I ordered this lip stain... and hated it. Right when I opened it I noticed that it smelled awful, like chemicals. It made me want to gag. The texture was grainy and just sat on my lips, didnt blend or anything. The gloss was better but this had this awful chemical smell.
I bought all the elf products you recomended and I just loved them all. Thanks for the honest review on this. This is what separates the real Makeup pros on Youtube I want to know the good and the bad and also that the person I am trusting to help me make purchases is not just saying all good things because they are paid to. You and Gossmakeupartist are the best pros on the tube.
I play the clarinet, and I'm looking for an inexpensive lipstain that works. If I were to only put on the color side of this lipstain, do you think it would stain my clarinet reed?
@luv4corgis probably, best bet would be to invest in a nice lip stain. i like the stila lip stains, however they are pricey..so i'd save up! (i play the clarinet too:)
there is an nyc lip stain exactly like this one but it takes a little while to dry and even though it might be sticky still you can still put on the gloss because when i did it didnt get on the brush to the clear gloss but once you leave it on for a little while it starts to feel a little lighter on your lips.. maybe its the same thing with the elf one ... ???

I picked up a few of these, they reformulated or something because they dry BUT the lipgloss side seems to break it up a little.And it was hard to get the clear gloss out onto the applicator.
erm, maybe you got a bad tube? lol i just bought it for the first time. I used it and it did dry I think. My trouble came when I tried to wash it off...omg the damn stain would not come off when I washed it off. I had to use a toothbrush to exfoliate my lips to get the color off at night. I just dont want to use a make up remover on my lips. It was a weird experience lol.
Emily, you might want to try dabbing this on with your finger. It works better that way. It still isnt quite a stain, but it's not as thick and dries.
@barrymandmisssporty Yea I definitely recommend it if you're looking for a lipstain. Its only $3 so if you don't like it it's not that big of a deal. The only thing is the color swatches on the site aren't true so maybe look up swatches online to see what color you want
Just out of curiousity? How old are you because the makeup that yoru wearing makes you look really old. Oh and just to let you know mascara should not clump on your eyelashes. Perhaps you should tkae a few lessons on how to apply mascara. You look kinda like a drag queen. I'd say you look about 40 with all your makeup on. Is that the look you're going for? Old lady? Should you really be dispensing makeup advice when you can't apply it right yourself? Just saying...

I also ordered mine in Fashionista and it looks nothing like yours! Mine is a super bright pink, even when I apply it lightly. But, I do like it and I have no problem with it drying...maybe they changed the formula.
Did you try to dab at the stain with a tissue or something to help it dry faster? If you end up trying that and it works let us know because I'm really interested in getting some of their lip stains-but like you if it doesn't work like a real stain should then I don't want it!

I bought this lip stain today. It looks like the same shade, but mine is called Heartbreaker. I hadn't read any reviews yet - I just love lipstain, so I bought it.
I didn't have the problem with it taking too long to dry. It does take a bit longer, but I'd rather it take longer and give me time to blend it rather than dry instantly and leave hard lines.
I also love how this is in a tube. I have a few lip stains that are marker form, and they're really iffy.

@customanimalart Tarte cheek stains are a really great product, and in my opinion, are unique. Are they worth $30? Perhaps. I would rather spend that money on several shades of cream blush, but if you can get a sample pack, you won't be disappointed. P.S. on her Facebook, people would respond to this kind of post much quicker.
@customanimalart And another little tip, don't ever be afraid of the color! They are incredibly sheer. I mean I have a bronzing shade that looks nearly black. And definitely! Tarte has some great combination sets (with more products besides cheek stains) out right now, as well. Check Sephora and Ulta!

