They don't mention that Sergio Leone also turned down the opportunity to direct the Godfather. He wanted to make what later became Once Upon a Time in America but it took him another 10 years before he could start. Today, it is often compared to the Godfather.

As much as I'm a fan of Leone, I'm happy Coppola got to do this film because I really can't imagine it being made by another director.
