Mozart and Beethoven were contemporary's, the latter the younger of the two - both were proliferating during the transitional period between the baroque and great classical romantic periods - it would be quite unfair to compare the two, it would be a disservice to both as they stood without peer during their time, even Hayden & Schubert remain in their shadows, over 200 years later
I was happy to read the comments about how great Mozart and to share my love, but all I can read is who was better than who and blabla... I'm sure that if mozart and beethoven would have lived in the same time period, they would've admired each other!
@JetsToBrazil05 Well did you know that Mozart and Beethoven met each other in Viena, after Beethoven had played for Mozart he said " Look after this young man , someday he is gonna make his name known around the world". Also the fact is that Beethoven adrmired Mozart, Beethoven studyed Mozarts works. Myself i love them both but whom i like more at the moment depends about my mood.
@jani14jani I know ;) I live in Vienna and went to music school, so we do know a lot about music history. Beethoven tried to study all of mozart's work but with the time he found his own style of composing, which is good! I just meant in the same music period or when they were both in the peak of their music "career", since Mozart was almost 15 years older and died so early. the music also has changed back then and was growing through the years, so it's nonsense to compare these two. that's all.
@JetsToBrazil05 You live in Viena? Thats cool, I have been listening to classical music only two years, but more i listen to it, more i start to love it. I even have two euro coins with Mozarts picture on them.
Beethoven can't hold a candle to Mozart. Before flaring up to my comment, listen to Mozart's Sonata no. 10 in C Major, K330 (all 3 Movements) and compare them with any of Beethoven's finest etudes
Oh my God people, The reason I said Beethoven was Romantic, because he is a very important transitional figure. Therefore I put him in Romantic. Besides their styles are completely different. Now I shall go be "fucking dumb" and fail at life.
erm.... Beethoven is a late Classical plus early Romantic composer and Mozart is Classical composer, i never heard Beethoven is classified in Romantic Period only.
@stefann93 Beethoven was barely in the classical era, his style is extremely different. And if you want your voice and opinion heard, its better to do it with a nice tone. thanks xoxoxo

