@scarface00769 UMP-45 has more knockdown power with less recoil than the UMP-40. The 40 has too much muzzle rise. And if you need more penetration, consider something that's not a pistol caliber, perhaps compact AR platform chambered in .223 or .308
Does the .40 have a higher fire rate than the .45? It's gas operated, right? Like the G36? But at the same time, I imagine the bolt has to do a shorter stroke due to lower amount of recoil.
Of course I'm no expert. I do enjoy shooting .40 from time to time through pistols. .45 is beast, but I prefer .40 for a lot of reasons.

Ive fired both the ump45 and mp5, the mp5 is definitely more accurate and has a faster fps witch means more penetration. The ump45 is accurate to but its got about 800fps making it have less penetration and more knock down power per say.
wow, just reading this, you have no idea what your talking about, not to mention the fact that you have not and i repeat have not fired either of said weapons. first off. MP5 is very inaccurate, menaing not accurate, the ump45 was created for 3 reasons, better accuracy over the MP5, better controlablity, and better armor penetration. More fps has nothing to do with penetration. penetration comes down to internal bullet dynamics or IBD. not Feet per second
How would you get better control and accuracy from the UMP when its a .45 and the mp5 is a 9mm. I would think you would get better control from the 9 along with better acuracy thats why more people use it anyway. (never shot either but have shot .40 pistol and 380 which is pracitcally a 9mm)
first and fore most. lower rate of fire. its alot easier to control a weapon that has a low rate of fire. Second Weight. If the weapon weighs more...which it does the weapon itself reduces felt recoil. Third. the .45 caliber round is alot more accurate in longer barrels. out of a pistol it is so so. out of anything longer than 7 inches it is very accurate. The heavier bullet is less affected by wind and other variables than the 9mm. take it or leave it
It still shoots pretty fast and even with the weight a ,45 has some kick. Well you got some pretty good reasons. I still think though that an mp5 would be easier to control either way in the real world your never gonig full auto unless you have a reason too.

umps are crap, hk went backwards when they released it,
the mp5 has the delayed locking bolt (roller delayed action)
which means the round is fired, and exits the barrel before a mechanism unlocks the bolt and allows the recoil of the case to cycle the bolt and eject the shell, and chamber a new round.
wheereas the ump line
simply uses a reliable but high maintenance blow back closed bolt.
its basically the same as a handgun.
the firearm also retails for more than it will ever be worth.
they arent as bad as your making them sound, they are way more simple than the MP5 and way more realiable, comparing the MP5 and UMP is like saying the UMP is the AK-47 or 74 and the MP5 is the M4 or M16.
@zooders The UMP and the MP5 are practically the same gun, aside from a few minor design differences. The action functions basically the same and they are both made from the CETME action design. HK doesnt do much original stuff, they would rather buy up and rebadge someone elses product than build their own. The MP5 is just a slightly better build of the UMP.
...and finally but not least: the HK G11.. and I quote:

@GODSPEEDseven you got me on the G11. Thats pretty original. But the XM8 and the G36 are basically just rebuilt M4s that look better. The belt fed grenade launcher was a copy too I believe, but of course the HK works better. The OICW is another M4 design copy with a hopped up launcher on it. And personally I like the CAW, but its not really cutting edge either. And who needs a P11?

@hardman476 not true. plastic receivers have less climb because of the lack of weight. Something that is all metal will produce more inertia than something that is mostly plastic. the plastic also has a fun property. metal absorbs recoil and plastics dissipate recoil. try not to pick fights with gunsmiths

@hardman476 that is only partial right. A longer slide on a pistol which would give more leverage and weight of the slide reduces recoil. You are also talking about a pistol and trigger control is everything on a pistol because you only have 2 points of contact. With carbines and rifles you have 3 points of contact and many of the modern ones like the M-16 variants release gas pressure upwards at the end of the barrel to reduce muzzle climb and use a bugger spring in the rear to reduce recoil.
@hardman476 not to mention with a smaller bolt which is lighter you are not going to get as much recoil. The M-16 or AR-15 equivalent is a great example of very low recoil.
@zooders I really thing he is confusing pistols with rifles and carbines. With a pistol the slides weight reduces recoil and the length of the slide itself. I think he also does not understand what 2 and 3 points of contact are and how a heavy bolts, lack of buffer springs, big caliber aka more gun powder contribute to more recoil in general.
@zooders I think it just comes down to lack of shooter experience and lack of research and all the various myths. Its still amazing how people want to run around with old weapons and say they are superior without ever firing them or doing research. I had this argument the other day with the 1911 which is inferior to all modern auto's in every aspect today.

