@leianog Even if he never said it, he showed it often enough. And show means a lot more than empty words. Even before Nog was shot he argued with Sisko over sending him. he stayed at Nog's bed and blew away the Jem Hadar. Quarks usually a coward crouched in the corner. he even agreed to run Vic's program 24/7 forever. Quarks usually greedy, but he did it for Nog. Quark tried to sabotage Nog getting in Star Fleet. He was objecting to humans & starfleet, but maybe the truth was....

Well not just that, it also shows a great scene between Odo and Quark. All the great friendships have always been one of the strongest features about Star Trek (Kirk and Spock, Data and Picard, etc.), and DS9 had some of the best in the whole franchise.
