Nice food plant that I would like to try and grow, BUT I live in Taiwan, so does anyone know what Jerusalem Artichokes aka Sunchokes are in Mandarin/Traditional Chinese (characters or Pinyin or both)? and if I can grow them here (am in Taipei where Winter temperature low down to around 10 degrees C - tropical in Summer, 30s.
I am going tomorrow to find some azomite. Thanks for all your tips. They have inspired me. I"m excited to pass on what I've learned to my Plant Power students I'm teaching this spring.
John, you mention it tasted like Jicama or a chestnut. Once, I went to eat at someone's house. They gave me something like french fries but it was Jicama. They were absolutely delicious. So do you think I could fry them? I know you are a raw food person but I'm just thinking of ways to get my family to eat it. BTW, since you were out of these, I ordered thru HenryFields that had them at $14.99 but of course not in your special soil.
Yes, You can fry them, that being said, Microwaving and Frying foods, in my opinion are the worst way (create the most toxins) to cook foods. and I am not out of stock. Im glad you will be growing them.
You may be able to find sunchokes for less than the price I am selling them. Keep in mind it includes soil which adds weight to the package.. the price INCLUDES shipping, which can get expensive. It also includes soil which adds weight to the package. In addition, when you purchase the sunchokes from me, you directly support me, a home grower who is taking the time to educate people about growing food. Plus my sunchokes are grown in the best soil ever.
Hi. I live near you in Northern California. I tried Jerusalem Artichokes in a pot last year and didn't get nearly as many as you did! Great job. What kind of soil did you use in the pot? Also when did you plant them? How much light do they need?
About the invasiveness of sunchokes (AKA Jerusaalem artickoke)-- Gophers just LOVE the tubers, so if you have that particular pest, you won't have a problem with the sunchokes spreading too far. I plant some in gopher baskets, the rest I leave to the gophers if there are too many for me to eat or give away.
I asked John how many tubers did he plant per pot but he may be too busy or can't answer everyone's questions. Does anyone know how many tubers should be planted per pot to yield what John obtained per pot ?
Nothing more annoying than hearing some dog yapping in the background. I’m sure this may have been a great video, but I skipped through most of it because of the annoyance.
While I still have some left... Response has been overwhelming. and am selling out quickly.. I do cover in the video, how to store them and plant them when you soil is workable (no longer frosted).
Disregard my other comment below! Just double checked and sure enough you had some in stock! So I just placed an order! Can't wait to get them and well I have to wait to plant them but I already have a great spot picked out to plant them. Quick question can I plant them before the last frost date? When is the best time to plant them? I live in MD which is zone 7. Thanks!
I watched this video using my Iphone youtube app and tried to purchase some of your sunchokes using my FB app but wasn't able to. Once I got home I logged in but it was too late, you were out of stock!! Is there any chance you'll have more soon available for purchase? I seriously wanted to get some of these! Let me know. Thanks! As always, love your videos!
These grow wild in northern Ga, and North Carolina. My grandma used to go out and find these on the side of the road, and then brush them off and eat them on the spot. They kind of look like a sunflower.
Thank you so much for your enthusiasm about your work. You have renewed my interest in the garden. I just ordered some of your artichokes, and kale. Very excited about getting started again this spring.
Do they bitter? I planted Arugula and found out they are pepper and bitter tasting. I eat just 4 seedlings a day since my family will NOT eat them. You say these are delicious. Are they similar to a green bean?
I have never had "bitter" sunchokes. Arugula can get "spicy", but I would not call it bitter. These are not similiar to a green bean. They are more similiar to water chestnut and Jicama.
Hi John: I do not have a facebook account. I would like to get some Artichoke and Scarlett Runner Beans seeds. How can I order them without getting a facebook account? Thanks and keep up the good work. I watch all your video on youtube.
I love these and have not been successful growing them in S. Calif. I read somewhere that they prefer latitudes further north. But, I'm sure willing to try them again. Maybe gophers got them last time.... lol... I can only hope. I've bought these at the store and they are a nice change. I sliced them up into a salad; but the guacamole sounds even better.
Hey John. Thanks so much for all your work/contribution. I want to eat as well as plant some of the sunchoke that I'm going to order from you. What month do you recommend planting and what tiem of the year would they start sprouting into more sunchokes? thanks again, Dan
They should be planted as early as your soil is workable. I explain in the video that if you are not planting them, they should be stored, as I outline in the video, until your soil is workable, and the last frost date has passed. They will grow all season (spring/summer/fall). When the stalks dry out and the plant is no longer alive, you can carefully dig up the tubers.
Thanks for the information on ordering direct. I just placed my order and can't wait to get the chokes. I will start them in pots in my sun room. The last 3 winters I have grown plants in my sun room by placing them on a wrought iron table and covering it with a large plastic sheet. Then I place an oil heater under the table and set it to 50 degrees. I also have 3 tree collards which I will put outside in the spring. Thanks again John. Sue T
John, I really wanted to buy some of your sun chokes, but I don't have a Facebook account and I really don't want one. I'll have to find somewhere else to purchase them. I like the idea of growing them in a pot and can't wait to get some. Thanks for all your videos, I've learned a lot from you. Sue T
"they say" Hardy from USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3 to 9. That being said, I encourage people to try to grow them where ever they are and see what happens! Thats part of the fun of gardening. You never know what your gonna get :)
Wow, John! I love this harvest video of yours. I remember watching a similar video you made of sunchokes and it inspired me to start growing some. It's doing great in a small cup right now and I will eventually transplant it to a bigger container. I'm so excited and I hope my harvest will be bountiful as yours. How long was it from your planting to harvesting? Would love to get an idea how it takes for it to be harvestable. Thanks!
I have grown watermelon. Please check my past videos, I have a few videos on watermelon. That being said, if Sunchokes are 1 on a scale of 1 to 10 on "easy to grow", watermelons in my opinion are about a 7.
These taste NOTHING like artichokes... They taste more like water chestnuts and/or Jicama. The ones harvested for this video were cut into chips and taken to a potluck and dipped into guacamole. They were crunchy, fresh, water rich and slightly sweet.

When planting in a container is it like planting potatoes...ie. Adding more soil as the plant grows..or more like growing ginger?

In the pot was a mixture of mallard plus OMRI compost, Rock Dust and Mycorrhiza. They were planted last spring. (early) and FULL SUN is best.
