  • I don't think that many people these days have imagination.

  • @Morahman7vnNo2 everyone has imagination.. it's just that most of them don't use it anymore.. it's sad :(

  • I wonder where that retarded saying of "Atlus RPGs suck" came from, but it´s definitely wrong

  • You named your mage Truxton. I hope I'm as awesome as you one day.

  • You've got to love Atlus :D I know I do

  • great review, great game! i loved dungeon crawlers when i was a kid, dungeon master blew my mind. i have nothing bad to say about this game. graphics, music, gameplay, difficulty 10points from me. some young commenters here seems to dislike this game, but for us older players this is turly a gem. you dont need hd-graphics when game is done right and you can/must use your own imagination. it makes these kind of old school games deeper.

  • Holy shit, how did I miss this game? I am buying this ASAP.

  • I do not remember seeing this game in stores when it came out... but I did see it in a gamestore recently. I need to pick it up, I love old school RPGs with those 3D mazes that everybody I knew always got lost in.

  • This is the first Classic Game Room review I ever saw. Because of this video I fell in love with Dark Spire and I fell in love with Classic Game Room. Best video game reviews ever!

  • gonna dig up my old 真女神轉生now... suddenly want to play them again XD think i still got my PS copy somewhere around in my room...

  • Man this game was all right... not my kind of game still gave it a chance i loved the classic move though

  • I fucking LOVE this game. Not even chuck norris can pass this.

  • This game sucks! it is too welly designed for any noob retards who haven't live through the early age of Wizardry or Might and Magic. And the graphic is horrible! How can kids who never understand the romantic feeling of 8-bits or 256c games be able to play this game? And the story is too deep! The shallow mind of now day n00bshi7 who only play online FPS won't be able to handle it! Tis game will overload their mind!

  • @Vostadues *sigh*

  • @Vostadues Isn't most of what you said good? You contradict yourself friend...

  • @alucard123death don't you understand what means "backward reply"? that means something that looks like a pummel but is actually applaud a topic...

  • @Vostadues No but now I do. :O

  • so many memories, dungeon crawlers ruleee!!!

  • Just picked up this game and its brilliant.

Cheers Mark for another great tip, this and Chrono Rage...2 of my faves from the last couple of years.

  • I have this game!

  • true

  • Want this game!

  • This game is the hardest I've played yet...yet I am enjoying it! And it's not just for old gamers, I'm from the PS2 generation, fed RPGs like FFXII and Tales of Symphonia and this game along with Strange Journey have been a blast to play.

  • Had this game on the release day hell I even preordered the damn thing. It's awesome but hard as hell

  • I love this game to death, even though it's a hard motherf***er,

    just like Demon's Souls.

  • Classic Game Room reviews are so much better than IGN or Gamespot reviews. I also love this game. I hate anime artstyles, but I love Japanese games. I didn't even see a hint of anime in this game, so, Dark Spire FTW!

  • Atlus? Like, "publishers of Catherine" Atlus? I must buy this game!

  • i found this game very boring.I also have it on ds.Please dont send me to hell for this

  • looks like a game in the wizardry series.

  • Ever play ZORK?

  • The game looks like it will be impossible to find, but worth looking for

  • Great review. :D

  • "There's not a bunch of jackasses that you have to deal with online."

    YOU, SIR, are amazing!

  • Mark,a lone child playing RPG's in a monochromatic computer.Who would've thiugh about that?

  • I love how Classic Game Room is featured on The Dark Spire's Wikipedia page.

  • I came here because it was mentioned in the e3 2011 video. (part24)

  • What other DS games would interest me? I need DEPTH.

  • Man, this dude gives his videogame characters the best name. :D

  • The one day i forget my wallet, they have darkspire at gamestop for 5 bucks!

  • @soulthepinkmage you can otherwise order it pretty cheap.

  • This game is for hardcore gamers only. Don't expect an easy ride.

  • Should I get this game

  • This game is brilliant, thanks for the great review!

  • "this game kicks your ass until diarrea comes out your dick"

    -james rolfe

  • @CHAOSin8bits lol

  • @CHAOSin8bits so true lol. really suck when you lvl your character and their max hp increase by 1 or 2 O_o

  • Mushrooms?! Really?! They just sit there...step over them?

  • i absolutely love this game <3

  • I'm sorry but this game looks so...damn...lame

  • @datboitmic It's not for everyone, but I HIGHLY suggest trying it out. The first couple of hours are slow but once you really get into it, it's quite addicting. It's possibly the most imaginative game I've ever played (and I've played A LOT of games.

