Caroll doesn't mention J.S. Henslow who secured Darwin the position on the HMS Beagle.
Also Carroll states more than once that the voyage was just as Darwin began to study studied theology. The Beagle left in 1831 the year Darwin graduated from Cambridge with a B.A. in theology.
Joy, if I recall darwin was currently studying theology before he set sail, in fact I know he grew up studying theology prior to moving towards ths study of the natural world prior to the sail.
