I was very fortunate to grow up watching these guys on the TV and following their career durning the mid 60's when you had to be good to compete with the British Invasion. These guys were cracking into the top 10 with the rest of them and ended it with a big Number one in 1971!
I remember Where the Action Is hurried home from school to watch it. When they opened for Gerry and the Pacemakers in San Diego at Balboa Bowl my friend and II met them when we met Gerry and the Pacemakers. My very 1st concert!

@SunnBurn Very funny. Why didn't they get twisted in the chords when they spun around? I remember watching them on Where the Action is and they would play the guitar cases instead of the intruments. These guys were fun.
One of the great American bands of the 1960s. I always loved those revolutionary war outfits. Whenever they played, they looked like they were enjoying themselves.

Hissyspit - or is that Dippyshit??? - Paul Revere and the Raiders were on at 2pm on "Where the Action is" 1965-1967 - way cool. Too bad your generation sucks as bad as your generation's " music". @rockpig63 Which tells us what? That they are underrated and under appreciated? That you are ignorant and uninformed? I've heard "Kicks" all my life. And "Just Like Me" is a garage rock classic - punk rock in 1966. What exactly is your point? Obviously, you've heard of them now.
@Hissyspit Yes,and i can understand why i have never heard of them before, because they are crap.
Why do you think me not hearing of them is an assault on your delicate sencibilities. Having not heard or seen something does not make you "Ignorant and uniformed",it just means you hav'nt been exposed to that certain something.
The Raiders were one of the premiere bands that some individuals thought were a touch gimmicky. But they were EXCELLENT musicians. And Mark Lindsey is arguably the best front man, if not one of the best, during the great 60s band era.
@crlguitar1 Never missed it :) And a couple years later Mark Lindsey was one of three bachelors on The Dating Game. Sadly, the young lady did not pick him. Bet she's still telling that story.
Awesome clip! This is what I call entertainment. Glee and American Idol have nothing on this! Who cares if these guys get in the R and R HOF? That place is a joke, anyway. @PAULLONDEN That's all well and good, but it's still a bunch of garbage in my mind. I'm sure I watched the original broadcast as I was a big fan of the Smother Brothers Show. By 1967 I had pretty much decided that Paul Revere and the Raiders were not to be taken seriously. I imagine that there is some historical significance, but they are relegated to a footnote and have little relevance other than a walk down memory lane. Mark Lindsey is still touring and performing. More power to him!!!
@waltsentme1 That's Jim 'Harpo' Valley and Phil 'Fang' Volk on guitars. Drumming was Mike 'Smitty' Smith, and of course Mark Lindsay and Paul Revere. There have been different band member changes throughout the years, there is an incarnation of the Raiders still playing in Branson, I think. But this particular lineup was my favorite.
OMGOSH I forgot how cute i thought he was when i was that age LOL ummm i think he was on the cover of tean beat and the only copy i bought LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Great energy. It looks like they are having fun entertaining the audience. Too many contemporary performers seem to show disdain or indifference to their audience.
@nergvol You mean tights? I used to think tights were called leotards when I was a teensy girl. You made me smile. Gotta admit, Mark Lindsay isn't too hard on the eyes, in his leotards. True story: My Aunt Janet was a stewerdess for Delta. She was working a charter flight when Mark Lindsay boarded the plane. She said he was wearing tights, a bright Neru Jacket & ponytail. Said he smelled of perfume. Not missing a beat she said, "Pardon me Miss, can I help you find your seat?"
@EmpressOfWyoming58 Was a big fan of the band when a teen, still am. Their antics and schtick a pleasant memory froma more innocent time. Hungry for that good life baby
@EmpressOfWyoming58 Sorry to disappoint you but they're actually wearing breeches. . .as in riding breeches. Those are riding boots that equestrians favor. Yes, they ARE tight but real tights fit even snugger and would more than likely run or tear during a performance. Breeches, on the other hand, are a lot sturdier. I Not too crazy about the breeches but I love the boots.
@kilts4u2 Kits, you haven't disappointed me. I mean, the world doesn't hinge on tights or breeches. Still: evidentally you have not had much experience with the world of ballet. Do yourself a favor, go to google images. Type in men's dancer tights. Then go & look up riding breeches. I think you're going to find out that we do learn something new everyday. Dancing tights are very, very hard to ruin in performing. Just take a close look at Raider's tights after you have done your google search.