  • @datboitmic It's only for hardcore fans of dungeon crawling and rpg games, so i'm not surprised if you're not liking it ;) I love it though :D

  • what do you use to record? Or do you play on a emulator.?

  • @sharpstylez1 hand camera. :D

  • this game is fun, but its creepy to me a little lol

  • why you don't review dementium the ward???

its the best ds game i ever played

  • Love this game!

  • The second I heard "scoundrel" I knew Mark was going to make an Episode 5 reference.

  • Pokemon stole this idea :( I was ripped off!

  • this game has bad looks

  • oh yes tokyo beat down is good

  • The Dark Spire is one the most criminally underrated and largely ignored gems of the DS library.

  • @btnheazy03 Definitely. I mean, I just heard about it yesterday, and it's been out for almost 2 years. I definitely need to buy it.

  • This game is beast. This and Etrian Odyssey are easily my favourite RPG's in the last few years or so. I think that speaks volumes about the current releases and the wrong turn the genre's taken in some aspects.

  • Gosh I can't find this game anywhere. Anyone know any major retailers that still sell this game?

  • I really dig the music and art style but I couldn't see myself pouring hundreds of hours into it.

  • @illustriouschin I've gotten 4 hours into it and it's really beginning to pick up

  • the music is incredible.

  • Thank you for your comment about childish anime characters.

I love anime to death, but I'm tired of fifty-percent of the video games from Japan forcing me to play as some cabbage patch looking anime teens.

  • Bought it. Hard as fuck. Can't really advance too much. The atmosphere and AWESOME music makes it worth it, though.

  • "It comes with outstanding music and even an audio CD to play in your car when dungeon crawling in your car."

Only Mark could drive and play Dark Spire at the same time.

  • Comment removed

  • Would've been cool had they made another Might and Magic game in this way on the ds.

  • "If you enjoyed role-playing games in the 80's, this game is for you..."

You pretty much sold me on this game with that line, Mark. ^,^

  • man i want this game but i lost my ds :-(

  • Are the random battles in this game as ridiculous as, say... Final Fantasy III on the DS is at times? Or is it less intensive?

  • @niotrotsid More.

  • Etrian Odyssey

  • @Archiez2 but in magnificent...

  • @poyete Agreed

(IM REALLY LATE ON THIS REPLY!)

  • such a lazy game, with the excuse of being a "tribute" game that hold NOTHING new but the annoyance from old school games (dont made me wrong, old school rocks, but many have so many flaws in gameplay/design which were corrected or improved with new gen games, atlus is famous for being lazy and make game that relied TOO MUCH in old school, but also they make games that are so fucking innovated and had nice gameplay additions)

  • I FUCKING LOVE THE 8-BIT SKIN SETTING

  • thank you atlus ;p

  • Someone who knows where I kind find this game for sale? I can't find it anywhere :(

  • @OscarHult you can try online

  • Glad games like this are still around. It makes a great substitute for when you wantto play some dnd but have no friends around ATM. Some of us travel alot because of work and this helps a heaping lot

  • @EnglishTurtle: For what it's worth the actual story of FFVII is VERY overrated. Speaking as a journalist I noted that it WAS a buy because of the unique cast of characters and gameplay which was decent for its time. But for what it's worth it is overall a rental at best.

  • Seems like this game is really hard to find now.

  • Not so fond of the classic mode, but the 'normal' game looks good if you're into Dungeon Master-type games. This could easily eat up a long time.

  • Great classic graphic, hypnotizing music but inhuman, hardcore difficult gameplay spoiled that gem game for me.

  • @Ziiilder my friend, there´s the fun, in surviving against all odds when all that´s left of your party is the low-level thief.then is when you know your skill and luck made the difference, not the programmer´s difficulty curve, and that (and the game depth instead of just graphic depth) is what made these games awesome.I´m 23 and I always have some freeware or abandonware dungeon crawlers like this, and believe me , there ARE harder games out there(ever played rogue?I think it´s free...)

  • this is really classical RPG.... Although I don't like to play these games in videogames.... I prefer to play it in real life with books and all(don't know how you call this kind of RPG)

  • Looks cool! Are the maps randomly generated?

  • @100PurpleCoins Well, Dark Spire is nothing like either Okami or Zelda, but I'd pick it up if you get the opertunity. It's a very different (or more the the point, retro) experience that you'll either love or hate. I tried it and loved it, so give it a go.

  • Great review for a phenomenal game.

