he played dublin last night, all the old pub rockers and punks et el there.blew the place apart.2 encores.what a night-even for 5 old bodz like us.canvey island rules
Wilko is my favorite guitar player, I ripped him off for years and didn't even know I was doing it until I discovered Dr. Feelgood a few years ago and I was like wow this is where that sound came from! Fenders!!!
I think the main reason he's not on tv is that he gigs every day, and hardly ever has time to get into studios to record!
As for being on Jools Holland..Wilko would blow away all the young boring indie bands he keeps having on series after series, and proves he has no say who he has on.
Now the Old Grey Whistle Test..that was a real music series, for talented musicians.
Can't believe the BBC don't repeat them from the begining in the early 70s..probably bloody copyright.
watcheed the stranglers last night in bristol. went back to the hotel for a drink and wilko bass player was there so chatted to him, mainly about the blockheads lol
I watched Wilko supporting the Stranglers in Birmingham last weekend. Brilliant! He made the evening complete for me. The bass guitarist is superb too - both worth watching as well as listening to.
Those who criticise Wilko's singing might compare him with Keith Richards. KR also used to have a different vocal style (Coming Down Again etc.) that worked with the Stones. Sadly, like Wilko, his voice has deteriorated. But there's one big difference with Wilko, the guitar playing is still completely and utterly awesome with no decline to his performance...
I saw Dr Feelgood on a thursday night in Cheltenham Town Hall, in the early 70s. About 3,000 in the audience! They were brilliant! The next night (Friday) Wilko played in the Pavillian Club with Lee Brillo on bass and a drummer, about 400 Hells Angels and bikers and he blew us all away! Apart from Alex Harvey I think Wilko is the most charismatic live performer I have ever seen!
Awesome performance. It´s a shame that here in Germany it´s quite impossible to obtain an album of the Wilko Johnson Band in a record store. It was my interest in the original Dr. Feelgood and outstanding bassist Norman Watt-Roy that lead me to this band - they just rock!
Come on guys ! That is an amazing set, great 'young' drummer, and Wilko is the all soul of Dr Feelgood, and still touring and touring, all over. He´s a great guitar player, and has a great voice, he´s not new R&B singer, he´s authentic ! And has a fucking great old fender working just like his great vintage voice, tuned and amazing...
Is that Norman Wotroy on Bass? he super bass funky guy, played in the blockheads...very suprised to see him in such a small venue...Wilko could never sing.
@written12 You're damn right, Wilko is just like Vitalstatistix !!! He's such a bad singer. As a guitarist he is still unsurpassed. He could have hired singers like Bill Hurley, Barry Master or Roger Chapman when he left Dr Feelgood, that would have made his records and gigs much better.
I could only dream of being half as good as he is!
Its a shame that they aren't that big here because they are all amazing musicians. I managed to see them in Bromsgrove in 2008 with me dad, and they are the great.
Is it irght that Dr Feelgood, Wilko, The Inmates, Eddie andthe hot Rods, Count Bishop etc... etc... used to perform at the "hope and anchor Inn" ? Where is it exactly? And Southend is it Canvey Island or what ?
I'm planning to show my children the hot spots of Dr Feelgood era. Thanks for your hints and tips
@Surcouf1789 The Hope & Anchor is a small pub in Islington's Upper Street, not far from the Town Hall. The gigs took place in the cramped & very hot basement. It was a tip, but it was magnificent too - I'm sure you know what I mean by that. I saw Wilko there with his band & also Wilko's first ever gig with The Blockheads. The pub was still there last time I looked but I don't think they have bands on anymore, but it was a major part of the London gigging circuit when Big John ran it.
Gather there was an audience and gig was planned to be released on dvd, but having contacted the guys who posted, they said Wilko wasn't happy and project shelved ....
Such a pity. I wait and hope for an eventual dvd of the band ....
Lol, when I took my girlfriend to her first Wilko Johnson gig she turned to me after a while and said with awe in her voice "look at the bass players elbow..."
It was only when I saw what looked like water dripping from a tap off Norman's right elbow that I realised the shiny silk shirt I thought he was wearing had been plain cotton when they'd started...
Been a fan of Wilko since Down By The Jetty, amazing to think he's had a solo career now for over 30 years!
This rocks. Thanx

@Bigdrinks222 I gather from The Stranglers website that it would be the Wilko Johnson band which includes Norman.

Yeah, Wilko really can't sing. But on this kind of tune, his singing has got enough character to pull it off.
Actually, I'm first discovering his solo stuff.
Any recommendations CD wise?

One of the best recent clips of Wilko I've seen - thanks for the posting! Such a pity that the proposed Dvd release of this has been shelved ...
Been a fan of the great man since the early days with Feelgood and still a brilliant musician and performer.
Superb!

What is this performance, as there is no audience?
A promotional video??
It really is class.
I have the full concert of Wilko with the Solid Senders on DVD, and it is amazing, from the German rock show Rockpalast.
It's time we had a concert of Wilko..hopefully with Monti on drums, as the band is not as powerful now without him.