@kilts4u2 I don't need Google to know what dancer's tights are. I've worn them. Runner's tights too. And while I never danced ballet, I did participate in modern dance while in college. . 10 years before you. Back then, tights weren't as well made so it was very possible to "ladder" them. Did that too. However, further digging reveals that before breeches. .which were the "official look" of their Revolutionary costume, that tights were indeed worn in Raider early performances.
@kilts4u2 Take a look at the picture of the lp cover of Paul Revere & The Raiders Greatest Hits on Amazon. You will see one Raider barefooted and very much in a pair of white tights.
@cshargeit -mark lindsey didn't need to try to be a jagger copy. for a couple years there, they were bigger than the stones. and they were amon g the first to start making socially conscious music which while it didn't change the problems they sang about, it did bring them to the forefront of the generations disputes with government.
"The Raiders recently played in Indiana, they are a class rock act, their hall of fame time will come. That dance-kick step Phil and Jim did..still kills me!!
@moorlock2003 if PR&TR go into go in to the RnR HoF - so should joan jett, the monkees , the grassroots, kiss, pat benatar, journey, foreigner, pet shop boys, depche mode, whitney houston, heart, reo speadwagon, sammy hagar (solo), cheap trick, the knack, grand funk railroad, supertramp, kansas, boston, chicago, the carpenters, brian epstein, david cassidy, peter frampton, robin trower, ronnie montrose, eddie money, three dog night and several more, if i could think ofd them right now.
@moorlock2003 here are some more who should go in if PR&TR get into the RnR HoF - Neil Diamond, Neil Sedaka, The Guess Who, Sonny and Cher, Cher (solo) , Bad Company, Chic, Captian and Teneill, America, The Turtles, Boyce&Hart, The Three Degrees, Roxy Music, The Moody Blues, ELO, Olivia Newton-John, Badfinger, Leon Russell, Ringo Starr (solo), The Fifth Demension, Hall and Oates and the Smothers Brothers
Never missed Smothers Brothers...they were so Anti War (So was I); didnt help though; got shipped to Vietnam 1968-69...we didnt learn a damned thing there; hence afghanistan
i can not believe it awhile see this tape of Paul Revere and the Raiders with Mark Lindsay . Mark Lindsay handsome than he is still handsome now. I love all their songs they sing. I still love their music. Here is good music is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The music this kids listen to not made any scene
i can not believe it awhile see this tape of Paul Revere and the Raiders with Mark Lindsay . Mark Lindsay handsome than he is still handsome now. I love all their songs they sing. I still love their music
Watching the groups like this one while growing up is how I learned to dance. And I was considered a dmaned good dancer...even won some contests doing it. NOW...I think I'm lucky to walk without tripping over my own feet!
Ya know... I'm 22, and this is not my generations music... but these guys are the shit. Paul Revere and the Raiders are great. And so are the Smothers Brothers. Why does my generation have to suck so bad? :(
Geeze, Mark looks great in this clip! Well, he always did, but he looks even better than normal! I saw him in person 3 times- when I was 8, 14 and about 15 years ago. He's one of the most beautiful men I've ever seen.....Great band, too! :)
I just saw Mark Lindsay in the Happy Together tour. He still looks and sounds amazing! It is too bad that PP&R are not in the Hall of Fame. If they do get elected at some point, how sad would it be that Drake and Smitty are gone and will not be there to share in that happy, long-overdue moment.
That's awesome I know him valley very well, he gas been my neighbor for over 30 years, he Now travels all over the world to schools and performs his music for the kids.
@TheMustangsally75 Weinreich comes from Wienrich. It is an old first name. Today Weinreich is a given name as well as a surename. But it's very seldom that someone names his son Weinreich (or Wienrich..but you can hear this name sometimes in the Area of Berlin, Hamburg and north-western part of Germany.). The posibility to meet someone with Weinreich as given name is more seldom than meeting sb. called Weinreich as familyname I think.
sooooo that is Jim "Harpo" Valley on guitar, who replaced Drake Levin ..(Drake was a siminal player, check out earlier Raiders tunes like "Kicks" and "Good Thing") I still have my picture-sleeve singles of the first 5-6 Raiders hits, watched them every other day on "Where The Action Is"..
What a great radio song! Makes me wish today's music was as good. I think Rap "music" has almost killed the music industry today! The only genre that's really selling these days is Country, which is not my favorite music but it at least has a melody! Long live '60s Rock, Pop & Soul!
Showmanship? absolutely. Musical tightness?...well ya, its not hard when your lip synching to sound tight. I don't think they had wireless guitars in those days.
Not a knock its just how it was. I remember this show and love this clip thanks.