Wow I really hate that covergirl lipstain. You have to put it on with soo much precision or it looks like you colored your lips with a magic marker lol!
You're right...it's not a lip"stain". It's nearly identical to Chanel's UltraWear Lip Colour in consistency and wear. e.l.f. calling this a "stain" is misleading but the colours are really nice. Like most l/s in this formula, they tend to be drying and uncomfortable to wear, atleast for me.
Did you have a problem with color application? I got first date and it seemed to migrate to the innermost part of my lips and the outer line, and wouldn't spread.
My dollar store has e.l.f no it's mainly brushes and fake eyelashes and some make-up tools and the cashier said they were gonna get some more make-up from there in .... but it makes sense ,most of e.l.f 's producs are a dollar but there prety good quailty for the most part
Great review~ I thought it went on ok but it didn't last long at all. It came right off onto my coffee cup. You're right, its not a stain. I really wanted to like it too. Colors I got were great but it also dried out my lips after my second day of wear. And yeah I got color in my gloss side too. Disapointing =(
i bought like 57 things on my only order up to now and the only things im disapointed in is the all over color stick cause they are too drying for lips and also too greasy for cheeks and the 1$ lip liner and eyeliner cause they hurt due to intensive rubbing on the skin while trying to get some color out lol
the things i like were the luscious liquid lipstick the studio line blushes and bronzers the eyebrow kit the 1$ mascara love the brow one the duo cream shadow the liquid eyeliner pen thats about what i loved the most... the things is i bought everycolor of every categorie lol because its so cheap so... and by the way i live i canada and the shipping wasnt that expensive and it came pretty fast like a week and 2 days which is not that fast but still fast lol
I agree also .. I'd like to see your thoughts on the covergirl lipstain .. I've wanted to buy one but they are kinda expensive and I always have an issue with bleeding with dark colors .. even with lip liner.
they should've just marketed it as a long wearing lip gloss instead. you did mention a few good qualities about it despite it not having lip-stain characteristics.

i had the same problem.i bought the same color,which i love,but this is my 1st time trying a lip stain,and i was dissapointed that it rubs off so easy and dosent last long.
good review...its good you showed how it came right off! that is disappointing...lol. i do find that the covergirl lipstain does the same thing too. it stains to a certain extent BUT is does come right off is you rub even lightly. not for nothing, the colour looks FAB on you!

I purchased Lucky Lady and Red Carpet from Elf. I built up the color, applying in thin layers and allowing the stain to dry between coats. Then finishing with the clear gloss and I didn't have a problem. If you apply too much stain it won't dry properly.

The only stains I have ever liked are from MARK (Avon). I got the ELF ones as well and the parabens in the ingredients turned me off to them. I'm pretty paranoid when it comes to that stuff.
you should try the l'oreal extended wear/infallible lip colors are amazing & they really do work! :) I love that Ulta consistantly does a "BOGO" on these too making them only like $4/5 each. I've done coffee, meetings/talking, lunch and still had lipcolor....the little squared packaging is like a take-along mirror, also which is just an added bonus. :)))
Covergirl has something that looks similar, not the lip stain, but a colour that dries and then the clear gloss that goes over. I find those types of products are too drying, the colour goes in the fine lines on my lips and isnt really comfortable to wear. Its unfortunate because I really like the colour.
@StyleAesthetix Hey I just think that for those real cheap brands, the quality may not be very consistent. This inconsistency has happened to other elf products as well
This product seems to be more of a lipgloss than a lipstain. I will probably still buy it since it made your lips looks so pretty. I don't mind reapplying during the day. The Cover Girl lip stains are awful IMO. Dry, flaky with little color pay off. I bought one & hate it right away but I lost the receipt so I couldn't take it back.
Emily! You should try out Lipsense products! It is a wonderful lip stain and great quality! I promise you, you will love!! Once you get the product, do a tutorial!

@lizhmajumder It's actually a look using Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips eye palette in Smokey Blue eyes. It has some light & dark blue tones in it :)

I was literally about to purchase this product tonight, under the assumption that it would work as that popsicle-effect stain. Thanks so much for posting this review! I still may purchase the product, but now I'm informed as to what I'm actually purchasing! I will definintely be purchasing the ELF blending brush and eyelash curler tonight, though. I'm having trouble getting ahold of an ELF eyeshadow brush at the Target store, and I'm reluctant to buy one online... but I'll keep trying!

@mirandaugh for just a few dollars more- check out the Cover Girl Outlast lip stains- they're like pens and give the true effect of a lip stain. They're great!
You're right Emily. A "stain" should be like the Cover Girl lip stains - they basically look like a felt tip marker. Their consistency is very light - as in to stain the lips, not gloss the lips. This ELF product is merely another lip gloss.

