  • I came here from Minecraft ^.^

  • you ppl arguing about occy an lohnro are fools, enjoy what you witnessed, occy was a champ.beating horses like saintly, filante, our marscay, juggler,do i need go on???than you have lohnro, beats sunline easily, who cares whos better, just be happy you saw it ffs

  • Hey Guys,

    Settle down.

We're talking about a father and son and two of the best ever.

Join forces and celebrate them both.

  • I don't believe there was much between OCTAGONAL and KINGSTON TOWN as 3yr olds.

KT won six G1's while Octagonal won five G1's. Both failed their attempts to win both the Caulfield Guineas and the VRC Derby.

Both backed up two weeks in a row to win a G1 treble (Rosehill Guineas, Tancred/Mercedes, AJC Derby)

KT also won G1 races the AJC Spring Champ, Sydney Cup, QLD Derby

Occy also won G1 races Cox Plate + Canterbury Guineas

Tulloch probably the only 3yr old in their class.

  • @blackmourning11 As 3yo's, you hit it perfectly BM

  • Occy also should have won the 95 Golden Slipper. watch?v=VYjU4n8po2E

  • hmmmm, I think when Lee said he was under-rated, gotta say I was one of em, Just remembered him as a Vic. Derby winner. He raced against some very good horses, with distinction, short memory, selective memory or bad memory. Not sure. Maybe didn't pay enough attention.

  • occy or lonhro, bit like wich came first chicken or the egg, does it matter, both true champs, loved them both as did my wallet, lol, not bad sires either, shame about a few off there brothers an injuries, nielo wasnt bad,an mouwad was gunna be special

  • Not mention the crap ride that cost him the VRC Derby as well...

  • Never would have beaten the Dane, if you watch the race again, you'll see Dye doesn't really go for NLD until the 100m, Octagonal makes up very little ground from thereon in.

  • You forget he beat a Dual Cox plate Champion called Sunline & gave her a three length start over 2000m at Caulfield,He also beat a Caulfield cup horse called Mummify & Private steer,Shogun Lodge,Viscount,Grand Armee,he raced against what was around but had an international time rating higher than Octagonal.

  • Mate, you've babbled on about Lonhro winning more Gr1 race, but forget he raced on longer than Occy.

Occy was retired at the end of his 4yo season, Lonhro raced until the end of his 5yo season.

Here's the comparison at the same stages of their careers at the end of their 4yo season

    Octagonal 28 starts for 10 Gr1 wins (36%)

    Lonhro 24 starts for 6 Gr1 wins (25%)

Overall Lonhro's Gr1% is still lower.

    35 starts for 11 Gr1 wins (31%)

    Quality not quantity.

You need to watch this vid closer

  • @tigerrish Are you aware, Tigerrish, that Lonhro's strike rate in Group One races (11 wins from 17 starts) was higher than Octagonal's (10 wins from 19 starts)?

  • @tigerrish The percentages you are calculating are ridiculous because they don't take into account that 'at the same stage' Octagonal had contested 19 Group One races to Lonhro's 10 (principally due to Lonhro contracting a virus and missing all the Group Ones that a horse would normally contest as an autumn three-year-old). The fact is, Lonhro's winning strike-rate in Group One races 'at the same stage' (60%) is higher than Octagonal's (52%).

  • sunline was a great miler. not so much further than a mile.

  • @MANSURFER1 he also consistently beat saintly who as we know did the double and was a very strong horse.

  • HA HA Talk to Darley & ask them about Occy he is washed up as no one is interested in him as a stallion as for Lonhro he has no less than 59 winners this season,As i said Lonhro had a better turn of foot & won convincingly unlike Occy who fell in everytime,Even Darren Beadman said when asked Lonhro was the better horse as for your Cox Plate & Doncaster both races it rained just before the race & he did not like the tracks,Unlike Flemington where he was unbeaten in every run he had there.

  • Who cares about their ability as sires, Im talking about on the track. The only top shelf race that Lonhro won was the Aust Cup, the rest were lead up WFA races and none of them except the Aust Cup, were million dollar races. Occy won the Derby, Bwm (2) Cox Plate and Aust Cup, all million dollar races.

