horsing around with expensive broadcasting equipment, regardless of actual speed and so forth is (for lack of better words) stupid. It sucks to the person below if you really were the person involved and got fired... but you consciously chose to drive the vehicle. It's a financial risk to the station as well as a human risk to others.

I've interned at a news station and have several friends in broadcast and that would NOT fly at all where I worked or they work.

In addition, they're on the clock... not doing what they're being paid to do. That alone can be grounds for termination. Add in putting themselves at risk, their vans +equipment at risk and the negative publicity for the stations (and it is...it makes the stations look *really* unprofessional) termination is justifiable. however, it shouldn't have all just rested on the shoulders of the photog... the anchor + other employees should have known better.

If these reporters/photogs/drivers want to slap a station sticker on their own personal vehicle and race for the honor of their station, then that's one thing. To take a very expensive vehicle not belonging to you and doing something that's potentially hazardous is another. I work in the news, so I'm taking two viewpoints on this.

On one hand, it's cool seeing two news teams have a little friendly competition.

On the other hand, it is completely irresponsible to do such a stunt. And in a time when everyone uses cell phone cameras, how did they NOT expect this to make its way back to upper management? Like someone mentioned above, those live vans are not cheap, and contain way too much heavy machinery that cold jeopardize a lot of lives.

I would think KVIA would fire their shooter for the same reason, and maybe slap their new anchor Rick Cabrera on the hand, who was supposedly covering the story for participating. Anyone in the news business that thinks this is funny doesn't realize the consequences of wrecking a vehicle that can cost over 200-thousand dollars, or what if the vehicle flipped over? Carelessness, inmaturity and the stations are to blame for hiring people with none of that.
