  • I like to know "how" you "do" go about understand Freedie Gruber?!?!

  • Goddamn hippies.

  • Neil is like, "Mhm...yeah..." "What the fuck is he talking about? :|"

  • many years ago I told two aspiring drummers they should study with Freddie, and after they studied with him for a good amount of time, they both gave him the credit for putting them on a solid path to drum mastery.

  • what a load of bollocks.................

  • Yoda?

  • I'm hip. I can dig it.

  • so does this guy like...PLAY the drums?

  • It's truly disheartening to read so many negative comments about Freddie and Neil. I feel bad for the idiots that post these things. Honestly. And the drug references are not only poor attempts at trying to sound clever, but are also a way for the intellectually and artistically impaired to sidestep having to think too deeply about anything. A true student of the instrument CAN make sense of Freddies ideas. To some drummers, drumming IS art; science; philosophy; and religion combined.

  • LSD is one hell of a drug.

  • The thing is, even though Neil was just "doing" what he does, it was still perfect as a listener and player of drums. Can I notice a difference in Neil's playing in the past 10 years or so after re-programming his drumming technique? I can not! But he can, and its his drums and his life so he should be able to do what he wants, even if he really doesn't need to, he does it for himself, and the art of drumming. You never really stop learning anything if you want, you can always keep learning.

  • The only difference i can pick up on in Neil's playing is how relaxed he is now. Before you could tell he was putting all his effort into his hits and fills and everything, now he looks like theres nothing to it lol. Thats my take anyways.

  • He's a Buddhist.

  • R.I.P Freddie Gruber we love you <3

  • A MASTER TEACHING A MASTER AWSOME

  • R.I.P Freddie Gruber

  • and all these great drummers go to study with him and then going around talking about how they weren't playing shit for all these years and now after a few lessons with Gruber they've been reborn. I think he's more like a religious cult leader than a drum teacher

  • Even Justin Bieber speaks more coherently about drums, and he's just a girl

  • Stoned again, huh Freddie.

  • Huh........I didn't know Kevin Spacey played drums.

  • I understand only 5% of that conversation.

  • r i p musician...........

  • We will miss you deeply Freddie.

  • I can't believe he's bewitched by this mish mosh of pure drivel, what others see as 'common sense.' I think he is just awed that he was Buddy's roommate and is being blinded and driven by pure assoc., something he ironically abhors in fans of his own music!

I know u went thru agony with the loss of your family, but you've given into this drumming spiritual nonsense that u've redirected to help soothe a wound. Please Neil, stop letting this guide your genius. pretty please with sugar on top?

  • @22JimmyK22

The point freddie is trying to make is: There is always room for improvement. He's just showing drummers there are other ways of playing other than their own, this is obvious and any drummer who doesn't notice this is a complete idiot, but some people are, and he's simply trying to SHOW said idiots this apparent revelation

  • you are always where you are unless you are freddie gruber

  • neil, don't "agree" on all that as if you're both there together. just get to work and cultivate your groove, man. you still have a lot ahead of you

    and stuff.

  • which brings me to my next point....DONT SMOKE CRACK.

  • What just happened?

  • I agree, if you get ahead of yourself you just get discouraged

  • Just smile and nod Neil.......

  • Fred, shut the fuck up & PLAY THE DRUMMMSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Do or do not... there is no try.

  • does freddie actually play drums? or does he only like to sit behind them to offer metaphysical conundrums?

  • Wow....... I fucking see it too, man. Like fucking wow. Hey pass me that pipe again.

  • ....ohhh...now i get it

  • Is it Freddie? Is it? :)

  • Freddie's approach to the drums is like exactly my approach to playing my bass.

It's a lot more than 4 strings and a piece of wood.

  • I love how Neil Peart is just sitting there like... "Mhmm, mhmm, yeah... hurhur... mhmm". Must be thinking, "What the fuck is going on?!"

  • @DaveyDooM92 No I think he does know what Freddie Gruber is saying. Its really simple really, you have to become one with the instrument and know what it makes it. To flow and express your emotions just like you would when you talk and write. When you do those things, you are not constraint to time. But in music you're to be on the beat, however you can always get there differently and not just be on a pogo stick. Like Freddie says, pop music today is very vertical like a pogo stick.

  • Where are you?

  • I would love to understand what the fuck he was talking about.

  • @TheMrilson - LLLLOOOOOLLLLL!!!

  • @TheMrilson So does neil.