Quality, not quantity and Lonhro never had to deal with the best crop of 3yo's we have probably ever seen. Occy did things that only champions have been able to do, Lonhro never did

  • Who cares about there ability as sires?Thats what there remembered for ability to produce the next Champion as dont hear much talk on Octagonal nowdays that Darley has basically retired him,its all Lonhro & how his young ones are winning races, yes Octagonal was a Champion for sure but the talk nowdays is Lonhro.

  • caulfield guineas is also a million dollar race

    just to clear that up

  • Best thing about the BIG O was Lonhro!

  • Lonhro will always live in the shadow of his father.

Octagonal did things Lonhro couldnt and he beat a range of super stars that his son didnt.

Lonhro was a great WFA horse, his dad was a champion.

  • Lonhro does not live in the Shadow of his Father as he had a better turn of foot won more Group 1's & his prodgeny win races as i said the best thing about the Big O was Lonhro,But wait as there is another full Brother to Lonhro called "EIGHTO" & has GP1 Winner stamped allover him.

  • Mate, Lonhro was an outstanding WFA horse, but he failed in several big races, Cox Plate twice and Doncaster. Octagonal won the Cox, the Merc/Bmw the best WFA staying race in the country, twice. And beat the best Derby field we've seen in decades.

Octagonal won Gr1 races in every season he competed, Lonhro didnt. Octagonal won Gr1 open races at 3yo, Lonhro didnt.

Winning more Gr1 races doesnt mean one is better, winning the big races does. Occy won the big ones, Lonhro didnt.

  • You must have over looked the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas & 4 Group 2s that Lonhro won when he was 3yr old,then at 4yrs he won 5 Group1 & 3 Group2 & at 5yrs 5 Group1s & 1 Group2,Not to mention international rating of 128 & he won as a 2yr old Group3 Caulfeild where was occy at 2yrs?

  • Are you kidding, "where was Octagonal at 2yrs" Are you stupid or what, he won the Gr1 Sires and Gr2 Todman as well as going down a nose in the Slipper. And no I didnt over look Lonhro's Guineas win, I said he never won an Open class race at 3yrs. The Guineas isnt an open race, but the Cox Plate and Bwm are and they're the races Occy won at 3yrs. You made excuse for Lonhro getting beaten in some races, Occy never needed an excuse for getting beaten.

  • Lonhro won one Gr1 race as a 3yo, Octagonal won 5 Gr1 races at the same age.

  • THE ONLY HORSE TO WIN A GROUP 1 ON EVERY TRACK HE RACED ON . randwick-derby, rosehill-mercedes, canterbury-cant guiness,warwick farm-chipping norton, money valley-cox plate, flemington-aust cup, caulfield-underwood stakes

  • It's an amazing record isn't it!

Me and my mate were at Rosehill for his first start as a 2 year old. My mate said he was supposed to be pretty good on exposed barrier trail form. Alas, we thought we found some on pacers to beat him? He flashed home and saluted at 9/2 with Grant Cooksley onboard. My mate turned to me and sarcastically said " he's pretty good."

Darren Beadman is a great jockey, but tactically he rode shockers on Occy and Lonhro at their last runs in Sydney before retirement.

  • Saintly is regarded by many as the better horse. But these people should rate them from 2 year olds and upwards. Saintly wasn't in the picture as a 2 year old, while Octagonal was a good thing beaten in the Slipper coming from near last. Octagonal owned Saintly for the majority of their match races in the big Group 1's. And Occy had the hurdle of being a stallion while Saintly was a gelding. If Saintly was " the horse from heaven," then Octagonal " sat on the throne in heaven. "

  • a horse like octagonal,to get beaten in the slipper by a head and comes out and done what he did, explains he won the slipper.

  • Thanks for putting this up.

Big O not in the highest company tho...

  • You like to name a better credentialed 3 year old than him, other than Kingston Town........

