  • Well in French his Name is Gold.

  • days of straight sticks and as a result ....the back hand shot was so totally accurate... and man could he nail it ..

  • If he could have played in any decade, he would be the best player....period. 40's 50's, 60's, 80's, 90's, 00's,10's, 20's ...on and on he would go as the Greatest! Bobby Orr invented "The 5 tool player". Those that say Gretzky or Lemiuex are the best ever, have never seen Orr play. Even before, what should have been his prime years, he was better than those two. All you need is a solid 30 minute video on 'some' of Orr's best, and anyone would agree. And that's only scratching the surface.

  • i laugh at people who says that gretzky is better than orr. lol!

  • HOw the hell could you not let this audio go through....stupid copywrite...

  • Simply Bobby AWE!

  • @BillieBobSmith - incorrect stats....and Stats tell only part of the story. If you knew hockey, you'd know this.

  • At the 47 second mark, when Orr takes off with the puck, that brief clip, at least to me, really shows how fast he played the game, and what it was like playing against him. Wow. Like someone said, he had 6 speeds of fast. That's the game being played at the highest level, those couple of seconds shows it all.

  • Allright,,heres the truth: Orr had a botched surgery on his knee in 68-69 which left him bone on bone..Notice how much faster he was than everyone else in the league, even with one knee...in 72,he hurt his other knee...A couple of years later,Bill Barber cheap shotted Orr again..Bobby put up a 46 goal 93 assist and +125 season with absolutely no wheels!!!

  • @atgn70 one of the more shameful aspects of the NHL at the time of Orr were all the deliberate attempts to go after his knees. Another dismal aspect was the way Boston management contributed to shortening his career by leaving him on the ice for long periods of ice time after the game was already in the bag, and of course this left Bobby Orr just that much more vulnerable to the cheap shots.

  • This audio nonsense is disgraceful and disrupting an otherwise delightful evening on YouTube which I would like to be having.

Why are you trying to ruin a fantastic medium with a treasured history like that?

  • I'm 38 years old & I saw Gretzky play almost his whole career, & Lemieux as well. They each did things that didn't seem possible. To me Orr, Gretz, & Mario are the three best players hockey's ever seen. You can look at Gretz & Mario, & if you really want to scrutinize you can find a weakness in their game (which are nothing compared to their strengths), but in the case of Orr you have a player that does EVERYTHING better than anyone & has nothing even resembling a weakness. Orr is the greatest.

  • @BillieBobSmith Gretzky's line let in just about the same amount.

  • @BillieBobSmith WRONG AGAIN. Orr is the all time plus minus leader. Robinson's season average is far less than Orr's. Gretzky's is 1/3rd that of Orr ! Orr obliterates any and all players in the PLUS MINUS department. Because of Orr---the Bruins basically started every game up 2 - 0.

  • @BillieBobSmith Orr was on the ice for more goals scored per game per shift for his Bruins than Gretzky was. Orr was also on the ice for less goals scored against his team than Gretzky was for the Oilers. You could spend the rest of your life searching YOUTUNE for a video of Gretzky giving a poke check. When you dont have the puck, everyone is playing defense. It happens to be 50% of the game. Orr was master at both ends.

  • @BillieBobSmith

    STFU

  • @BillieBobSmith Is this the same season that a goalie on the Oilers team got the season (82 games) equivalent of 25 points?? Talk about crushing an all time record...if a goalie can get 14 pts in 45 games...what kind of league/conference was this...Yikes. Tissue paper defense, gogo 80's in the wild wild west. I hear Lanny scored 66 one year and Bernie go 152 pts...good thing 99 was able to pad those stats and pass Gordie and Hull his last season....

  • @BillieBobSmith Robinson was still posting + numbers on that crap Kings team...hmmmm. Gretzky...not so much. Robinson played the whole game..both ends of the ice. That is why his +/- ratio is second best to the greatest player ever...who you say, the one who's ratio is almost triple that of Gretzky's and almost double Robinson...Mr. Robert Gordon Orr...you can call him Bobby.