I enjoyed seeing Paul Revere and the Raiders in Springfield, Illinois back in the 60's. I was lucky enough to get Paul and Mark's autographs afterwards. Really nice guys. I'll always treasure memories of that night. :-)
I remember as a kid seeing them introduce this song on the ABC show "Where The Action Is' they sang it on top of a moving train. Does anybody else remember that?
Wow... I like the mix of this song. Significantly different than the one I am used to... is this version available anywhere?
As others mentioned, I have a feeling the over stylization of their image unfairly distracted from a whole bunch of fantastic tracks including this one. Their 1966-1968 output is as enjoyable as any of the critically popular bands from that period... perhaps more so in some cases.
Can someone explain why this outstanding band is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?.....oh...that's right..it's Jann Wenner's (sp?) hall of fame isn't it?
One of my favorite bands. They were always underrated. A little gimmicky, but they had great songs, great music, great vocals, and were very entertaining. That makes for a great band.
It's sounds this was a live vocal performance by Mark Lindsay, on recorded tracks. What do you think? Mark Lindsay had a great voice and was extremely hot. The Raiders had some wonderful songs.
@puzleman1 Jim Valley. Didn't really replace him though. When the Raiders became the Raiders featuring Mark Lindsay, Mark and producer Terry Melcher were using different musicians for recordings - and Drake was actually playing on those recordings.
get sirius XM radio and listen to Underground Garage! There all all kinds of new garage bands on there: The Stems, The Chesterfield Kings,The Love Me Nots, The Maggots, Thee Staibilisers, Muck and The Mires...plus lots of old garage bands too, like Paul Revere and the Raiders! It rocks!
note to ftsjr: not only were "uniforms" considered nearly mandatory, but there was a rawness that carried over from the late 50s--a sort of spunky happiness that comes from doing a whole new genre of music. That the parents didn't like it much was a great help as well! Everything was possible, new styles could be built onto the framework, everyone was experimenting (musically, that is!). It was a time of great optimism. I was a teen during the early 60s and wouldn't have missed it for the world.
great discovering new music, seriously they dont play this on classic rock radio usually the same fleet mac, eljohn steve miller, who i cant stand, tom petty please and springsteen whose appeal i never understood
great footwork phil and jim. Met the Raiders when I was 15....Mark's was my first serious kiss..lol. got to know the guys a bit over the years. paul and Smitty were real sweethearts
Linday's vocals WERE live, skidmark. Of COURSE the rest is recorded - that is the way they did it back in the 60s. Now, go back to your trailer and momma - I'll tell you when to come out.
Nice catchy rocker! Sounds like what you'd hear on an episode of Scooby Doo circa 1969.

However, further digging reveals that before breeches. .which were the "official look" of their Revolutionary costume, that tights were indeed worn in Raider early performances.
kilts4u2 4 months ago
@kilts4u2 Take a look at the picture of the lp cover of Paul Revere & The Raiders Greatest Hits on Amazon. You will see one Raider barefooted and very much in a pair of white tights.

I think I like the arrangement on this better than the version they ended up releasing.

cshargeit 1 year ago 2
@cshargeit -mark lindsey didn't need to try to be a jagger copy. for a couple years there, they were bigger than the stones. and they were amon g the first to start making socially conscious music which while it didn't change the problems they sang about, it did bring them to the forefront of the generations disputes with government.

Watching the groups like this one while growing up is how I learned to dance. And I was considered a dmaned good dancer...even won some contests doing it. NOW...I think I'm lucky to walk without tripping over my own feet!

What language is this? German maybe? My last name is WEINREICH. hOW MUCH MORE gERMAN can that be?
TheMustangsally75 1 year ago
@TheMustangsally75 Weinreich comes from Wienrich. It is an old first name. Today Weinreich is a given name as well as a surename. But it's very seldom that someone names his son Weinreich (or Wienrich..but you can hear this name sometimes in the Area of Berlin, Hamburg and north-western part of Germany.). The posibility to meet someone with Weinreich as given name is more seldom than meeting sb. called Weinreich as familyname I think.

What a great radio song! Makes me wish today's music was as good. I think Rap "music" has almost killed the music industry today! The only genre that's really selling these days is Country, which is not my favorite music but it at least has a melody! Long live '60s Rock, Pop & Soul!

@puzleman1 Jim Valley. Didn't really replace him though. When the Raiders became the Raiders featuring Mark Lindsay, Mark and producer Terry Melcher were using different musicians for recordings - and Drake was actually playing on those recordings.

note to ftsjr: not only were "uniforms" considered nearly mandatory, but there was a rawness that carried over from the late 50s--a sort of spunky happiness that comes from doing a whole new genre of music. That the parents didn't like it much was a great help as well! Everything was possible, new styles could be built onto the framework, everyone was experimenting (musically, that is!). It was a time of great optimism. I was a teen during the early 60s and wouldn't have missed it for the world.