And a little thingy called the moonlight sonata, and für Elise. Let us also mention the missa solemnis, piano concerto 5, and MUCH MORE. face it dude, Beethoven earned his place among legends
@burkewhb Hello burke. It's true it's a matter of personal preference and the composers you mentioned were all great.
I mentioned Beethoven as the greatest because his compositions are simply perfect, with beauty and depth complimenting each other so flawlessly well. No other classical composer has accomplished that as consistently as he did. Mozart, while brilliant, sounds light and frivolous next to Beethoven.
Now that I think back on it, Bhutan was probably off-limits to Americans and others at that time....however I'm still envious of your excursion. I"ve seen several productions on television about Bhutan and Mustang and wish I had been able to go there. I raise a glass of Coke to your health.
Arguably the most brilliant opera overture ever composed, Rossini's Barbiere and Gazza Ladra come close seconds, and the grand Wagnerian overtures are in a different category. Such magic, such genius, coming from a prolific young composer in the 18th century! How could he know his music would remain immortal in this trashy, cheap, stupid 21st century? Any idiots who could possibly dislike this (mostly ignorant Americans) do not deserve to even enter the discussion. Listen, people, and marvel!
@philipc67 ..It's difficult to understand why an educated man in the medical profession would condemn Americans as ignorant. Yes, many of us are. I see them every day. There is, however, a vast pool of my fellow citizens who are quite well educated and possess refined tastes. Should Greeks be considered ignorant since people like Pythagoras and Democritus haven't appeared in Greece since before Christ? I think not. Grant us the same consideration.
Of course, you are correct. I was referring to Americans who post comments on Youtube here, the vast majority of whom cannot even properly use the spelling and grammar of their "native" language.
Why shouldn't the vast majority of Americans be ignorant? You elected that moron George W Bush twice, invaded Iraq and Afghanistan for no coherent reason, killing thousands of your troops unnecessarily, cannot find India on the map, repeatedly butcher the English language even in major publications, not knowing when to use "that" instead of "who" and "it's" instead of "its", and know no adjective apart from "amazing"! All nationalities have drawbacks, accept yours with grace.
@philipc67 ....I concur when it comes to butchering the language. I find it egregious as well. Are all Greeks expert at oration and elocution on par with Demosthenes? The USA isn't alone in making poor choices. I'm sure you remember the recent financial debacle in your country. Leaders and ordinary citizens in both our countries should become re-acquainted with Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes" and realize that elected leaders sometimes have feet of clay.
@philipc67 ..At this point I see no need in perpetuating this puerile, fruitless discourse. I feel that it makes both of us appear as pubescent children, not educated men. In view of this I will disengage from this comedy driven by nationalism and leave the arena solely to you. If you feel the exigency of riposte, please live up to your ancient ancestors. Thank you.
Thank YOU. By the way, the majority of modern Greeks are trash, too. Look at the way they litter, flaunt anti-smoking legisltation, double-park everywhere, and avoid paying tax. I was impressed by your recent choice of words. Did it take you very long to look them up in the dictionary so you could use them in such an appropriate manner on Youtube? How AMAZING (an adjective Americans like)! Go home and eat a greaseburger, little boy.
@philipc67 The only place I've been in Greece is Athens during a brief lay-over on my way to India. This truncated visit didn't allow me to observe the habits of Greek citizens and I'm not qualified to comment on Greek behaviour.. I'll have my greaseburger with fried potatoes and a Coca Cola, thank you. For you I recommend some moussaka or souflaki, washed down with a gallon of ouzo, or do you visit McDonalds often? Incidentally, condescension is declasse' for a purportedly educated man, lad.
@philipc67 ..I'm happy to see that you are a reasonable man and have decided to withdraw from our pubescent squabbling via internet. I accept and offer you similar apologies for my own behaviour. Enough of our childish exchange for which I'm also to blame. I visited India frequently 25 years ago as I was doing business there. I spent a great deal of time in India but never got to Bhutan, so I'm envious. I had a driver take me on a scintillating trip from Delhi up to Manali.
@philipc67 ..I say "scintillating" because the drive up there over those mountain roads was hair-raising at times with many stretches with NO guardrail to keep you from plunging to your death. We encountered snow, with which my driver had no experience. The drive took 2 1/2 days back then and Manali was just a sleepy village, not the ski destination it is now. A Padmini (Fiat clone) yellow and black taxi was our magic carpet. I have memories of those times which I will never forget.
@philipc67 I know when you look at American TV and such you don't really see the best of the best but "(mostly ignorant Americans)" really? There are many of us "ignorant Americans" who love this, and more phil.. I'm sure I could sling a few generalized pejoratives about Greeks if I were so inclined. Not sure how necessary that was.
I think that this masterpiece demonstrates the brilliance and genius of Mozart more than any of his other works. I think he was the greatest composer and Handel a close second. I know Bach is considered great, but I've always found his music a little boring. Mozart's operas, particularly Don Giovanni, Marriage of Figaro, and Abduction from the Seraglio, are so light and easy to listen to. I think Beethoven, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky were great also.
I do agree with paulatreides123 . The complete difference between Mozart and Bach is that there huge turning point between those two musicians which began with Haydn symphonies. Bach and the barocco period musicians were following very strict rules for composition and orchestration; Haydn brought a major change by freeing himself of this academic style and opened vast possibilities to the subsequent composers. I suggest to read Stendahl's book on Haydn.
You know, I took a college course on classical music and didn't truly appreciate the art form. It takes a recognition of the art form and an understanding of musical theory to truly comprehend peices such as these. Not only is this music technically impressive, it implies a much deeper emotional level that most modern music is unable to attain.