  • blew my mind man

  • this is how Tommy Lee will look when he's 78 !!

  • How come I can't find any videos with Freddie Gruber actually playing?

  • @harrycrowe3 That's because he never really did much gigging, but is a renowned drum TEACHER.

  • It kills me to hear all of these negative comments about Freddie!! When Weckl,Vinnie,Steve Smith and Neil all say he DRASTICALLY improved their drumming!! And I am pretty sure that no one leaving these comments,is anywhere near the level of Weckl or Steve Smith,so what is this negativity based on??...Cause it sure aint based on RESULTS!!!!!

  • Peart is smart enough to know what he is saying, but should he care? I wonder if we wiggle Grubers arm like that if it will break so he will shut the fuck up!

  • I'm not sure Neil needs to kiss that much ass...

  • neil peart == tom hanks on philadelphia

    THUMBS UP NOW

  • Talking about living in a moment... Where are you, if you're not where you're at? Freddie is a vise man, and he knows what he's talking about.

  • Neil @ :34 ..."WTF...ROFLCOPTER!"

  • Only... And I mean Only Neil Peart is smart enough to understand what this guy is saying!

  • Wow. That was so deep. Deep like a great big load of dung.

  • @bmckenzie69

    your ignorance is appaling.

  • Fred "looks like" a New York jew. I do not like New Yorkers. Also, what is that necklace around him? It looks like a free masonery symbol.

  • this is either very profound or very idiotic

  • Neil must be thinking what the hell at around 0:34

  • Well...say what you want about this guy, it was a way to improve Neil Peart's drum performance to where he was satisfied with it. The other players Lifeson and Geddy Lee noticed a bit of a change and it worked for the better since they're a bit tighter. I trust that Neil knows what he's doing. He's been using this guy's drum technique for the past 16 years so this isn't news.

  • That conversation was not a discussion of their approaches to drumming. They were incredibly high on LSD in this video.

  • Neil should have studied with Joe Morello. This freddy guy is an intellectual half-wit.

  • Neil is just like:

Uh huh, yeah, sure, uh huh, yeah I know what you mean, yup

  • Pseudointellectual garbage. Is there any footage of Gruber, you know, actually playing drums instead of sitting around philosophizing like an idiot?

  • Freddie Gruber ruined Neil Peart.

  • I have no idea why all these pro drummers flocked to Freddie Gruber to study with a "technical master" and not Joe Morello. Freddie couldn't even play and his only claim to fame was following Buddy Rich around like a lost puppy. Joe taught about all of these techical things and not only talked about it, but could also do it. Just listen to any one of his 120 recordings. Ever hear any drummer talking about some amazing Freddie Gruber recording you just had to hear? Yeah, me either.

  • @MrDrummerboy79 Me neither? Meeeeow!

  • @MrDrummerboy79

It's not about the application of an idea but the thought behind it. No Freddie doesn't have any quintessential jazz records, but that doesn't diminish his teachings. Maybe Neil or any other "pro" drummer is more technically proficient; but that doesn't mean Freddie doesn't have something to offer him. Neil changed his whole style of playing from Gruber's teachings. And to say Gruber never played is absurd; why would people have studied with him.

  • @MrDrummerboy79 Interesting point of view Mr. Drummerboy

  • Where are you if you're not where you're at? That's some heavy stuff.

  • I get it.

  • @weallcollapse so do I

  • what the fuck was that old bastard talking about...

  • This is painful to watch.

  • "Yes but it depends on what the meaning of 'IS' is"

    Bill Clinton

  • Wow, thats some spaced out shit. I prefer more practical drumntips than "feeling the spirit within finding and finding love deep inside my heart".

  • Has anyone actually seen Freddie actually PLAY the drums?? Anyone notice that there are NO YouTube videos of him playing any drums anywhere, just his New Age philosophical ramblings and his huge 80s shades. Can he actually PLAY the drums??

  • @Lipshammusicrecords He's a great teacher (if Neil chose him), but you're 100% right. It's said he's a great jazz player from way back, but no proof exists. He's like the therapist from The Kings Speech: All talk & great ideas, but no credentials to back it all up.

  • Anybody who writes negatively about people who don't like this vid are to wrapped up in bullshit. I mean, it's drums, you play. You have a good time and go on. WTF.