  • Is it true that Bobby had a higher +/- during this period and a much higher gf-ga ratio?? Is it true that even in Gretzky's best season during the tissue paper defense of the go go 80's in the wild wild west division....that Orr's gf ratios while on the ice were higher than 99's..how is that even possible. And we won't even go into goals against ratios, 99 has proven and set the all time record for that one. What happens on the ice...the whole picture, WHO is the greatest...ORR, and only ORR!

  • Hey Knobster..teach away my friend..teach away. Oh, thanks for the profanity laced personal message you sent to me..classy.

You mentioned that 99 was almost always in + territory..not true. Seven years of - numbers. -86 his last eight years..wow, embarrassing..no wonder he got traded around like a rented mule. Please explain how Wayne has the record..and I mean record..for most goal against while on the ice??

Teach me please great hockey master..I bow before your immense hockey knowledge.

  • @BillieBobSmith

"everyone agrees that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest player of all time, and Bobby Orr isn't" ?

    Free advice, BillieBob:

    Consider upgrading your education.

    Find solutions for your hostility.

Refrain from using foul language - it diminishes what little credibility you have here

  • @BillieBobSmith

It seems you have an attitude problem, BillieBob.

Frankly, I don't care what Sports Illustrated thinks.. and even less what you think

  • For a seccond I thought oar was #9. So many greats... too many numbers.

  • Lets just remember that if there wasnt such a code in the NHL about rookies winning the norris trophy. Bobby would have won it 9 out of the 10 seasons instead of winning it 8 times. That would mean Gretzky in his 20 years of playing would have to be considered the NHL's top forward 18/20 years just to even be considered the best hockey player to play the game.

  • @MrFergie1972 Gretzky won the Hart Trophy 9 of his first 10 years in the NHL. I'm not trying to diss Bobby Orr, but do you honestly believe he would have won the Norris Trophy, or even the Hart Trophy, 18 times if he had played 20 years?

  • I'll listen to the "Gretzky was the Greatest" argument as soon as he starts winning Selke awards as the NHL's best defensive forward. Remember, Orr won MVP's and Norris Trophies (best defenseman), and scoring titles. The Great One never won anything for his defense. Arguments????

  • @juiceman1965 Randy Carlyle won the Norris Trophy as a -16. Paul Coffey won it 3 times. Brian Leetch won it twice. You want to tell me these were great defensive players???? The Norris Trophy goes to the best defenceman, not the best defensive defenceman.

  • Comment removed

  • Who cares what 'kid commentators' think -ask people who actually followed the careers of the great players. You find that Orr comes out ahead of everybody.

I've seen em all, every great player from the mid-sixties to present. There's zero doubt in my mind that Bobby Orr was the greatest hockey player the world has seen.

[No, kiddies .. it wasn't Gretzky. Gretzky doesn't even rank]

  • it just takes 1 to fuck up a video

  • WMG ruining peoples vidz wtf ....assholes!

  • WMG facists

  • Leafy, you mean Mike Weaver right?

  • No, best defenceman of all time is Andy Wozniewski

  • You said it. I saw the Oilers live in Edmonton, must have been 1983, versus the great Islanders dynasty team. Oilers lost 6-4 (at home)and I certainly didn't even notice Gretzky on the ice. The more you see these clips of Orr...the crisp passing, bullet shot, the skating!...the team play, sacrificing his face to block a shot...the shorthanded goals....and then watch him fight....he even led his team one year in penalty minutes. Can we end this debate once and for all? It's Bobby Orr.

  • @derekdoesntlikeyou Some people just don't get it!! You're correct!! Bobby is the best there ever was!!

  • Seeing is believing. Orr was the best ever. No doubt.

  • best ever not grezty

  • Bobby Orr was an incredible player! My all-time favorite (and I'm not a Bruins fan). It's just unfortunate that knee injuries shortened his career.

  • Cam Neely = Gordy Howe (how he played) Samuelsson owes the NHL an apology for robbing us of more Neely

  • In Gretz' last 8 years he plyed for horrible teams that had sieves for goalies. -86.

