I love how, even though Masetto is the man and in operas usually he's supposed to be the great one, the one who can persuade the woman not to be angry, Zerlina has taken charge of their relationship! IT"S PURE GENIUS!
@rlane91 I wasn't commenting on the need for artistry. I was just commenting on the learning process. It definitely is not the "best" way to learn by listening to recordings rather than being intimately familiar with the score. The composer took the time to put those marks on that paper, and so that should always be the first step, rather than turning to another artist's interpretation.
Of course artistry is necessary! Of course music must be interpreted!
@rlane 91: (continuing) Of course we have to create something of the marks on the page, otherwise there is no MUSIC, just a SCORE. :) I think maybe you misunderstood my point. I wasn't saying that once you learn the score you've finished the musical process, just that the score should be the starting point.
Learning your role from another artist's interpretation/recording can create a stilted performance. No one wants to pay to see you do an impression of someone else singing Zerlina.
@rlane91 Really? I thought the best way to learn an aria was to read what the composer put on the page! As a very smart person said to me last week, MOZART took the time to write that music down on that page. The way it is "always sung" is not always the way the composer wrote it!
I LOVE this interpretation. So sweet and true to the character. I suppose my only critique would be to have the recit be just slightly slower, but that's being absolutely nit-picky. Joan Rodgers is totally awesome!
haha my friend was performing this song and had trouble with her stage presence... so i pretended to be masetto for her. turned out nice, but this is beautiful. (:

An exceptionally difficult piece of music made to sound easy. What a gem.
