many years ago I told two aspiring drummers they should study with Freddie, and after they studied with him for a good amount of time, they both gave him the credit for putting them on a solid path to drum mastery.
It's truly disheartening to read so many negative comments about Freddie and Neil. I feel bad for the idiots that post these things. Honestly. And the drug references are not only poor attempts at trying to sound clever, but are also a way for the intellectually and artistically impaired to sidestep having to think too deeply about anything. A true student of the instrument CAN make sense of Freddies ideas. To some drummers, drumming IS art; science; philosophy; and religion combined.
The thing is, even though Neil was just "doing" what he does, it was still perfect as a listener and player of drums. Can I notice a difference in Neil's playing in the past 10 years or so after re-programming his drumming technique? I can not! But he can, and its his drums and his life so he should be able to do what he wants, even if he really doesn't need to, he does it for himself, and the art of drumming. You never really stop learning anything if you want, you can always keep learning.
The only difference i can pick up on in Neil's playing is how relaxed he is now. Before you could tell he was putting all his effort into his hits and fills and everything, now he looks like theres nothing to it lol. Thats my take anyways.
and all these great drummers go to study with him and then going around talking about how they weren't playing shit for all these years and now after a few lessons with Gruber they've been reborn. I think he's more like a religious cult leader than a drum teacher
I can't believe he's bewitched by this mish mosh of pure drivel, what others see as 'common sense.' I think he is just awed that he was Buddy's roommate and is being blinded and driven by pure assoc., something he ironically abhors in fans of his own music!
I know u went thru agony with the loss of your family, but you've given into this drumming spiritual nonsense that u've redirected to help soothe a wound. Please Neil, stop letting this guide your genius. pretty please with sugar on top?
The point freddie is trying to make is: There is always room for improvement. He's just showing drummers there are other ways of playing other than their own, this is obvious and any drummer who doesn't notice this is a complete idiot, but some people are, and he's simply trying to SHOW said idiots this apparent revelation
@DaveyDooM92 No I think he does know what Freddie Gruber is saying. Its really simple really, you have to become one with the instrument and know what it makes it. To flow and express your emotions just like you would when you talk and write. When you do those things, you are not constraint to time. But in music you're to be on the beat, however you can always get there differently and not just be on a pogo stick. Like Freddie says, pop music today is very vertical like a pogo stick.
It kills me to hear all of these negative comments about Freddie!! When Weckl,Vinnie,Steve Smith and Neil all say he DRASTICALLY improved their drumming!! And I am pretty sure that no one leaving these comments,is anywhere near the level of Weckl or Steve Smith,so what is this negativity based on??...Cause it sure aint based on RESULTS!!!!!
Peart is smart enough to know what he is saying, but should he care? I wonder if we wiggle Grubers arm like that if it will break so he will shut the fuck up!
Well...say what you want about this guy, it was a way to improve Neil Peart's drum performance to where he was satisfied with it. The other players Lifeson and Geddy Lee noticed a bit of a change and it worked for the better since they're a bit tighter. I trust that Neil knows what he's doing. He's been using this guy's drum technique for the past 16 years so this isn't news.
I have no idea why all these pro drummers flocked to Freddie Gruber to study with a "technical master" and not Joe Morello. Freddie couldn't even play and his only claim to fame was following Buddy Rich around like a lost puppy. Joe taught about all of these techical things and not only talked about it, but could also do it. Just listen to any one of his 120 recordings. Ever hear any drummer talking about some amazing Freddie Gruber recording you just had to hear? Yeah, me either.
It's not about the application of an idea but the thought behind it. No Freddie doesn't have any quintessential jazz records, but that doesn't diminish his teachings. Maybe Neil or any other "pro" drummer is more technically proficient; but that doesn't mean Freddie doesn't have something to offer him. Neil changed his whole style of playing from Gruber's teachings. And to say Gruber never played is absurd; why would people have studied with him.
Has anyone actually seen Freddie actually PLAY the drums?? Anyone notice that there are NO YouTube videos of him playing any drums anywhere, just his New Age philosophical ramblings and his huge 80s shades. Can he actually PLAY the drums??
@Lipshammusicrecords He's a great teacher (if Neil chose him), but you're 100% right. It's said he's a great jazz player from way back, but no proof exists. He's like the therapist from The Kings Speech: All talk & great ideas, but no credentials to back it all up.
Anybody who writes negatively about people who don't like this vid are to wrapped up in bullshit. I mean, it's drums, you play. You have a good time and go on. WTF.
All of those who commented negatively on freddie's approach are one and the same; no originality ! Freddie is simply too far ahead for most of you head bangers. The truly great drummers : Steve Smith, Weckl , Peart etc who have studied with him must know something about the art of drumming that you poor clowns will simply never know. Good Luck, you'll all need it ! Happy smashing
