavarium, Metropolis, Hell's Kitchen and create a consistent permanent sound like those... they'd be amazing. but they can't do it. sorry. i'm bound to offend many here.

I think I'd have to agree, but its a real shame considering he has a pretty remarkable vocal range. I think you can tell he often hits the wrong note even in the recording (despite it being an early rough mix)

Collins seemed to hit high notes and do them good. Dominici had a nice soft voice when he sang for DT. LaBrie has both and more, so i'm glad things turned out like that. Though I can't say Dominici nor Collins are bad, they're actually great vocalists.

As far as JM quieting down after Images and Words goes, I'd honestly have to say that Scenes From a Memory was easily the coolest album as far as the bass is concerned. His tone, his chops, the way he worked around and with the chord structures in a lot of the songs was phenomenal!
