Just a bit more...how much damage has been done to non- or new believers by Christians who have deemed the outside of a person not quite ready to have their insides dealt with? Disapproving glances at that "too short" skirt, too baggy pant, etc. We have missed opportunities to minister and win souls because of our fixation on dress judgment. Introduce to Christ, have the Spirit indwell and then the conviction of "modesty" will follow. We sometimes do it backward.
Jesus tells us about this world and its "shining things" over and over. Mark 4.19; Luke 8.14; Luke 12.16;
Mark 10.7-30, esp. vs 17. This may be a lot to ingest but it makes my point. I agree to some point of the outward appearance however, being modest in life also keeps us out of debt. This way we can help one another when we see the need, when we know the need and when we are asked. Can you help anyone including yourself if you owe for your outward appearance?
Sistahbright, we are in agreement. The discerning/difference comes in defining "appropriate." Churches and denominations vary on this distinction. Make-up on women, dreds on men, length of hem or sleeves, pants in church. It comes down to the culture of the church and the individual's conviction, because scripture does not spell it out. If it did, dress wouldn't be yet another divisive element among Christians.
patchchat, modest apparel does not mean prison of fashion. Plunging necklines, baggypants seeing underwear, sneakers (male&feamle) untied flopping along, hair(dreds are not an issue) unkept, short shirts, tight jeans and I could go on. one earring then two then three. Takes away from serving the Lord. Jesus said "follow me"
Dressing appropriately is important in or out of the church building. Do we want to really dress and look like individuals from magazines, television, videos whose bottom line is selling sex? No, so singing songs unto our Lord and living life everyday we should dress in modest apparel.
There really isn't any energy in that song like how Kurt Carr or others had it. My church even had it right on. It's much more of a choir or congregation oriented song.
What is immodest for one is not necessarily the same for others. Pentacostals focus quite a bit of legalistic energy on dress. So they would perhaps notice dress first before message or have message blocked by dress. If my choir was singing before a more legalistic congregation, we would be sensitive to that and dress accordingly. We'd want the message to go forth and not be blocked by anything.
I'm also a member in a gospel choir and I think the most important thing is in the view of gospels, that you are convinced what you sing and that you live it. To judge people, because of what they wearing is really poor.

They sure sound like they know what they are singing about, don't they...Attire is a relative thing...a devil in a white robe is still a devil....the energy in this song is that it was performed with 6 singers and 1 keyboardist..piano, distinct harmony and clear voices. No. Can our need for "the latest and greatest" block a blessing or limit the blessing we can be? Surely. Our focus only differs when YOU speak of how CHRISTIANS should dress and I speak of how focusing on dress can SOMETIMES stop OUR rich and fruit-bearing interaction with non-Christians.

And lastly for tonight. Churches are made up of sick people. That is why we go to church to get healing. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Follow Him, see Him and you'll be able to fellowship in church in harmony because you will not look at the "outward" appearance but the soul of others as our savior does.

Just a bit more...how much damage has been done to non- or new believers by Christians who have deemed the outside of a person not quite ready to have their insides dealt with? Disapproving glances at that "too short" skirt, too baggy pant, etc. We have missed opportunities to minister and win souls because of our fixation on dress judgment. Introduce to Christ, have the Spirit indwell and then the conviction of "modesty" will follow. We sometimes do it backward.

Jesus tells us about this world and its "shining things" over and over. Mark 4.19; Luke 8.14; Luke 12.16;
Mark 10.7-30, esp. vs 17. This may be a lot to ingest but it makes my point. I agree to some point of the outward appearance however, being modest in life also keeps us out of debt. This way we can help one another when we see the need, when we know the need and when we are asked. Can you help anyone including yourself if you owe for your outward appearance?

Sistahbright, we are in agreement. The discerning/difference comes in defining "appropriate." Churches and denominations vary on this distinction. Make-up on women, dreds on men, length of hem or sleeves, pants in church. It comes down to the culture of the church and the individual's conviction, because scripture does not spell it out. If it did, dress wouldn't be yet another divisive element among Christians.

Plunging necklines, baggypants seeing underwear, sneakers (male&feamle) untied flopping along, hair(dreds are not an issue) unkept, short shirts, tight jeans and I could go on. one earring then two then three. Takes away from serving the Lord. Jesus said "follow me"

Dressing appropriately is important in or out of the church building. Do we want to really dress and look like individuals from magazines, television, videos whose bottom line is selling sex? No, so singing songs unto our Lord and living life everyday we should dress in modest apparel.

There really isn't any energy in that song like how Kurt Carr or others had it. My church even had it right on. It's much more of a choir or congregation oriented song.

What is immodest for one is not necessarily the same for others. Pentacostals focus quite a bit of legalistic energy on dress. So they would perhaps notice dress first before message or have message blocked by dress. If my choir was singing before a more legalistic congregation, we would be sensitive to that and dress accordingly. We'd want the message to go forth and not be blocked by anything.

I'm also a member in a gospel choir and I think the most important thing is in the view of gospels, that you are convinced what you sing and that you live it. To judge people, because of what they wearing is really poor.
I have to say to the people, who support this kind of view:

Are you Pentecostal? I am. Does your church have a dress code? I understand where you are coming from. It's not about judging. Its about being a distraction and drawing undo attention to ourselves. If anything about a person's appearance is an obvious distraction from the service they should reconsider wearing it.