This is a spoof right, like spinal tape. "Its called an approach." Do I take it that Neil Peart played for 30 years without an approach. Maybe so. You can't argue with the folks Freddie's taught. Its a style thing with me. Freddie always seems to me to be caught up in this self important, everything I say is profound (which its not), wrapped in some schmaltz delivery which is kind of a turn off to me. BTW Where am I - it does beg the question- I'm here watching this ridiculous video.
Wonderful. More psycho-babble from a self-purported drum guru. Give me a break. It's amazing how people with the gift of mumbo-jumbo and bullsh*t can be looked up to as experts.
Freddie is an amazing human being and drum teacher. He has had as grand an impact on my playing and as a human being. I'm a man of many hair cuts, and Freddie's helped me ware them all. Johnny "Vatos" Hernandez
Freddy single handedly ruined my favorite players! Neil no longer uses two kicks, lost two toms and moved the damn ride over like a 4 piece!!! LAME! Dave Weckel, well watch the old vids from the 80's and his grip was brutal and he was awesome, then Freddy comes along and blamo, never the same!
@arthurkitchen Neil dropped the second kick long before he met Freddy and as great as Dave was back then, he's WAY better now........although I'm not sure how much of that has to do with Gruber either.
@Bass5el So much is said about Freddie Gruber. All the "Cats" go to him.
I've searched a LOT and I've NEVER seen him even demonstrate anything on a practice pad much less play on a drum set. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.... I'm BEGGING you to direct me to a video of Freddie Gruber playing the drum set.
@DrumTchr I have heard from my Drum shop that Freddy was asked to do a DVD and said yes and then at the last minuet he got upset and backs out and says No. I hear he is very personal and very leary of people ripping him off maybe...
I also hear he is a bit of a "J" cat. But I too wish I could see him play some technique. I like what he was doing with that drum stick. Thats a magic trick.
Its transcendental. In other words, true art doesn't fit into this constant capitalistic production/consumption logic we're all sooo incurably and deeply used to. They're antipodes by their very nature.
Neil might of seeked Freedie's advice on drum approach, but all the advice doesn't fitt in well with Rush's sound . Freddie is a jazz player ,Neil has a power attack approach on the drums ,naturally because he plays in a hard progressive rock band . And in the past ten years till now i haven't seen Neil adapt Freddies drum technics on the concert stage .. .. I dont know maybe it's me..... i don't get the whole thing .... straight over my head
@GiovaniB52 well like Freddie said, the motion of your hands can be just as important as the impact on the drum. you can't be tight when you play the drums, your movements have to be fluid. it doesn't matter what type of music you play, this can still be applied. hoped that answered your question
I don't think I honestly understood one word of this video. XD
It was all like... 'Be where your at when your at where you are if your not who you are and where your at where are you.' I was like "Say what..!?" lolol
basically what he's saying is don't skimp on technique and basic musicianship because if your hands, feet, time and reading ability are all top tier, then you are only thinking about the music, nothing else. If a musician is challenged by a song technically or musically then detracts from their ability to put their full undivided attention to making the song sound good. technique w/ economy of motion, just like water or a wave. Some real bruce lee shit. It applies to anything athletic.
@Blackmark456 well who is being more pretensious; an old man that has been around for quite some time and has taught the greatest drummers through this method or someone who calls this old man who, I guess, would have be someone with some sort of title in order for you to feel comfortable with what he's saying?
neil peart is my hero not only as a drummer, but as a person. If you can go through the hell hes been through and not kill yourself, then you got balls.
Kowtow before the Sensei, the professor, Neil Peart. Instead of attacking the way he looks, which feeble and simple minds do rather than aim for his drumming. Oh, what. That's right. You can't! You must of heard Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves and countless other albums. Plus he writes most of his band's lyrics. He is Hemingway, Ayn Rand. Attack his drumming abilities, not his similarity to another actor or musician. Go home and listen to your Nickleback, Daughtry albums!!!...
I like to know "how" you "do" go about understand Freedie Gruber?!?!

If a musician is challenged by a song technically or musically then detracts from their ability to put their full undivided attention to making the song sound good. technique w/ economy of motion, just like water or a wave. Some real bruce lee shit. It applies to anything athletic.

Blackmark456 1 year ago
@Blackmark456 well who is being more pretensious; an old man that has been around for quite some time and has taught the greatest drummers through this method or someone who calls this old man who, I guess, would have be someone with some sort of title in order for you to feel comfortable with what he's saying?

@rendem11 I was thinking the exact same thing! I wonder if Tom Hanks and Kevin Spacey had a kid if he could play like Neil Peart...
ryuradeon 1 year ago
I said something similar, I said he looks like a twin brother to Tom Hanks
rdanders9466 1 year ago
neil peart is my hero not only as a drummer, but as a person.