LOL at all the people comparing classical to pop music. Mozart vs. Kanye West or Britney Spears? Simply NO comparison. Like comparing McDonalds to filet mignon. Plus, I have a hard time imagining Haydn or other contemporary getting an award in some royal palace and Mozart interrupting with "I'm sorry but Haydn had one of the best piano concertos of all time."
@theraviolicat nil. music has died im afraid. it survives in small independent artists and within these songs. struggling too keep itself afloat and not drowned away by the horror of pop and r'n'b
@parkerboyuk alright yes that was pretentious. but think about the music people are listenign to nowadays. its just simple idiotic waste. but this. if people started listening to this or soemthing like i dunno? two steps from hell( check em out theyre pretty incredible orchestral group) then i would have a bit more faith in the music industry and such.
I tell you one thing. You can't appreciate today's talent until you listen to this stuff.
I am a heavy metal nut, I love my rock BUT this is deep heavy stuff. And whiel it's nice to hear bands like Yes, ELP, Ritchie Blackmoore use and draw from this stuff, you can't beat it in it's "pure" form.
He really was a rock star in his day - very popular, even when he was still alive.
It is nice to know that there are other modern musicians out there that appreciate the roots of their modern genres, and are able to connect many of the musical elements to earlier periods of music history.
He really was a rock star in his day - very popular, even when he was still alive.
It is nice to know that there are other modern musicians out there that appreciate the roots of their modern genres, and are able to connect many of the musical elements to earlier periods of music history.
@eahazell Completely agree. SO glad you said this. You'll never be able to appreciate modern music fully unless you have some sort of appreciation for the foundation.
@eahazell so many people overlook the colossal influence classical music has had on metal, including me until i saw metal:a headbanger's journey, but when you know what you're looking for it's so obvious
@bappabuiebappabuie1 a good acquaintance of mine from high school in 1979 was a big rock listener. Always putting down the band and chorus. Imagine my surprise when a few years later (back when MTV actually played videos) I saw him as a drummer in a big hair band. (Not of my favorites either) So many rocker fans put down classical, jazz, blues etc. Yet almost every interview I've seen with some top metal bands they were in the school band. Some weren't most were. Most like all forms of music
Kind of an ibid to my reply to bappabuiebappabuie1 But especially in the UK, so many of teh great musicians that came out of Britain were way into many forms of music and classically trained. It's a no brainer with progressive bands liek ELP, Yes etc. But Lemmy from Motorhead, Clapton, Winwood..all had classical training.
@eahazell please stop comparing geniuses like Mozart and Bach to today's vulgare and obscure "musicians". Damn, todays youth doesn't know talent when they see it.
@Lity10 I disagree Lily. I grew up listening to jazz, rock, pop and metal...I was lucky to also gain an appreciation of classical, and by that I appreciate modern music even more. Today's musicians, especially those from the British invasion? were seeped in classical training and it shows. Keith Emerson? Ian Anderson? David Gilmore? Peter Gabriel? Elton John? To say that their contribution isn't significant is to be a snob. W/o a knowledge of classical their genius would have faltered and died.
@Lity10 and really Lily, vulgare and obscure musicians? (maybe you ment obscene, but that too is a snobbish comment) If you can't see the beauty of todays music in it's own right, to appreciate it along with classical is rather closed minded. Sure todays pop music is crap, no depth but a rather blanket comment don't you think? And if you called any of those artists obscure shows a rather narrow mind set., or a real lack of understanding.
@eahazell okay, obscure was a wrong word. "The beauty of todays music"? Erhm.. what? I'm not narrowminded, ive listened to all kinds of new music.... and it fucking sucks. Name one beautiful thing :O?
@Lity10 Listen to any Clapton guitar solo, or Stevie Ray Vaughn.. if you cannot see the beauty in Claptons solo in "while my guitar gently weeps" then you just do not like modern music, you just don't or won't get it. If s , then I feel sorry for you. A Clapton Guitar solo can make me just as emotional as the 9th symphony... if you can't hear that then I really feel sorry for you. You ar etruely closed off and sheltered
@eahazell nah, sorry, not good. I hate electric guitars. Cuts through the ears like every other shitty modern "music". Sorry, nothinig beats Beethoven 9th symphony :(
@eahazell - Excellent post. Those were bands I listened to (Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman are my favorite keyboard players) along with the big groups and Ian Anderson/Tull, the Moody Blues, Alan Parsons and others. I realized why I liked that music when I started working in opera. You need understand the building blocks of music and have the ability to arrange those blocks.
@jaysong87 we do they are just hidden..commercialism and "popularity" gets the mediocrity of justin beeber, and todays other pop stars and rappers fame..while true talent hides in small concert halls , clubs and jazz ensembles, colleges and small venues. the talent is out there it is overshadowed by the beige.
omg .....there shouldn't be a stupid discussion about nerds AND classical music. I never thought about such stuff until I found these comments here! I love this music, did never care what people think about me in this topic and I wont give a f*** about it in future. actually I am looking for an aria of figaros marriage, do somebody know where I can find it ?
@Winter077 I just hate them. They hate classical music and prefer pop. This is disgusting. To me, both pop and classical are good. I don't hate pop. Please don't misunderstand me. I just hate people who "prefer" pop music instead classical music.
@tarikay93 so what? being called a nerd isnt bad..i play baseball and have mad popular freinds and all that"preppy bullshit" but its not being nerdy to like classical music nor is it nerdy 2 be smart..and again if they call u nerd jus call em sumthin back or ignore em right?
and where did this get us? dubstep. this music creates emotion and has depth. Dubstep creates mind numbingness and obnoxious noises.