as for others: covergirl outlast lipstains and me are not friends :( i loved the coral-ish nude one but it dried my lips out so bad that i had something like a cold sore in the middle of my upper lip from it :(
i LOVE the Pixi stains at target! they are pricey but completely worth it. the color Youth is amazing, gives a very natural glowy pink to it and i tend to wear it under any sheer lipstick or just gloss even.
If anyone feels okay with paying $9 for a lipbalm then try out Korres's lip butters!! They smell fabulous and come in an array of colors! The butters leave your lips moisturized and if you don't want your lips to be glossy, just dab a bit rather than smear it on your lips! :D I like them! $9 for .21 oz isn't too bad! Would last me for a long time! :D

the things i like were the luscious liquid lipstick the studio line blushes and bronzers the eyebrow kit the 1$ mascara love the brow one the duo cream shadow the liquid eyeliner pen thats about what i loved the most... the things is i bought everycolor of every categorie lol because its so cheap so... and by the way i live i canada and the shipping wasnt that expensive and it came pretty fast like a week and 2 days which is not that fast but still fast lol

I agree also .. I'd like to see your thoughts on the covergirl lipstain .. I've wanted to buy one but they are kinda expensive and I always have an issue with bleeding with dark colors .. even with lip liner.

looking at the video it reminded me of of Maybelline Superstay Powergloss 12h !
even though it is the opposit result!
when you apply the color it actually dries in 2 min, leaving lips soooo matte and sticky dry!
then the gloss is the best part, it's so smooth but thick, you have the feeling of extremely moisturized lips and it lasts!
the only thing is i'm not too sure it is a product that's still on their collection..

it i as u said.. the stain is liqud color and it dries and feels sheer on the lips
and if u apply more more the color gets darker..

good review...its good you showed how it came right off! that is disappointing...lol. i do find that the covergirl lipstain does the same thing too. it stains to a certain extent BUT is does come right off is you rub even lightly. not for nothing, the colour looks FAB on you!

I purchased Lucky Lady and Red Carpet from Elf. I built up the color, applying in thin layers and allowing the stain to dry between coats. Then finishing with the clear gloss and I didn't have a problem. If you apply too much stain it won't dry properly.

The only stains I have ever liked are from MARK (Avon). I got the ELF ones as well and the parabens in the ingredients turned me off to them. I'm pretty paranoid when it comes to that stuff.

you should try the l'oreal extended wear/infallible lip colors are amazing & they really do work! :) I love that Ulta consistantly does a "BOGO" on these too making them only like $4/5 each. I've done coffee, meetings/talking, lunch and still had lipcolor....the little squared packaging is like a take-along mirror, also which is just an added bonus. :)))

Covergirl has something that looks similar, not the lip stain, but a colour that dries and then the clear gloss that goes over. I find those types of products are too drying, the colour goes in the fine lines on my lips and isnt really comfortable to wear. Its unfortunate because I really like the colour.

This product seems to be more of a lipgloss than a lipstain. I will probably still buy it since it made your lips looks so pretty. I don't mind reapplying during the day. The Cover Girl lip stains are awful IMO. Dry, flaky with little color pay off. I bought one & hate it right away but I lost the receipt so I couldn't take it back.

i think that was the concept of the lipstick to have it as it is, not as a liquid stain
when you top a liquid stain with gloss it bleeds off as well
the name was just very misleading

Yea...if it doesn't dry then it is truly not a lip stain. it is just a lips gloss...so not what i am looking for. i do love the color tho and the glossy look. i better try the Cover Girl one!

I was literally about to purchase this product tonight, under the assumption that it would work as that popsicle-effect stain. Thanks so much for posting this review! I still may purchase the product, but now I'm informed as to what I'm actually purchasing! I will definintely be purchasing the ELF blending brush and eyelash curler tonight, though. I'm having trouble getting ahold of an ELF eyeshadow brush at the Target store, and I'm reluctant to buy one online... but I'll keep trying!

You're right Emily. A "stain" should be like the Cover Girl lip stains - they basically look like a felt tip marker. Their consistency is very light - as in to stain the lips, not gloss the lips. This ELF product is merely another lip gloss.

as for others: covergirl outlast lipstains and me are not friends :( i loved the coral-ish nude one but it dried my lips out so bad that i had something like a cold sore in the middle of my upper lip from it :(
i LOVE the Pixi stains at target! they are pricey but completely worth it. the color Youth is amazing, gives a very natural glowy pink to it and i tend to wear it under any sheer lipstick or just gloss even.

If anyone feels okay with paying $9 for a lipbalm then try out Korres's lip butters!! They smell fabulous and come in an array of colors! The butters leave your lips moisturized and if you don't want your lips to be glossy, just dab a bit rather than smear it on your lips! :D I like them! $9 for .21 oz isn't too bad! Would last me for a long time! :D
