This scene is true! It says so in the appendices of the book.
It also says that there are very few dwarf women born compared to men. But dwarves still get offspring slowly, because they're monogamous, and both dwarf genders can be quite jealous what comes to relationships.
Or then they're simply not interested in relationships as much as they're interested in their work.
I strongly feel that Tolkien should not have made his dwarven women and children have beards. A beard is a masculine, adult thing. In my world, dwarf women are curvaceous, and beautiful women with just a little side burn/mutton chop near the end of the jaws.
@Jakegothicsnake 1) who the fuck sits around and thinks about dwarf women? 2) aragorn is obviously joking 3) tolkein didn't make this movie. 4) you're an idiot.
@Jakegothicsnake Aragorn was NOT saying the dwarf women had beards, he was replying to how Gimli said no one could tell the difference. Aragorn was pointing out that the difference was the beards. Dwarf men had them, females didn't.
@xIegionx From "The History of Middle-Earth, Vol 11 - The War of the Jewels," Chapter 13 "Concerning the Dwarves."
"For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike; nor indeed can their womankind be discerned by those of other race, be it in feature or in gait or in voice..."
@xIegionx But why would Dwarf women remove their facial hair? What with women having beards "from the beginning of their lives," coupled with other races having trouble discerning between Dwarven males and females ("nor indeed can their womankind be discerned by those of other race, be it in feature or in gait or in voice"), wouldn't it be more likely that most choose to retain their beards?
"It was said by Gimli that there are few dwarf-women, probably no more than a third of the whole people. They seldom walk abroad except at great need. They are in voice and appearance, and in garb if they must go on a journey, so like to the dwarf-men that the eyes and ears of other peoples cannot tell them apart."
Since beards are part of the appearance, not the garb, of Dwarf men, wouldn't it be safe to conclude that Dwarf women were bearded as well?
@BrentDubroc It could be a joke. Gimli in the films was mostly just that. A comedy relief when things got too serious. So said Peter jackson. In one of the Q&A's from a comiccon he was asked about this, and thus what I had said, that Aragorn was referring to the men having beards (in order to tell the difference between both male and female dwarves)

@duluoz90 no he wasn't joking, he was stating what the difference between dwarf men and women are.
The BEARDS. The dwarf women don't have them.