@ManilaSyndicate Actually, you've forgotten who could conceivably be the greatest composer
of all: Handel. I don't think you can really compare the three. They were all geniuses but composed
in different styles for the era they lived in. Wagner and Tchaikovsky were no slouches, either.

@ManilaSyndicate Hello, manila. You think Mozart's music is frivolous? You' re out of your mind, aren't you?
Beethoven was great, but I find his music to often be very deep and serious. You have to be in the mood to
listen to it. My favorite of his is The Pastoral, which I listened to in college so much my classmates made fun
of me. Mozart's music tends to be more light-hearted and easy to listen to, especially his operas. like the

@burkewhb No, I'm not out of my mind, it's just that ol' Ludwig was so great he made Wolfgang at times frivolous. :-)
"Pastoral" is one of his best and which highlights his genius. Non-stop classic consistency from start to finish, nary a slow or wasted moment.

It's good that people on Mozart videos can sort out their disagreements, unlike the people on practically every other video on youtube! Go Wolfy!
Actually, came looking for versions of Susanna's arias and just had to listen to the overture of the opera on my way through :)

Is there a performance of this wonderful piece of music where the soft notes aren't quite so soft and the loud notes not quite so loud?
ajdicks 1 year ago
Arguably the most brilliant opera overture ever composed, Rossini's Barbiere and Gazza Ladra come close seconds, and the grand Wagnerian overtures are in a different category. Such magic, such genius, coming from a prolific young composer in the 18th century! How could he know his music would remain immortal in this trashy, cheap, stupid 21st century? Any idiots who could possibly dislike this (mostly ignorant Americans) do not deserve to even enter the discussion. Listen, people, and marvel!
philipc67 1 year ago
@philipc67 ..It's difficult to understand why an educated man in the medical profession would condemn Americans as ignorant. Yes, many of us are. I see them every day. There is, however, a vast pool of my fellow citizens who are quite well educated and possess refined tastes. Should Greeks be considered ignorant since people like Pythagoras and Democritus haven't appeared in Greece since before Christ? I think not. Grant us the same consideration.
SpeedyNeutrino43 1 year ago
@SpeedyNeutrino43
Of course, you are correct. I was referring to Americans who post comments on Youtube here, the vast majority of whom cannot even properly use the spelling and grammar of their "native" language.
philipc67 1 year ago
@SpeedyNeutrino43
All nationalities have drawbacks, accept yours with grace.
philipc67 1 year ago
@philipc67 ....I concur when it comes to butchering the language. I find it egregious as well. Are all Greeks expert at oration and elocution on par with Demosthenes? The USA isn't alone in making poor choices. I'm sure you remember the recent financial debacle in your country. Leaders and ordinary citizens in both our countries should become re-acquainted with Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes" and realize that elected leaders sometimes have feet of clay.
SpeedyNeutrino43 1 year ago
@philipc67 ..At this point I see no need in perpetuating this puerile, fruitless discourse. I feel that it makes both of us appear as pubescent children, not educated men. In view of this I will disengage from this comedy driven by nationalism and leave the arena solely to you. If you feel the exigency of riposte, please live up to your ancient ancestors. Thank you.
SpeedyNeutrino43 1 year ago
@SpeedyNeutrino43
Go home and eat a greaseburger, little boy.
philipc67 1 year ago
@philipc67 The only place I've been in Greece is Athens during a brief lay-over on my way to India. This truncated visit didn't allow me to observe the habits of Greek citizens and I'm not qualified to comment on Greek behaviour.. I'll have my greaseburger with fried potatoes and a Coca Cola, thank you. For you I recommend some moussaka or souflaki, washed down with a gallon of ouzo, or do you visit McDonalds often? Incidentally, condescension is declasse' for a purportedly educated man, lad.

