The day after Carter made this speech was the day BIG OIL hired Regan to campaign against green energy. Regan and his bodies then pulled the solar panels off the roof of the White House Carter had put on it and continues to go to war/s for this POISON fossil fuel we use instead of clean energy.
It is kind of sad to watch this knowing that in 30 years we have become even more dependent on Mid East oil. I now have two cars adapted to run on natural gas and one Think City electric car. I'm off gasoline for the most part. I converted my cars to alternate fuels instead of buying a mid-life crisis Harley.
If people listened to Carter, we would not be where we are today, financially. It's because of the oil industry's hijacking of energy policy that's made us dependent on a FINITE source of energy. A country dependent on a finite source of energy is FINITE itself! We're watching the beginnings now. Oil is 4x what is cost 10 years ago. Consider that a 400% tax! You can blame spending, taxes, blah blah blah but the TRUTH is that oil is OVER and we must pick up the slack and tell oil to piss off!
In decades from now, people will look back at Carter and truly revise some of the old nonsense that was concocted by the Reaganites. Carter was not necessarily the most successful president, but I would say that his legacy will be better than his successor.
@Jmjfanss: so government should never be involved in the energy business? Does ENRON mean anything to you jackass?
I was living in California when they deliberately pulled power plants offline to manufacture artificial shortages - energy prices surges several hundred percent and there were rolling blackouts.
Is this what you want?
And what exactly is your beef with the Departmentll of Energy anyway? They do cutting edge research there, that pays off in spades. For every dollar invested on Do
@JDinNYC01 Then you must know the government (state of CA) set up artificial market with price caps and structured the market (spot market instead of long term contracts they had previously)in a way that Enron could pull off the theft they did. This was directly caused by GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION. The example you give is a perfect example of why governments should stay out of the energy market.
@AmbulanceProductions Yeah and Jimmy Carter destroyed Iran and put Ayatolla in power, even bringing him back from exile and now we are paying every day for what jimmy carter did. What a national embarrassment jimmy carter is to our country. Even today I get sick as soon as I see him on Larry King selling a new book. What a coward and an American hating asshole carter is. The whole reason we have a problem with islam is because of carter. He is not a christian but he is a muslim

Because the department of energy is just as unconstitutional as the patriot act.

And now we import 2/3s of our oil and are deeply in debt to Muslim Nations. Too bad we didn't try harder to reduce our oil addiction.

Jimmy was probably the closest thing to a Christian president we ever had. Bush...not so much.

@AmbulanceProductions I know, its so ironic that the republicans took advantage of the evangelical Christians w/ Reagan.

What an incompetent president, he's the same reason we now have the U.S. Department of energy.

@jmjfanss I agree with you, but his goal (a failed goal) of ending and/or limiting our dependence on foreign oil was at least laudable.
But big govt is never the answer.

Carter doesn't sound like a commander-in-chief, more like a scolder-in-chief, lecturer-in-chief, & dipshit-in-chief at the same time.