  • All of those who commented negatively on freddie's approach are one and the same; no originality ! Freddie is simply too far ahead for most of you head bangers. The truly great drummers : Steve Smith, Weckl , Peart etc who have studied with him must know something about the art of drumming that you poor clowns will simply never know. Good Luck, you'll all need it ! Happy smashing

  • @bowlofsuf Well said

  • This is a spoof right, like spinal tape. "Its called an approach." Do I take it that Neil Peart played for 30 years without an approach. Maybe so. You can't argue with the folks Freddie's taught. Its a style thing with me. Freddie always seems to me to be caught up in this self important, everything I say is profound (which its not), wrapped in some schmaltz delivery which is kind of a turn off to me. BTW Where am I - it does beg the question- I'm here watching this ridiculous video.

  • @dschwa77 you play guitar right, you're a jerk.

  • words to play by

  • Sounds like generic hippie psychobabble to me. OMGZ WAT A MASTER!!!11

  • "Don't get ahead of yourself!" Good advice for anything.

  • Wonderful. More psycho-babble from a self-purported drum guru. Give me a break. It's amazing how people with the gift of mumbo-jumbo and bullsh*t can be looked up to as experts.

  • all im gonna say is, anyone who doesnt like this video is very close minded

  • WHY... would 147,672 people watch this dribble? (as one who loves great drummers)

  • o.O wtf? Philosophy + Drums?

  • That guy is the coolest person I've seen

  • Judge Judy is Freddie Grubers younger sister

  • This video is so funny I laugh like fuck whenever I watch it.

  • I think they get high together.

  • Is it? Actually?

  • Am I the only one that gets reminded of Star Wars by these 2 guys? It's like Yoda explaining something to Obi Wan. =D

  • Freddie is an amazing human being and drum teacher. He has had as grand an impact on my playing and as a human being. I'm a man of many hair cuts, and Freddie's helped me ware them all. Johnny "Vatos" Hernandez

  • THERE ARE NO VIDEO OF FREDDIE GRUBER ACTUALLY PLAYING DRUMS

  • Gruber is for pros, not ams.

  • Cocaine's a hell of a drug

  • i didn't neil peart was that bald... O_O

  • @WhyIAm7 He's not as bald anymore. If I had that kind of money, I'd do the same.

  • neil is like wow..lets see this guy siy in my seat

  • Freddy single handedly ruined my favorite players! Neil no longer uses two kicks, lost two toms and moved the damn ride over like a 4 piece!!! LAME! Dave Weckel, well watch the old vids from the 80's and his grip was brutal and he was awesome, then Freddy comes along and blamo, never the same!

  • @arthurkitchen Neil dropped the second kick long before he met Freddy and as great as Dave was back then, he's WAY better now........although I'm not sure how much of that has to do with Gruber either.

  • hahahahaha wow lol 0:29 is hilarious

  • "If you're not where you're at , where are you?"

I dunno...not where I'm at. Or somewhere else I'm not.

  • Yoda!

  • All you doubters... ever heard the motherfucker DRUM????

    You should...

  • @Bass5el So much is said about Freddie Gruber. All the "Cats" go to him.

I've searched a LOT and I've NEVER seen him even demonstrate anything on a practice pad much less play on a drum set. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.... I'm BEGGING you to direct me to a video of Freddie Gruber playing the drum set.

  • @DrumTchr I have heard from my Drum shop that Freddy was asked to do a DVD and said yes and then at the last minuet he got upset and backs out and says No. I hear he is very personal and very leary of people ripping him off maybe...

I also hear he is a bit of a "J" cat. But I too wish I could see him play some technique. I like what he was doing with that drum stick. Thats a magic trick.

  • Okay, Gruber, where's the pot?

  • ya know considering how high this guy is on some serious shit he is ceeping his composure really well

  • the 5 year old rubber pencil trick very smart yoda. hahahha

  • 0:33 LSD trip

  • The Yoda of drums speaks in tongues

  • Yoda + LSD + Drums = Freddie Gruber

  • i knew your comments were gonna be funny...thanks for makin me laugh... be present

  • man this has inspired me to roll out a nice fat doobie! i think you need to be stoned to get what he's going on about

  • what he say???? lol!

  • this is heavy

  • Its transcendental. In other words, true art doesn't fit into this constant capitalistic production/consumption logic we're all sooo incurably and deeply used to. They're antipodes by their very nature.

  • He sounds like Yogi Berra

  • I'm getting very frustrated at how he never really says anything while saying quite alot. I WANT TO UNDERSTAND HIM!!

