The ref's did a bad job, based on the 5-3 they should have suspected that something might go down and be ready. They need to be at the net faster after the whistle, and that would have stopped all the pushing and shoving from happening in the first place. I hope the guy who swung the stick received a match for hitting to the head ( with a stick). Although what happens happens, a better and quicker reaction from the referees would have stopped a lot going on.

Not for going Samurai on another player. Believe it or not, hockey actually is a respectable sport. Refs did a horrible job, as it is a two man system they should have both been at the net ASAP right after the whistle. Not just standing there. Also you can see there are at least two penalties on the board for the one team. The refs should have anticipated this better and have communicated so that they were ready for this. I do think it was somewhat preventable, but what happens happens. I do hope that they cancelled the game and the player in White received a match for breaking his stick.