  • yeah they actually reckon that the year big O was a 3yr old was one of the greatest if not the greatest crops australian racing has ever seen... it hasnt been close to matched since

  • As a 3yo he towelled up Saintly who had won the Aust Cup at 3 and went on to win the Cox Plate and Melb Cup. Filante who went on to win the Epsom and finish 2nd twice in the Cox. Nothin Leica Dane who won the VRC Derby and 2nd in the Melb Cup at 3. He also beat Count Chivas who finished 2nd in the Cup and won a host of races. Add Juggler to the list who was a great WFA horse too.

Not in the highest company hey?...lol

  • the besT ever

  • hey fat man worked for clarrie, strategic was better at 1200m only i rode him also.and won a fortune on his first start,do you remember lester piggot comeing second to strategic at rosehill?i guess not yu fat fucking strapper.

  • craig williams a good jockey?failed badly in the uk.got lost and judgeing a horse.great when he goes around in circles.

  • hey guys why don't u believe it

  • the guy yu think was mick evans in his midweek trials was me and he had 2,then grant took over,if yu worked for clarry you was a fat strapper and ask sean steppards who did work for clarry not walk around horses after we rode them yu fucking idiot.

  • Hehe pj don't be angry. Not worth it :)

  • hey get it right octagonal ran 1200m at randwick his first start, mick didnt ride him on his barrier trial grant cooksley did,all i did was ride his first 2 jump out trials.

  • bullshit ask mick evans or some guys who worked at crown lodge,i gave octagonal his first 2 jump outs at warwick farm, why would i lie,i was mates with a guy from clarry connors stable, called sean think he won the lotto but thats another story, his brother also both decent guys,i rode strategic also.they were both in the same barn

  • lonro is his foal or is it the other way around

  • Octagonal sired Lonhro

  • yeah i new that

has lonhro had any foals yet?

is ogtaganal dead?or is he still siring

  • If you knew why did you ask?

Octagonal is alive and well. Lonhro has a crop of 2yo racing this season, Black Minx is so far the stand out but they will get better as they get older.

  • Well i didnt know which one was which but yeah

  • blackmourning. You are right. The next generation soon forgets. I can remember the old guys going on about Gloaming and Nightmatch. Who mentions them now? People only remember the greats like Red Rum and Man O' War.

  • Gloaming still has the best winning strike rate for a Group 1 winning horse, (10 start min.) HORSE-STARTS-WINS-G1's-WIN% Gloaming 67/57 (18) 85% Ajax* 46/36 (18) 78% Carbine* 43/33 (24) 77% Lonhro* 35/26 (11) 74% Phar Lap 51/37 (21) 73% Kingston Town 41/30 (14) 73% Bernborough 38/26 (9) 68% Tulloch* 53/36 (23) 68% Sunline** 48/32 (13) 67%
  • *Ajax, Carbine, Lonhro and Tulloch raced as colts/entires.

**Sunline is the only mare in the champion group.

Gloaming, Phar Lap, Kingston Town and Bernborough raced as geldings.

  • what about makybe diva she is a great mare

  • john hawkes said to me keep him back as i was drawn 8 of 8 i did he owned on the turn i pressed the button he flew.

as for the groom of octaganol the first day he came from nz i told the strapper this horse will be a legend and asked pete snowdan to keep me on the horse

  • u must be mick evans then, cause i worked for clarry conners who has stables near crown lodge , and mick did the work on him , i even remember his first start a midweek a warwick farm where mick rode him then after that Grant Cooksley took over for the rest of his 2yo campaign.

And as a 2yo the stable didnt rate him that highly, Strategic and Donar where both rated better colts than he was but that soon changed.

So stop lying, you didnt ride him

  • great post i rode octagonal in his first 2 barrier trials and all his 2year old campaign,at warwick farm

  • mate stop lying , mick evans rode him his first start and done all work with him, after that 1st start(a midweek a warwick farm) Grant cooksley then took over for the rest of his 2yo campaign.