  • I NEED THIS

  • Where can you buy this game, its mega rare!

  • @arisco1070 go die some where you shity piece of fuck. :) Take your family with you when ya burn in HELL.

  • 5:40

    Poo?

  • GO SCOUNDRELS

  • o_0 you said you wernt fond of rpg games in another episode

  • looks fun, i like old style stuff like this :)

Too bad this was never released in th UK:(

  • @daveman247 get a us ds :)

  • @RandomGameStuffs the ds is region free you know :P

Anyway i just imported the game, its awesome XD

  • I don't trust that maiden. NOT ONE BIT.

  • what is a rpg game

  • @Ferrari123planb a role-playing game game :)

  • this game looks like etrian odyssey. i love this type of game much hardcore . classic rpg is the game for real RPG fan. quality or not quality the gameplay counts a lot. since all start with non quality game its much better than today. it lacks gameplay. though unique but it lacks gamers tastes

  • To be honest, I don't think this game appeals to anyone from the 90's. lol

Dungeon crawlers and level grinding never ever appeal to me but I have to admit, the artstyle here is awesome.

  • @EnglishTurtle You are a clown who knows NOTHING. I spent THOUSANDS of hours in the NINETIES playing video games (GREAT, QUALITY games) and I can tell you that there are PLENTY of others juuuuuuuust like me who LOVE these kinds of REALNESS.

    Imbecile...

  • @djfakt

    From the nineties? yea right...

How many of these dungeon crawlers actually competed with games like FF7 anyways?

  • @EnglishTurtle I like these kinds of games, and as much as I like FF7 I think that it is overrated.

  • @sozaj

    Haha no.

FF7 is not overrated. I do not understand why people think FF7 is overrated. They act like the game just came out yesterday. It didn't

FF7 came out long ago in the Playstation 1 era, and at that time, FF7 was considered a masterpiece. The beautiful still backgrounds, amazing story presentation, artwork, etc. Back then, FF7 was the most recognized RPG.

  • @EnglishTurtle As I said I like it very much, and as good as the story is there's no flexibility. But it was quite a landmark and is still a modern classic. I mean no offense to anyone here, but the over adoring fanbase tends to sour the good memory of it. Still an awesome game though, I just really like it when Japanese developers take a page from Western RPG design and add Flexibility like with Shin Megami Tensei (ironically) and Demon's Souls.

  • @EnglishTurtle I will have to disagree with you. I will admit that FFVII brought RPGs to the mainstream when it came out, it's not really anything special. The story is very cliche and generic, the characters are boring and barely have personalities. This isn't a problem in older games, but in a game that was built up for innovations, it was underwhelming. Of course, this is my opinion, and you have yours.

I happen to think FFVII is a terrible game, and I'd rather play EarthBound or Lunar.

  • @LtCharlieNash

The thing is that FF7 wasn't cliched or generic for it's time. The characters did have personalities, and you may say that Cloud's emo personality is generic, but FF7 was one of the first games to have a main character that was rude and grumpy with an emo dress style. Cloud was pretty original for it's time, and thats why everyone remembers him.

  • @EnglishTurtle Actually Cloud is just confused, especially in the end of the game when he gets his shit together his personality goes in to that of a little cheery boy.

But if you really want to point out a emo character from FFVII then that is Vincent. I mean DAMN! He lives in a fucking coffin. Now how emo is that?

  • @LtCharlieNash FF7 stands as the only video game of its kind. Its preoccupation with motion pictures instead of video games make it a deeply flawed but no less fascinating piece of work. It is the Dr. Caligari of video games.

  • @EnglishTurtle I actually quite like old school dungeon crawlers. And even though FF7 is fantastic, there's just some sort of charm to old school dungeon crawlers..

    No offense, just saying.

  • @djfakt Here here!

  • This Game is Truly AMAZING

  • If you are an old-school gamer who loved his share of Might & Magic II back in the days, please do yourself a favor and buy this game.

It really doesn't get much better than this.

The music is outstanding, as is the art, and being able to switch both from ultra-retro to modern-but-still-retroish at any time, is simply brilliant.

Beware tho: the game is brutal, and I mean REALLY brutal, unforgiving and only for thos patient enough to level up their charakters.

  • Both you and PeteDorr love this game, it makes me want to get it. But it looks so odd to me? I ahve an issue with how alot of the info is conveyed in text, I usually don't read in battle text, I just look to see who's hit and who gets status afflictions.

If I can find it for pretty cheap though I will pick it up. You two are my favorite game guys ever.