    You lack understanding

  • Do I lack understanding, or do I have perspective. I watched hundreds..hundreds of Gretzky games live and on tv. He was great..one of the greatest on offense. His defense was horrid. His defensive face-off skills were average at best. He never went into a corner and didn't hit anyone..ever. We all know that there was a don't plaster Gretzky policy. As good as he was at evading a hit...come on. Only two vids on youtube of him getting hit..both times it looks like he is about to die.

  • Here is a stat for you with 99 the Oilers averaged 306 goals against for 9 seasons. With LA (drop the 84 game season to 80, grow the 48 game season to 80 using %, and count the last season with LA as if he played all 80, the gaa average improved after he left..so I am helping this stat in his favor) in 8 seasons LA averaged 306.25..don't forget Fuhr couldn't make this team..wow the goalies were sieves..or Gretzky's two way play sucked. You tell me. I watched it happen with my very own eyes!

  • Give it up already. I watched both of them play. Comparing a D man to a Forward is moronic. Different jobs, different demands. go kiss Don Cherry on the cheek why don't ya?

  • Congrats..we both watched them play. You have yet to counter the facts that I have laid out clearly. Different eras/positios..yes. Both favour Gretzky..yet Orr still ends up dominating statistically and visually on ice. Gretzky is my 3rd fav. player..in his prime he was amazing, however, he was no Orr. How many games of these two did you actually watch. I never saw Orr live..saw a few dozen games on tv..dozens more on video. Saw Gretzky live more than a dozen times and hundreds (over 500) on tv

  • I am amazed you forgot to tell me about L.A. ousting the Oil in '82. Yeah I seen Orr live and several times on the tube. Apples and Oranges here.

Put them both on the same team, add Cam Neely and Martin B in net... you got a great core

  • they scored 448 in one season. = Entertaining

  • The gogo 80's in the wild wild west was totally entertaining. At this point in his career Gretzky was a threat at all times while on the ice (then again even Fuhr got 25 pts as a goalie this season..pro-rated to 80 games..14pts in 45gms) Even this season..Gretzky comes no where near Orr in on ice dominance. 1.55 while on ice ppg for the season. Orr had a 1.46 career average, his best was 2.22..wow!!

  • Gretzky's career sagged after he was in L.A., when dirty s.o.b. Gary Suter ran him into the boards from behind, causing a back injury. After that, wayne was mediocre, only getting around 140 points a season.

  • The real stat..the one that wins games..the only stat that truly counts is this. While you are on the ice who scores and how much. While on the ice Gretzky has 3520 goals for 2285 against..a game average of .83 (1487 games). Orr has tgf of 1651 and tga of 781 for a 1.46 per game average (596 games, 66/67 n/a). Much of Gretzky's career he was a detriment to his team if there was no power play,Orr's numbers never came close to being inverted..Gretzky was horrid as a 2 way player for over 10 years

  • You're on drugs. Orr and Gretzky are on their own planet. Sakic, Lemieux and all are with us here on Earth.

Boston was a very D oriented team, and Edmonton would just as soon beat you 8-4 as 3-1. Calling him a detriment to his team is a testimoney to your stupidity. Are you realted to Stan Fischler? He is the idiot Sports Writer for THN who once claimed that the Oilers would never win a Cup with Gretzky.

  • Hey sparwood8..how is it going? You are the dude who says McSorry is a top 5 dman of all time..OK now that we have a drug induced reference. Ha what a joke. Now regarding "the above average one" his last 12 years..if it wasn't for the power play..most of these years your hero ran negative numbers. Don't take my word for it..go look it up. Gretzky is my 3rd fav player of all time. I watched hundreds of his games..dozens live. He was awesome in many ways. He was horrid on defense..-86 last 8 years

  • McSorley was a nightmare to play against. You can't have Orr-Coffey, Bourque-Lidstrom,

Niedermayer-Laperriere... b/cause you need misery for the other team, so you go with Stevens, Robinson, and your NUMBER 5 AND NUMBER 6 D men are McSorley, and Chelios

So now you know what I meant by best ever No. five D man.