@philipc67 ..This exchange has become too amusing to discontinue at this time, thus my retort.
SpeedyNeutrino43 1 year ago
@SpeedyNeutrino43
I agree, apologies for any condescending comments I sent you.
Let's be nice to each other.
Personally I don't particularly like ouzo.
When and where did you go to India?
I was there for 2 months in 1992, then managed to go to Bhutan.
philipc67 1 year ago
@philipc67 ..I'm happy to see that you are a reasonable man and have decided to withdraw from our pubescent squabbling via internet. I accept and offer you similar apologies for my own behaviour. Enough of our childish exchange for which I'm also to blame. I visited India frequently 25 years ago as I was doing business there. I spent a great deal of time in India but never got to Bhutan, so I'm envious. I had a driver take me on a scintillating trip from Delhi up to Manali.
SpeedyNeutrino43 1 year ago
@philipc67 ..I say "scintillating" because the drive up there over those mountain roads was hair-raising at times with many stretches with NO guardrail to keep you from plunging to your death. We encountered snow, with which my driver had no experience. The drive took 2 1/2 days back then and Manali was just a sleepy village, not the ski destination it is now. A Padmini (Fiat clone) yellow and black taxi was our magic carpet. I have memories of those times which I will never forget.
SpeedyNeutrino43 1 year ago

Benlandia 1 year ago
LOL at all the people comparing classical to pop music. Mozart vs. Kanye West or Britney Spears? Simply NO comparison. Like comparing McDonalds to filet mignon. Plus, I have a hard time imagining Haydn or other contemporary getting an award in some royal palace and Mozart interrupting with "I'm sorry but Haydn had one of the best piano concertos of all time."

Mozart was the first "Rock Star"
eahazell 1 year ago 50
@eahazell

You'll never be able to appreciate modern music fully unless you have some sort of appreciation for the foundation.
esthergraceellis 1 year ago
@eahazell so many people overlook the colossal influence classical music has had on metal, including me until i saw metal:a headbanger's journey, but when you know what you're looking for it's so obvious
bappabuiebappabuie1 1 year ago
@bappabuiebappabuie1 a good acquaintance of mine from high school in 1979 was a big rock listener. Always putting down the band and chorus. Imagine my surprise when a few years later (back when MTV actually played videos) I saw him as a drummer in a big hair band. (Not of my favorites either) So many rocker fans put down classical, jazz, blues etc. Yet almost every interview I've seen with some top metal bands they were in the school band. Some weren't most were. Most like all forms of music
eahazell 1 year ago
Kind of an ibid to my reply to bappabuiebappabuie1 But especially in the UK, so many of teh great musicians that came out of Britain were way into many forms of music and classically trained. It's a no brainer with progressive bands liek ELP, Yes etc. But Lemmy from Motorhead, Clapton, Winwood..all had classical training.

@eahazell please stop comparing geniuses like Mozart and Bach to today's vulgare and obscure "musicians". Damn, todays youth doesn't know talent when they see it.
Lity10 1 year ago
@Lity10 I disagree Lily. I grew up listening to jazz, rock, pop and metal...I was lucky to also gain an appreciation of classical, and by that I appreciate modern music even more. Today's musicians, especially those from the British invasion? were seeped in classical training and it shows. Keith Emerson? Ian Anderson? David Gilmore? Peter Gabriel? Elton John? To say that their contribution isn't significant is to be a snob. W/o a knowledge of classical their genius would have faltered and died.
eahazell 1 year ago
@Lity10 and really Lily, vulgare and obscure musicians? (maybe you ment obscene, but that too is a snobbish comment) If you can't see the beauty of todays music in it's own right, to appreciate it along with classical is rather closed minded. Sure todays pop music is crap, no depth but a rather blanket comment don't you think? And if you called any of those artists obscure shows a rather narrow mind set., or a real lack of understanding.
eahazell 1 year ago
@eahazell okay, obscure was a wrong word. "The beauty of todays music"? Erhm.. what? I'm not narrowminded, ive listened to all kinds of new music.... and it fucking sucks. Name one beautiful thing :O?
Lity10 1 year ago
@Lity10 Listen to any Clapton guitar solo, or Stevie Ray Vaughn.. if you cannot see the beauty in Claptons solo in "while my guitar gently weeps" then you just do not like modern music, you just don't or won't get it. If s , then I feel sorry for you. A Clapton Guitar solo can make me just as emotional as the 9th symphony... if you can't hear that then I really feel sorry for you. You ar etruely closed off and sheltered
