but i can't get it how they fly i see that the fuselage is perfect nothing is interrupting the flow of air but how, how? and that kind of speed that's amazing
In terms of the songs, you have (1) Gimme Some Lov'in - Spencer Davis Group, (2) Song 2 - Blur (obviously as the second track) and (3) Horizons - LTJ Bukem. Horizons is also here on YouTube if you do a quick search.
I come back to this clip every couple of months to remind myself what Gliding in the Summers (and Winters) can be like here in the UK. Roll on the longer warmer days ...
Great video and excellent music. Any idea what glider can take a pilot of about 260lbs? Apart from making the glider a bit nose heavy what other problems are caused by a too heavy pilot? As you can tell I don't have much experience.
@nightrider836 I'm a heavyish glider pilot but the gliders I'm training in can take about 180kgs. GThere are no big problems from a heavy pilot as long as you are in weight limitations of your glider.
Hope this answers your question
P.S: I'm training in the polish Puchacz two seater
The ballast is water. It increases the wing loading. Better wing loading means best glide speed increases (Best glider speed= speed that you go the further for the altitude that you loose. Not to be confused with the min sink speed=loosing the least altitude for any given time). For a glider this is a good because it means its more efficient at higher speeds and you can fly longer distances. Up to 1000+km are flown regularly in Australia, the best place for gliding!!
It's purely weight ballast, located on the centre of gravity, and it helps the aircraft penetrate in windy conditions. The aircraft glides much faster when ballasted. The glide ratio isn't reduced as much as we might think, which is why the ballast is almost always dumped before landing.
Oh, and the scene at 2:05 is one of the greatest in gliding vids!!! Lovin' it!!!!
@oraclepw Thank you, very informative. Here's another question if you have the time. Wouldn't the water inside of the aircraft cause some type of handling problems due to the dynamics of the water movement? Forgive my ignorance, I'm just doing as much research as I possibly can. Also, I think you are right about the scene at 2:05, just awesome!!!
The water is held inside the forward half of the wings in sealed bags or tanks that are just sealed off sections of the wing structure. It generally doesn't slosh around very much. The extra weight makes the handling a little more sluggish, but also smooths out the ride in turbulence. Ballast allows the glider to fly faster at any given glide angle at the cost of a modest penalty in climb rate. In strong conditions the climb rate penalty is more than made up for by the faster cruise speed.

@Carefree27b But, carrying water ballast does also mean that the stall speed is increased meaning that you are forced to fly faster throughout the whole flight, which can be a disadvantage. If you hit a large area of poor lift you might need to be able to fly slower to make more of climbs, which may mean dumping water.
ahh france....i agree...ive only seen french countryside form a eurostar window but from what i saw it was stunning :) and i like how you've used a capital letter for everywhere but france lool XD
Gliders get so high with the help of: Thermals, Ridge lift, Wave lift and some other sources of lift... you can find it all in Wikipedia, search for - Glider, Gliding, Thermal, Ridge lift and Lee waves.
Well, on takeoff, they can use a high speed and high powered winch to get them to altitude, then they can either thermal, slope soar, or even have a plane tow them to very high altitudes.
I have several hundred hours flight time in powered aircraft, and about two hours logged in gliders. Those two hours were the most enjoyable, I'm hoping to get into more gliding in the near future ^^ Great video btw!

Normal single sitter gliders have 100-110 kgs pilot...
Get a two sitter glider, sit in the back seat and get a light guy to sit in the front seat!

What is the water for? Is it for ballast? If so, what kind of ballast is it providing and why? - thank you

@dnahm1 it shouldn't be a factor at all if the glider is flown in a coordinated fashion.

trashcanjuly 4 years ago
Point the nose at the ground and let gravity do the work? Bits tend to start falling off if you go much over about 180mph though.