I work in the industry and know that you are lying

  • it won by a half length fuck iam good

  • i have a certainty in the fourth race at melbourne on saturday the 12th of jan 2008. race 4 number 2 WILL atleast run a place if not win if this is not the case then the horse will be scratched.

  • Tomorrow night (Monday 7:30) on Legends of Racing, Brian Martin interviews John Hawkes.

Sure to be a fair bit about OCTAGONAL and Lonhro.

  • Octagonals Amazing 2yr/3yr old Record

    16 starts- 10 Wins- 5 seconds- 1 third (6 G1 wins)

    Octagonal's 2yr Old record:

    Won 1100m Open

    Won 1200m G2

    2nd 1200m G1 Golden Slipper

    Won 1400m G1 Sires Produce

    2nd 1600m G1 Champagne Stks

  • Weird .. if you saw him race as a 3 or 4 year old , you wouldn't for a second ever think that he had ran 2nd in the slipper.

Such an honest horse , he wasnt blessed with the ability to be great , he made himself great

  • I cant remember a horse ever having the wraps put on it like they were with this guy before he'd even stepped out. And he delived from day one.

We all appreciate just how good he was in every year, but I think the next generation will be in awe of what he achieved. In the future when they talk of 3yr old accomplishments, his name will always be the first mentioned and his entire record will continue to be on show. And the records of his opponents are a testament to his greatness as well.

  • Unfortunately I think the next generation will quickly forget about what Octagonal done as a 3yr old.

Consider that all the bullshit regarding Makybe Diva was centered around "as good as Phar Lap"

What about Tulloch? What he done as a 3yr old was extraordinary yet ask all these young Makybe freaks what races he won and they couldn't tell you.

The other important factor regarding Octagonal and Tulloch was that they were both entires.

  • Octagonal's 3yr old career record: 2nd 1200m G3 Won 1300m Listed Won 1400m G3 3rd 1600 G1 Caulfield Guineas Won 2040m G1 Cox Plate 2nd 2500m G1 VRC Derby 2nd 1400m G2 Won 1900 G1 Cant. Guineas Won 2000m G1 Rosehill Guineas Won 2400m G1 BMW Classic Won 2400m AJC Derby
  • If you take out his spring 4yr old season, then has an impeccable record.

  • This brother Mouawad had loads of ability to, he won the Futurity Stakes as a 3yr and was retired early with 6 from 7 record I think it was? But he turned out to be firing blanks. I always thought he was alot more brilliant than Occy, shame he was retired so early.

  • Whatever happen Mouawad , Word on the street is that he was sold to Japan to race but didn't produce his old form and was sent to a slaughterhouse ... any truth to this ?

He was an extremely gifted horserace though , no telling how good he could of been.

  • Thats about as much as I know too, he got sold after he was found to be shooting blanks and after that I have no idea. blackmourning11 might know

  • FUCK MOUAWAD

had him in a doncaster x slipper double with guineas only for him to be scratched race morning. all in with bookies = 0.

CHINA not japan then ended up in some asian porn movie where cross breeding was never an issue...

  • hahaha ill pay that one

  • Cox Plate tip Mr.Tiger?

  • I like Efficient and El Segundo.

    Others at the meeting are:

    Catalan Bay

    El Mandon

    Bantry Bay (EW)

  • Oh yeah, keep an eye on Blessed. If the market moves are favourable in Victoria then jump on.

    Dark whispers with this one.

  • He's still a bit of a mystery Efficient isnt he, if he races up to his ability he should bolt in. Then again, if they all race up to there true ability's then we'd have 5-6 hitting the line at once.

At least we'll be in for some good theatre again, like always.

  • What do you think of that Mr.Tiger?

The Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup winner in the one post.

Could have a 35/1 Oaks winner too.

  • You will forgive me if my mind is on other things............

  • Id want better than that..........

  • Nice tipping tho, you could have told me about the Emirates winner too?! Nice to have a slice of the first four in that one!

  • Its a toughy this year, could pick 3-4 and still not get it. For me: El Segundo and Haradasun, but without over confidence.

