you shouldnt use the "diffuser" it doesnt diffuse anything and you loose light to the sides.

When you're dealing with high contrast, shoot in RAW mode, open it up in photoshop, and increase the contrast, add blacks, then add FILL LIGHT. Play with the sliders until you get that really dramatic effect with max sharpness and clarity.