    Here is an example of number 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 D men: Robinson-Orr STEVENS-Niedermayer CHELIOS-MCSORLEY

The upper case ones are them who punish you and/or drive you crazy

  • dumb1972 is a self proclaimed genius who goes on Orr sites just to piss us off..he gets many of his facts wrong..will never admit when he is wrong..his life is youtube..4+ hours a day for over 18 months..pissing people off.

I am the self-proclaimed smartest guy on Youtube. Whether the topic be sports or politics I provide an insight and wit that most boobs just can't handle.

  • Don Cherry coached Bobby Orr in 74-75. That was Orrs last full season with the Bruins and had 46 goals, including 4 hat tricks, 2 of them against the garbage Capitals.

  • Phenom

  • orr will always be better than anyone ever-including gretzky hands down!

  • The truth is that Gretz would have been great in any era because of the way he thought the game. Where as Bobby was great because of his physical tools. In a world where off-ice training and skating clinics have closed the gap between the elite and the pluggers I think that Bobby wouldn't have been the phenom that he was in 60's and eary 70's. I think it's safe to say that Bobby would have been pretty good but not the icon. Grez, on the other hand, would have still re-written the recordbook.

  • Are you serious? Orr had knee problems from his second season on & unbeleivably would have been even more incredible without the injury that ultimatly caused him to retire at just 29!Its what my eyes told me. Orr would have been THE best in any era sorry to tell you. And Orr could do it all. Gretzky could score but we all know could not measure up to Orr in skating ability, physical ability and of course in the defensive aspect of the game. To be called the best you have to be the best like Orr!

  • Your missing the point. Grezky's greatest asset was the way that he thought the game and it is what seperated him from his peers. Then, if you introduce his unique mind to any other era, coupled with that era's poorer skill set, and you have The Great One being even better than he was in the 80's and 90's. Orr's ability was only physical, introduce him to peers who were physically superior to those he played against in the 60's and 70's, and he wouldn't have excelled to the same degree.

  • The connectivity, evolution of the game and respective peer groups is what makes Gretzky's legacy greater than Orr's. We haven't even taken into account Grezky's salesmanship of the game. Clearly, there is only one choice as to who was the most influential in the sport. Orr didn't have the charisma or social skill that Wayne started to develop while in his pee wee years. Orr would have been eaten alive by the media and fan expectation of the 80's and 90's. Wayne excelled in it, case closed.

  • ORR revolutionized the sport! You my friend are not taking into account what orr truly meant to the game. He had vision. It was like he had eyes behind his head. Orr did have the charisma thats where you are wrong. gretzky manged to get the stats and pile them up in record form but if you ask hockey people which one they would start a team with....90% of people with knowledge of th egame would take Orr over Gretzky! Orr could make others around him better & was truly ahead of his time!

  • Where was Bobby's vision when he lost his knees? His decay as a player is illustrates that all he brought to the game was a elite level skating stride and willingness to rush the puck. That hardly qualifies him as a player with great vision. Bobby's abilities were purely physical while Gretzky's tools eminated from his mind, body and spirit. No one has ever loved the game and then translated it to the fans like Gretzky did. Orr, though I'm sure a nice guy, was an introverted personality.

  • Steven Brunt's book, Searching for Bobby Orr, makes Bobby's social inadequacies quite evident. During Orr's initial years in the league his interviews spoke to his inability to deal with the scope of his popularity. Bobby wasn't a media-guy, he wasn't an attention seeker. He was a hockey player and there is nothing wrong with that. However, his ineptness in the public realm is just another reason why Gretzky's legacy is far more important to the league and game in general.

  • I am not talking about legacy.....I think your right about gretzky in that aspect. I am talking about who was THE greater hockey player pure & simple. You seem to give no credit to Orr's overall greatness. Maybe you are too young to have seen him play. Please watch these videos, and I know you will end up saying Orr was THE greatest player on pure talent who ever laced up a pair of skates! The things he did on the ice were simply amazing & still mindbending!