@zooders you should really stop while you are ahead. The AK-47 sucks balls. Its inaccurate due to its barrel flexing while firing, "Big Bullet" that is only good against hard targets and does less damage to flesh then 5.45 and 5.56. Why do you think the Russians dropped it? Less ammo capacity on a troop. 100 rounds vs. 270 rounds. The AK-47 was designed for 300 yards while most engagements take place at 200 yards or less look up studies conducted after WWII.
@zooders Its the type of gun you buy when you want to shoot for cheap with an assault weapon. Or the type of gun you hand out to people who you don't care about. Who are these awesome countries still field a 70 year old gun really? You need to do some more research. During the 60's and 70's Europe was experimenting with calibers around 4.5 to 5.5 until NATO agreed on the American 5.56 or .223 civilian equivalent. Russia followed with the 5.45 down from the 7.62 in 1974.
@zooders well, realistically the UMP is basically a miniature G36, whereas the MP5 is a miniature G3. both the G3 and the G36 are fine weapons, but the G36 is a much more intelligent design, and the UMP mirrors this against the MP5 :)
The MP5 is a bit more comfortable to shoot IMO. I also like 9mm in a sub gun more than 45, 9mm is just more controllable and its alot easier to make accurate follow up shots. Since no one in the military uses sub guns anymore, if your an LE officer, a 9mm MP5 with good quality expanding ammo is more firepower than you need. Also, the MP5 feels more solid. The UMP just feels flimsy. Ergonomics are about the same. I like the MP5.
One of the best on the market.. but the slower rate of fire is always strange to see/hear/feel.

@th4Guy77 It has moderate recoil for the .45 round it uses. And it's effective range is around 40-50 metres, the .45 pistol round doesn't allow it to go much further.

they made it in 45 mostly but made a few other models in 40 S&W and 9mm also. Neither of the other models had the success that the UMP45 did though.

Not quite... it has more weight and energy, but it's slower moving and larger.
Liken it to the difference between a marble from a sling shot to a BB gun. Marble vs pop can... can flys off and gets a real good ding in it.
BB gun vs pop can... a hole through the can and it probably just falls over.
Not the same scale by any means but it's just for concept.

Ive fired both the ump45 and mp5, the mp5 is definitely more accurate and has a faster fps witch means more penetration. The ump45 is accurate to but its got about 800fps making it have less penetration and more knock down power per say.

wow, just reading this, you have no idea what your talking about, not to mention the fact that you have not and i repeat have not fired either of said weapons. first off. MP5 is very inaccurate, menaing not accurate, the ump45 was created for 3 reasons, better accuracy over the MP5, better controlablity, and better armor penetration. More fps has nothing to do with penetration. penetration comes down to internal bullet dynamics or IBD. not Feet per second

How would you get better control and accuracy from the UMP when its a .45 and the mp5 is a 9mm. I would think you would get better control from the 9 along with better acuracy thats why more people use it anyway. (never shot either but have shot .40 pistol and 380 which is pracitcally a 9mm)

first and fore most. lower rate of fire. its alot easier to control a weapon that has a low rate of fire. Second Weight. If the weapon weighs more...which it does the weapon itself reduces felt recoil. Third. the .45 caliber round is alot more accurate in longer barrels. out of a pistol it is so so. out of anything longer than 7 inches it is very accurate. The heavier bullet is less affected by wind and other variables than the 9mm. take it or leave it

It still shoots pretty fast and even with the weight a ,45 has some kick. Well you got some pretty good reasons. I still think though that an mp5 would be easier to control either way in the real world your never gonig full auto unless you have a reason too.

MP5 is definetely better. It has larger magazines, better accuracy over longer distances, and I'm pretty sure it fires a larger calibre.
Only thing it's worse at is the RPM.

