Both companies were losing money before the merger, and were rumored to be facing bankruptcy. The companys merged to avoid bankruptcy and to split operating costs (mostly Sirius' costs for Stern)

I really do enjoy O&A but let's face it they could not have started out with a bigger advantage than they had and they still lost. XM had 10 million listeners to Sirius' 600,000 and they talk about how they had better financials, infrastructure, technology, everything and within a couple of years it was done. By the time the merger came XM had 2 choices, merge or die. Either way they got owned. They put on a great show but so does Stern and they can't say they weren't given a shot to win.

@bigdroz1982 I don't know what you mean by losing. They're making good money and have lots of listeners. Howard is getting more paranoid and insane everyday and is extremely overpaid. The company lost money because most of their budget went straight to Howard. He simply doesn't deserve it. It's like when car companies say they're doing badly and have to lay people off while giving their execs 10 million dollar bonuses that same year. Cut the top guy's salary and keep 100 more employees.

@iSOBigD I can't agree more that Howie doesn't deserve $500 MILLION (that hurts to even say) but he does put on a great show, as do O&A. Comparatively none of these multimillionaires is LOSING per se but in that race O&A backed XM fully and Howard backed Sirius and Sirius quickly overtook XM. I'm not saying in any way that O&A is solely responsible for that and neither is Howard. Love him or hate him, Howard is a juggernaut but no he doesn't deserve the money. Both shows are great though.

"And we picked the better company. It's in better shape blah blah blah." XM gone. That is funny. I like O&A and Stern but it is funny to hear them talk about how lousy Sirius was and how great XM was knowing the end result.

the whole gag order on OnA is just a trump card when arguing. Could make a fucking laundry list of true reasons Stern is good and decimate it with "yeah but he put a gag order on OnA"

Another detail is that O&A let Howard fans say what they want. O&A don't censor their calls, even when some of those calls are from Stern fans trying(and failing miserably) to bash the show.

the greatest thing i've heard in a long time was about a month ago when someone called Ron and Fez to yell "baba booey", and ronnie just let him keep yelling it until the guy got mad that he wasn't bothering them, said "fuck you" after a long pause of him realizing what an idiot Ron made out of him, and hung up