  • It appears you have ignored my contention that Orr's physical skills in the 60's and 70's were plyed against inferior competition compared to the people Gretzky competed against. Orr's greatness was measured against a peer group that didn't train prior to training camp. Their lower fitness level and average skating ability is what helped Orr to dominate his era. Let's not forget the differences in team play and defensive tactics. The trap would feast upon Bobby's turnovers.

  • The difference between Orr and Gretzky is one of the great debates in hockey. The Hockey News contended that Wayne's ability to see and think the game, coupled with the fact that he played in a tougher, more competitive era, is why he should be considered the greatest. At 17 years of age the skinny kid took the pro world by storm. He competed against grown men and made them look silly. People have forgotten about Wayne's skill set because of the mastery of his creativity.

  • The most important factor in this debate is the quality of the opposition that these two shining stars faced. During Orr's era there were defensemen who couldn't turn to the outside. There were wingers who were couldn't skate backwards. There were coaches who told their team to just go out there and give it their best with minimal strategy. The fitness levels in Orr's period of excellence where comperable to the elite pick-up, shinny player of the day. They were a weak peer group.

  • That weak peer group helped to make Orr look better than he really was. Now, don't get me wrong, he wasn't exactly a sack of potatos but his legacy is somewhat overrated because of the competition he faced. Gretz, on the other hand, competed against two eras of play. In the 80's and early 90's he faced them as a young man and was cleary the class of the league. He dominated that period like no one has ever dominated, even Orr. The later part of his career was against a different NHL.

  • The NHL that Gretzky faced in the mid to late 90's was far more complicated than anything he had ever seen before. It was a league that focused upon the control of space and player disapline. Gone were the days of the quick-strike and freelancing that Gretzky and Orr made their names on. Additionally, the athletic gap between the third/fourth liners and the stars had narrowed and this eliminated the mismatches that helped both Orr and Gretzky turn the hockey world on it's ear.

  • The problem with those who grew up watching Orr waltz through his opposition is that Orr made it look so easy. Well, in reality, it was rather easy for someone with Bobby's natural explosiveness and stride. Orr didn't compete against equals while Gretzky often competed with players who were physically superior to him. Orr fans have to expand the scope that they regard this debate with in order to truly understand it. However, I suppose it's easy to be delusional in the nursing home.

  • Enough of your ridiculous remarks it is now bordering on the rude & there is no need for it!

  • Sounds like you can't defend your point any more. Either that or maybe I've changed your mind, eh?

    I win... again.

  • listen you obnoxious clown.....Orr was the better player. You just cant accept the truth & are inventing things to support a rather weak argument. When Orr first started their was just 6 teams & only 12 when he played. gretzky played as the league watered its product to the point it became a joke & their were players who had no right being in the league. So dont talk about level of competition, you lose big in that one. If you dont think Orr would have beeb great in any era...you are SOMISTAKEN!

  • Oh, I would take ORR over gretzky in any game they played one-on-one. Orr could do it all & obviously gretzky couldn't play defense!

  • I'm sure Bobby would look great in a one-on-one competition. However, the game is played with teammates and no one ever utilized his teammates like Gretz did. Gretz made the people around him better than they ever had a right to be. Then, when coupled with truly elite players, he brought them to another level. Orr was not that type of creator. Bobby was a spectacular rush or a great goal but when you consider the level of competition he faced it just doesn't mean as much.

  • I was going for the evil clown persona... close enough I guess.

The six and twelve team league arguement is a good one if you ignore the fact that those teams didn't access the talent that existed in Europe and Scandinavia. Gretzky competed against the best the world had to offer while Bobby didn't. The 76 Canada Cup is the only euro-competition to judge Bobby against and that is foolish at best. The sample size is just too small. Gretz faced the best and is still considered the best.

  • Please, while I disagree with you in the Orr vs Gretzky remark. When you search Bobby Orr click the first video and look at the brutal argument that these guys are trying to put up against me. Saying today's game is a joke. Ignorant.

  • I watched BOTH players and 99 = much > than 4, and Bobby Orr will be the first to tell you that, and besides... One is a D the other a C.

  • Actually Orr wouldn't tell us that..what he would tell us IS..Lemieux is the best he had ever seen..the reason he would say this is because..he actually said it many times.
