go to 1:12 and let me tell you what Ayer's gaze says: "why am I not talking? Have you forgotten how much I like to talk? Can't you tell by the look on my face that you are sound like douche bag. You have 5 seconds to shut up and then I'm gonna light this cigarette and put out the fire by means of your anus!"
I was taught by a man who was taught by Gilbert Ryle. His knowledge and comprehension of Wittgenstein, propositional calculus and the history of philosophical metalanguage was simply overwhelming to an epsilon-minus semi-moron like me.
He smoked 40-plus of some filthy brand of cigarette every day for some reason and, perhaps oddly, he did not think much of Alfred Ayer.
An amazing discussion, but at about 6:00 Bryan Magee makes a very dubious point about language. The philosophical analysis of language is by no means a new thing: it was an intriguing feature of Stoicism and especially of Scholaticism, for example.

didn't know you could have 'degrees' of Britishness. Is this the only comment you can make on this interesting discussion? You're American aren't you?
@ContraWagner cig smoke not only scars your lungs tho, there is significant evidence it lowers your iq also. Ayer was just lucky in that he was so intelligent he had plenty of iq points to spare :)
I agree. I don't agree with a lot of what he said, but I do like his character. Also, it takes a very likeable person to make this part of philosophy very interesting.
Someone interpret all the long pants and smoking debate comments in logical positivist terms, I've had enough metaphysics for an Aj Ayer film!

Yes, and he makes it a really compelling subject.
I shall have to buy a book of his now!

Cigarette companies should've hired Ayer for their advertisements. I've never felt so pressured to start smoking.