@moccamonster nah, it has a smaller caliber than the U.M.P. It can shoot a 9mm, 10mm, and .40 round while the UMP shoots 9x19mm, .40, and then goes up to a .45

umps are crap, hk went backwards when they released it,
the mp5 has the delayed locking bolt (roller delayed action)
which means the round is fired, and exits the barrel before a mechanism unlocks the bolt and allows the recoil of the case to cycle the bolt and eject the shell, and chamber a new round.
wheereas the ump line
simply uses a reliable but high maintenance blow back closed bolt.
its basically the same as a handgun.
the firearm also retails for more than it will ever be worth.

@zooders The UMP and the MP5 are practically the same gun, aside from a few minor design differences. The action functions basically the same and they are both made from the CETME action design. HK doesnt do much original stuff, they would rather buy up and rebadge someone elses product than build their own. The MP5 is just a slightly better build of the UMP.

@GODSPEEDseven you got me on the G11. Thats pretty original. But the XM8 and the G36 are basically just rebuilt M4s that look better. The belt fed grenade launcher was a copy too I believe, but of course the HK works better. The OICW is another M4 design copy with a hopped up launcher on it. And personally I like the CAW, but its not really cutting edge either. And who needs a P11?

@hardman476 not true. plastic receivers have less climb because of the lack of weight. Something that is all metal will produce more inertia than something that is mostly plastic. the plastic also has a fun property. metal absorbs recoil and plastics dissipate recoil. try not to pick fights with gunsmiths

@zooders but plastic receivers have much less weight then steel receivers hence more muzzle rise whereas steel wighs more hence the gun stays on target...eg. a beretta stays on target more then the glock because of the wight of beretta!

@zooders you cant compare the Kriss because its not blow back but a totally different design, look it up to get a better explantion but unlike conventional recoil operated designs, when the bolt recoils back its goes down rather then just back hence very little muzzle climb...as i said its hard to expaline so you tube it and you will see what i mean

@hardman476 that is only partial right. A longer slide on a pistol which would give more leverage and weight of the slide reduces recoil. You are also talking about a pistol and trigger control is everything on a pistol because you only have 2 points of contact. With carbines and rifles you have 3 points of contact and many of the modern ones like the M-16 variants release gas pressure upwards at the end of the barrel to reduce muzzle climb and use a bugger spring in the rear to reduce recoil.

@zooders I really thing he is confusing pistols with rifles and carbines. With a pistol the slides weight reduces recoil and the length of the slide itself. I think he also does not understand what 2 and 3 points of contact are and how a heavy bolts, lack of buffer springs, big caliber aka more gun powder contribute to more recoil in general.

Its still amazing how people want to run around with old weapons and say they are superior without ever firing them or doing research. I had this argument the other day with the 1911 which is inferior to all modern auto's in every aspect today.

@zooders you should really stop while you are ahead. The AK-47 sucks balls. Its inaccurate due to its barrel flexing while firing, "Big Bullet" that is only good against hard targets and does less damage to flesh then 5.45 and 5.56. Why do you think the Russians dropped it? Less ammo capacity on a troop. 100 rounds vs. 270 rounds. The AK-47 was designed for 300 yards while most engagements take place at 200 yards or less look up studies conducted after WWII.

@zooders Its the type of gun you buy when you want to shoot for cheap with an assault weapon. Or the type of gun you hand out to people who you don't care about. Who are these awesome countries still field a 70 year old gun really? You need to do some more research. During the 60's and 70's Europe was experimenting with calibers around 4.5 to 5.5 until NATO agreed on the American 5.56 or .223 civilian equivalent. Russia followed with the 5.45 down from the 7.62 in 1974.

@zooders well, realistically the UMP is basically a miniature G36, whereas the MP5 is a miniature G3. both the G3 and the G36 are fine weapons, but the G36 is a much more intelligent design, and the UMP mirrors this against the MP5 :)

The MP5 is a bit more comfortable to shoot IMO. I also like 9mm in a sub gun more than 45, 9mm is just more controllable and its alot easier to make accurate follow up shots. Since no one in the military uses sub guns anymore, if your an LE officer, a 9mm MP5 with good quality expanding ammo is more firepower than you need. Also, the MP5 feels more solid. The UMP just feels flimsy. Ergonomics are about the same. I like the MP5.
