When you river jump I'm pretty sure you hold B when you put the pole in the river and keep it held until you are almost at the peak. Release B just before the pole is vertical to clear the river.

Yup! That seems to be the trick to it. I too could never get it reliably either but following your advice, it's no problem.

I have never gotten a boot throw past 30 feet, so it must be the max.