  • Neil might of seeked Freedie's advice on drum approach, but all the advice doesn't fitt in well with Rush's sound . Freddie is a jazz player ,Neil has a power attack approach on the drums ,naturally because he plays in a hard progressive rock band . And in the past ten years till now i haven't seen Neil adapt Freddies drum technics on the concert stage .. .. I dont know maybe it's me..... i don't get the whole thing .... straight over my head

  • @GiovaniB52 well like Freddie said, the motion of your hands can be just as important as the impact on the drum. you can't be tight when you play the drums, your movements have to be fluid. it doesn't matter what type of music you play, this can still be applied. hoped that answered your question

  • "if youre not where youre at, then where are you?" *gong resounds in the background*

  • I don't think I honestly understood one word of this video. XD

It was all like... 'Be where your at when your at where you are if your not who you are and where your at where are you.' I was like "Say what..!?" lolol

  • LSD is a hell of a drug...

  • " Be where your at, because if you're not where you're at, it begs to question, and one would want to ask, where are you?" :57

I said that same thing in 1976 during my most intense LSD trip ever!

... that's freakin me out man!

  • neil peart's hair is actually like the iron man helmet :P

  • wha oh, comment pending approval.... butthurt!!!

  • poor neil.... he thinks everyone's better than him..... first with burning for buddy, now with this old whacko scruff bucket....

  • freddie gruber is a hack....

  • i love it, it's like wise words from your grampa but there drummers.

  • basically what he's saying is don't skimp on technique and basic musicianship because if your hands, feet, time and reading ability are all top tier, then you are only thinking about the music, nothing else. If a musician is challenged by a song technically or musically then detracts from their ability to put their full undivided attention to making the song sound good. technique w/ economy of motion, just like water or a wave. Some real bruce lee shit. It applies to anything athletic.

  • what they don't show you-the secret acid stash

  • Is it safe to say Freddie explains in the abstract??

  • Acid is a powerful thing ;D

  • I'm confused

  • What just happened?

  • It's funny considerating that he "humble guy" in this case is in fact one of the greatest rock drummers in history xD Neil is just so... human

  • "Where are you if your not where your at?"

    Love it!

  • what the hell is he talking about

  • is that an akg 414 on the tom?O_O"

  • wow, that was pretentious.

  • @Blackmark456 well who is being more pretensious; an old man that has been around for quite some time and has taught the greatest drummers through this method or someone who calls this old man who, I guess, would have be someone with some sort of title in order for you to feel comfortable with what he's saying?

  • it was like the campfire scene in the movie easy rider.

  • @RJiminez51 at least it's not like the campfire scene from Blazing Saddles.

  • is this real? rofl

  • I love how even Neil isn't above formal instruction !!

  • check out my bands interview with Freddie Gruber- Freddie is a master of life-

  • i think np realized this was a bunch of mental masturbating bs when he went back to matched.

  • Looks like he went over a drumming stage, now he's sharing his expierences and thoughts with his folowers, yoda, exackly :D

  • hahaha,nomatter where you go,their you are!hahaha

  • thest guys just smoked a joint and started talking lol

  • he actually looks like a perfect hybrid of Tom Hanks and Kevin Spacey

  • @awdpth Spot on!! XD

  • @awdpth No kidding - he even *sounds* like a hybrid of hanks and spacey!

  • @rendem11 I was thinking the exact same thing! I wonder if Tom Hanks and Kevin Spacey had a kid if he could play like Neil Peart...

  • I said something similar, I said he looks like a twin brother to Tom Hanks

  • neil peart is my hero not only as a drummer, but as a person. If you can go through the hell hes been through and not kill yourself, then you got balls.

  • @ruffles272 AMEN to that!

  • This blew my mind.

  • @usernameisalex

    mine too

  • Freddie also gave instruction to Dave Weckl among many other greats.

  • Where Y'at, Bubba?

  • Kowtow before the Sensei, the professor, Neil Peart. Instead of attacking the way he looks, which feeble and simple minds do rather than aim for his drumming. Oh, what. That's right. You can't! You must of heard Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves and countless other albums. Plus he writes most of his band's lyrics. He is Hemingway, Ayn Rand. Attack his drumming abilities, not his similarity to another actor or musician. Go home and listen to your Nickleback, Daughtry albums!!!...

  • Neil looks like a brother of Phil Collins, both wicked drummers.

  • @mk4life1 HAHA phil collins, wicked drummer? Is that a joke?

  • @willdrummer88

Do your research kid , Phil is legendary. Like him or not.