I think it'll be a cracker in the Moir too, cant split the 2 so im having a hefty quinella. (thats if IAS is on song this week!)

    Good Luck

  • Reshuffles in a boilover

  • Hahahaha, wanna have a big kettle I reckon!

  • Big Day = Top Jockeys

    Newitt

    Nikolic

    Oliver

    Williams

    Arnold

  • A good days punting yesterday.

You see the Cup or Derby winner? Impressed with Marching.

An exellent ride by Nolan on El Segundo had him right where he should have and made his move at the right time.

Average ride by Katsidis on Gold Edition, went way to slow early on and was a sitting duck, dont know whether she would have won anyway, but he gave Miss Andretti every chance to beat her.

  • All your racing videos are outstanding...

Thanks for bringing a tear to my eye on too many occasions tronight.

  • How good was the ride on Occy in the Chipping Norton . . . if he didnt go when he did , juggler would of won as simple as that. Im not the biggest fan of Shayne Dye but he has always been a great judge of speed and never hesitates , always backs his judgement.

  • Too true mate, he would have been hammered if Dye had of stayed quiet. Dont think too many were great fans of Dye, but to his credit he did his homework on his rides and won alot of races that on face value he should have lost. Encounter and Tie The Knot were good eg: no one else could have ridden them to the wins he did.

  • Don't know if you'll get this in time but today at Bendigo the Hawkes stable have a very nice 2yr old in PORTILO.

If you can get each way odds I think you'll cash in big time.

  • Actually it's PORTILLO.

Out of Snowdrift making it a half sister to Snowland. Hopefully not much has been mentioned about it but I know as fact they expect it to win.

  • I'll look it up, thanks

  • I was at the Farm that day... i can remember thinking "what the hell is Dye playing at??!!" as Occy took off around the 800 mark but he obviously knew what he was doing. Great ride.

    Great video mate... more please.

  • Thanks Tiger.

Been looking for something on Occy and this is a good one.

  • Thanks. Didnt that last 100 in the Aust Cup look not too much diff to Lonhro? And a pretty hot field too.

Im still in awe of that performance in the Chipping Norton Stk, poor Juggler bumped into some good ones along the way didnt he?

  • I dont rate him as a brilliant horse but as he said , octagonal had an enormous will to win which is why im a fan of him.

Hes been a major dissapointment at stud though . . can someone name a group winner hes had other than lonhro or Niello ?

  • Actually Octagonal is one of Australia's greatest ever 3yr olds.

He won 4 Group 1 races in 5 weeks as we saw here.

Some of his Group winning progeny are Spinney, Hosannah, Omens, Jeremaid, Boreale while Laverock and Suntagonal are Group 1 winners overseas.

Always hard when the best mares are sent to sprinting stallions.

  • Its highly unlikely his 3yr season will ever be done again and he beat some above average 3yr too.

Agree with the sentiments about where the mares go, it does make it hard for stallions like him to get the best when there's a quick buck in young and fast

  • I was pissed off when the canned the CANterbury Guineas.

Like in the USA, it took a Champion to win three Group 1s at different tracks over different distance (1900m, 2000m, 2400m) so hard considering the dynamics of each track.

The majority of mares sent to Octagonal these days are from Woodlands itself.

  • Your right, it takes something away from the treble now.

I did get your tip a bit late, luckily :) But cheers for that. Wouldnt have mattered, was unable to get into my iasbet account on Sat anyway. And saved my money on trying the Caulf Cup fav for nothing.

Was impressed with Purple Moon tho, great run.

  • Had a tiny something on Purple Moon to win $200.

Really wanted to take on Maldivian with Douro Valley and Eskimo Queen.?.?.?

Think Efficient could come out and win both Cox Plate + Melbourne Cup unless no speed in Cox Plate then like El Segundo.

  • Ive taken a liking to Purple Moon, I liked the way he got to the line and the run will do him good.

Not so sure about Efficient, never know tho. Im with you on El Segundo, he will be coming home hard and he handles the valley. Would have liked him to be going a lil better, but thats seems to be the case with alot of them.