  • So why the F*CK didn't this ever came out in Germany (or Europe, I don't know where it actually came out). I ordered it today (import)....the best games NEVER show up here, what's up with that shit?! Excuse my expression, but it really begins to piss me off, I don't even dare anymore to search for good games in the I-net because I would only realize that there are about 9000 other great games that never appeared here! >_< I wanna bet that only about 1% of the people in my country even heard the

  • name of this game and THATS sad! The people are missing so much while so many other worse games get popular or just become overrated...Take Final Fantasy and Persona for example. It's just me I know but I would say Persona is better in any case, let it be characters, plot, music and gameplay and I'm sure everyone who played it would agree. It's just not recognized as FF, the letter is overrated...damn media -_-Something's wrong in this world and I'm seriously trying not to be a fanboy right

  • here >_>' Sorry folks, I'm just tired and stressed out right now and always wanted to say that~

    *annoyed sigh*

  • Hell yeah, It's Atlus, the game can't be bad!! Just think of Persona 3 & 4!

    *sigh* I love these games...<3

  • I'm going to buy this and (FF3 DS) this weekend because of this review. Can't wait.

  • Don't forget that atlas also produced and published the Etrian Odyssey series, which are, in my opinion, the best games on the DS and my favorite RPG's.

  • damn, should have snagged this when it was $10 brand new!

  • Great game. And, wuh, great review :).

  • are you insolting anime,o no you dident 2:26 LOL

  • Ok I will buy it now!

  • i totally agree with your music comment

  • *Takes a look at this video after seeing his SMT: SJ review*

Ah... DEF-TREX... I see what you did thar.

  • This Game Doesn't Look like my Style...but As Always your Reviews are Great. Keep Up the Good Work!

  • I don't really like this game for some reason. I could never get into it.... But I didn't play enough of it in the first place. Maybe I should try it again.....

  • @TheInunah Everybody's got their own tastes in games. Don't force yourself to like one game when there's a ton of other games that you already like.

  • I actualy bought a ds to play this game, and it's one of the best rpg on a handheld i have played!

  • I love customization in RPG games, too many rpgs on the PS2 are dead set on making you play a pre-made protagonist. I like to play my own ideas and I will definately look into this game since I have a DS.

  • I may get this game. The music is just awesome.Good old memorys. And the classic mode looks great.

  • Hey everyone, instead of just being smarmy, why not tell me why, exactly, RPGs have to be long. Show me a definition in a dictionary or something that says "Game based on stats and level building and exploration" means "Has to be long".

  • GilbertSmith, I just want to know how it feels to be completely wrong... I guess ignorance is bliss..

Everything you said, makes you look/sound like a total fool.. Learn about video games before you try to argue about them..

  • @CitrusMJ

You're defining games by the wrong rules. Most RPGs are long, but RPG is defined as: Role playing game, not Long Game. Learn how to think before you open your mouth, or nothing but shit will fall out.

  • reminds me of DARK TOWER from vectrex...

  • I just like simplistic Graphics, dammit! :-))

  • @Merettich then it's a matter of taste :-), i try it, it's no bad like a rpg, cause it's a REAL rpg, but there is no graphics animation, and this is bad, for me...

  • you talk shit,

    GilbertSmith.

    Hey, that rimes! :)

  • @Merettich You don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

  • why does this guy sound sarcastic all the time?

  • this game is super shitty...

  • @sharkpyro93

you made me cry with that comment...

  • @Merettich why? it's the truth, listen, i love the rpg's but this game it's an epic fail, lol, i played many rpg but this...ooh, a dog's shit it's better than this game...look! look the graphics, the gameplay the sound, looks like a old commodore...-.-'

  • @sharkpyro93

I find the Graphics and sound awesome.

Also, there's nothing wrong with old sega or commodore.

  • @Merettich where you find the graphics awesome? tell me, i want know...maybe i can change judgement...

  • @Merettich why? it's the truth, this game it's horrible, listen, i love the rpg's but a dog's shit it's better than this game!look! look! the graphics, the sound, the gameplay, looks like my ooold sega console...

  • Is it like Wasteland? I liked Wasteland....like a lot....if not it still looks like something I would truly adore. This game has cult classic written all over it.

  • I like that he's reviewing obscure games, but he's too gushingly nostalgic for his own good. We get it, it's a throw back to your childhood, but as a reviewer you have to be objective about these things. There's nothing wrong with fancy graphics or lack thereof, texts, anime stereotypes, etc. The totality of the whole game experience is what's important.

