A motor generator, drive also known as a Ward Leonard control, uses a motor driven from mains to run a generator and an exciter. These are in turn used to control a DC motor. With this system it is possible to have a very high performance variable speed drive system.
Monarch was responsible for developing the first numerically controlled lathe back in 1952. They are still making machines today.
