yes, the words XIE XIE in Mandarin (Putonghua) is same meaning as thank you in English. But for Cantonese, we say "dor tse" to someone who gives you something, eg a gift. We say "hmm goi" to someone who gives a helping hand.
Thanks for the simple phrase, please keep up the daily videos. I appreciate the proper pronunciation from a real person, it really beats the CDs some times.
@Finalxgohan Thanks for your comment. I will post more videos once I have more time. The best way to learn is to hear real people talking in the language. I totally agree that CD is not as good sometime because when I tried to learn other language using CDs. It doesnt work very well.

Hi I was in Guahgzhou last month and many people said something like XIE XIE for thank you. Or is this Mandarin?

CDs are good but cdroms & videos are better.
I watch alot of HK & Mandarin Movies so its easy to distinguish
after hearing them alot, esp Japanese from chinese.