  • Not all reviews have to be the same. Some of them should be more expressive to let those of us who are tired of the same cliches know that they're talking our language. There are other ways to do it, you're right, but this guy's gotten popular for expressing his particular angle, and they make for entertaining and informative reviews in their own right.

  • @salazarmark

    2 things:

    1. It's his review. He can do it however he likes.

    2. What i hate about video game reviews (or rather reviews in general) these days is that there is a lot of objectivity (good), but ZERO (0) personality or personal thought (Baaaaaaad).

If i'm going to watch/read/listen to a review, then what i'd like to know is what the reviewer thought of the "it" (movie/game/book), or how the reviewer interpreted the "it".

If all i wanted to know is WHAT it was, i'd go watch a trailer.

  • @Locriannightmare:

....I... I don't know whether to go laughing out of my mind or hang my head in shame and sadness... "objectivity" in reviews? They're highly subjective, but aiming towards a specific gamer genre, public or simply keeling over the possible backlash from admitting that a highly acclaimed game is crap or mediocre.

X-play focuses on mainstream and casual gamers. Gametrailers focuses on mainstream and favors Xbox360. Escapist leans slightly niche. Problem: No objective reviewers.

  • @Testsubject909

You seem to misunderstand me; what i'm tired of hearing is what the graphics are like, what the gameplay is like, what the story is like etcetera...

I mean, sure, these things are all open to some amount of interpretation. But generally, all of these things are pretty much "objective" per se (gameplay in Mario games for an example. There really isn't much to say except it's excellent.).

What i mean by this is while i like informative reviews focusing on basic "facts",(continued)

  • @Testsubject909

what really gets me going is when a reviewer tells his personal opinion, his thoughts about what transpires.

For me it's generally the little things in games that make them worthwhile playing, the things that aren't "general" or something that you see in fifty billion other games of the same genre.

As i've said, if i wanted to see a review which is more like an infomercial rounded of with a predictable score i might as well watch a video of the gameplay.

  • So....how long is it? Do you know now? Or does someone else have the answer? Anything below 10 and I won't get it. Otherwise I am getting it for sure.

  • @Hamhark98

It is looooong. Maybe not Dragon-Age-long, but it's going to take more than a few weekends to beat this one.

  • Follow up question. Is it any good? Is it like the old FF games (1 and 2 old) in that it has very basic combat and that is why people give it crap scores in which case I don't mind or is it just terrible.

  • @Hamhark98

It's not like Final Fantasy; this is very much an American RPG despite its Japanese origins. Combat is deep and INCREDIBLY tough. I stress that because you will die countless times if you don't carefully calculate each move.

As for combat's complexity, characters are placed into either the front row or the back row; only the front row can use melee attacks, but the back row is better shielded. And then there's all sorts of moves you can use in battle, like swift vs strong attacks.

  • That's kind of silly, like saying "I'm not going to go watch that movie unless it's three hours long". But yeah it's pretty long. I'm 14 hours in and not even halfway done.

  • If you took TOK in school you would know that what you have said is a false analogy and a very bad one at that. Movies cost significanly less and are for an evening of fun. They are meant to be done with in a short period of time. Games on the other hand cost significantly more and are meant to be pretty lengthy. Movies are meant to be done in one sitting whilst games are meant to last many nights. They can be paused and finished the next day. Huge difference.

  • You obviously have a very narrow perspective on things. Let's go over all the stupid stuff you just said...

1- Who says games ARE long? In fact, most games are not. It's only recent generations of games that are supposed to take a long time to beat.

2- Who are you to say what games are? Especially when you've only described a very, very narrow range of video games.

3- Games cost significantly more? The Dark Spire costs five bucks new. That's one fourth the cost of the average DVD. (cont..)

  • 4- While the norm has been for games to be long and expensive for a few years, this is a recent trend, and only a trend. In the old days a game could be completed in two hours. More recent games have had shorter lengths, and we've been seeing more games released at lower prices.

5- Length really doesn't equal quality, that's my point, and you obviously missed it because you were so eager to flaunt the most useless college degree ever that you missed the big picture (cont.)

  • 6- You are defining an entire artform by a very narrow range of examples. Saying games ARE long, games ARE expensive, is like saying that Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in every movie because some of them do.

7- Actually, you are defining movies as narrowly as you are games. Movies are for an evening of fun? So a movie like Irreversible or Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is an evening of fun in your book?

8- Read about art and form new thoughts, because your current ones are useless.
