  • you wont see Travis Barker play like this guy..you are the real thing Virgil !!

  • I simply dont get this guy. Yes, he very good technically, can do all the parradiddles. I see that what hes doing is mathematically tough with a lot of limb independance but I dont hear anything musically extraordinary. I'm playing drums over 8 years now. It seems that any time someone is critical of him they are deemed a twit or "not a drummers drummer". I know its a matter of taste but that should also hold up folks who say this guy isnt that impressive.

  • @underatedly you're right. And this is also one of his most "musical" solo, other solos seem exercise... But nowadays he's improving is groove taste, I must admit.

  • @underatedly Well that's it really.

Generally he plays stuff that's just so technically complicated it's absolutely mind blowing to think about, let alone actually playing it.

But if you're not specifically listening for it it's easy to just sound like noise.

It's honestly nothing musically extraordinary, but technically it's leagues and leagues above everybody else.

But it's a fine line saying what is and what isn't music.

    Regardless, he's a drumming god.

  • @ViralSC2 I'd have to wonder about his intentions, are they musical are just impossible? Listening to the likes of Bozzio, Pert, Carey, even Grohl and Copeland, there is a sense of intent, arrangement, an honesty in trying to relate something thats coherent and enhancing. Theres always been a method in their madness which is was makes them genius, IMO of course. I recognize what Donati's doing, smashing the hell out of his kit and throwing in a few parradiddles, hes more of an Olympian.

  • The thing with Virgil is that he is so advanced he sounds "bad"for non drummers, because he plays stuff that impress only drummers, eventhough only few really understand what he is playing, even Thomas Lang said;"Virgil is lightyears ahead of me",guess that says something

  • you and lang are my favorite. until one of you dies, it shall remain that way.

  • virgil, will you marry me?

  • Good stuff, no doubt about it.

  • @marthy995

Well, I know that hes not technically considered a "metal" drummer.. but Neil Peart uses traditional grip from time to time.

  • Well he is very rare. Can u guys name another metal drummer that play with the "traditional" hand-grip and not "match grip"?

  • @marthy995 I think gavin harrisson sometimes does. He mostly plays match grip but i think i've seen a few videos where he does the traditional grip.

  • is this a joke? watch my drumming videos for something good

  • @bestdrummerntheworld your not arrogant are you

  • @kkovikk Dear Joey uses a quadruple pedal. For every one time he puts his foot down, he gets two strokes. Virgil, on the other hand, blows Joey out of the water with only a double pedal.

  • this man sould be knighted. .

  • I think Virgil is quite possibly the only drummer to use a double base pedal extensively, but in a incredibly creative way.

  • I don't understand why this people is just talking shit about other drummers or bands instead of enjoy a video. Is that fucking hard? Shut the fuck up if you dislike something.

  • insane

  • Joey who?

  • this guy makes the over-rated;over idolized;over blown elwood peart look like the talentless hacker emotionless "drum machine"( NOT a compilment) that he really is.Must be a boot to his ego as "the worlds greates drummer"(can you IMAGINE such a crock) that this guy and others like him exist and make him look as boring and talentless as he reslly is.You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time

  • @strangecluesinfriday both are monsters. it's a fact. You're an idiot. It's a fact as well.

  • @0235681956 WOW! That HURT.. wahhhhh. And YOUR opinion means as much to ME as mine does to you...SWEET FUCK ALL !.. lmao

  • Every drum solo has its "I'm gonna make all cymbals ring at once" part.

  • 0.22 crazy swing, love it......

  • Haha! I love the Evian product placement @ 1:00

  • Half of the solo is Vai changing T shirts

  • e aeeeeee?

    me diz alguma coisa!!!!

    isso é que é 1 baterista!

  • I used to see Virgil heaps at the Grainstore Tavern in Melbourne years ago. I stood a few feet away from him playing this stuff.

  • solo fell apart after the 1st 10 seconds

  • @mumbleye Sorry mate, I'm trying to work out if you're being sarcastic or just a troll.

  • I just sharted

  • shanoon larkin is better

  • @1369rockstar lol no

  • i just barely noticed that Charlie Sheen looks a lot like Virgil lol.

  • 3:30-3:31

  • I really think that Virgil should have gotten the spot in Dream Theater. Dream Theater would have sounded more epic compared to Black Clouds and it would be a dream lineup to see him with DT

  • Virgil Donati, the poet of drum!

  • this men is good!!!

    more that all we

  • @kkovikk Slipknot is shit, Joey is a shit and you are my bitch ¬ ¬

  • @rallyivan1234 your bitch? lol

  • any clown ,tell me he is not the best man to pick up the sticks you have seen .c,mon think about it!

  • fuck me!!....

  • MY GOD!

    JUST...

    MY GOD!

  • where is Tony Royster Jr when you need to hear a decent drum solo

  • 2:20 to 2:30

    so sexy beat :D:D

  • Thank you Dream Theater auditions for showing me the light

  • @c4p1t4lf34r Virgil would have been wasted on DT

  • The groove from 3.01 to 3.10 is GIGANTIC.

  • Looks like charlie sheen ta mee =P

  • is the first part of the solo from The Thinking Stone off of Quantum?

  • @Maddie01022 Sounded to me like Quantum Factor from the same album.

  • 3:38 Holy shit! I'd get so tired! :O

  • Quit stalking me you SOCIOPATH. Sure, I was in a burger joint & said Travis Barker's better than this dude, who sounds like a Sears Kenmore washing machine from 1978. Yeah, the manager called me a fool & slapped the burger right out of my hand. Yes, meat & cheese and secret sauce flew all over the place. Yes, somebody threw their shake on me. Yes, some chick slapped my face & stuffed my gullet full of fries while cackling like a witch & calling me a delusional crank. But, oh, my sweet Barker!

  • 2:02 :O

  • Absolutely SUBLIME :-D

    Goose bumps

  • 1:25

dont forget to buy me sigarrettes

  • Comment removed

  • Freak of nature

  • you don't audition Virgil Donati, VIRGIL DONATI AUDITIONS YOU! ,and he decides whether to play in your band or NOT!!

  • @pi2plank not in the case of dream theater though.. but i think he is too talented to play in DT....

  • @freakguitar1 why? petrucci is just as amazing in the guitar world as virgil in the the drum world, and most people seem to think the same about jordan in the prog keyboard world, and to some extent myung.

  • @BOOLsheet petrucci = portnoy skill. donati is far superior than portnoy, and i can mention a counterpart for every ohter musician as well (except maybe rudess, which is really also outstanding, but i just dont know haha).

  • @freakguitar1 thats one of the dumbest things ive ever heard. portnoy was never a technical drummer. petrucci's playing is far more technical than portnoys playing is to drums.

  • @BOOLsheet ah really? hm to me petrucci isnt a very technical guitar player too. so to me, they are equally techincal. donati is comparable to maybe guhrie govan or so, but def he is FAR superior than petrucci is on guitar and also portnoy on drums. ;)

  • @freakguitar1 all i can say is you cant compare musician with different line. i disagree with your comment

  • 41 people are fuck bags who can't play for shit.

  • WHY ???????????? is shitknot even being discussed or mentioned here?

  • what a player, respect to the virg, a true master.

  • Only drum solo video where they show the lead guitar player while its happening. ;-)

  • DT should have picked him instead of Mangini

  • @irwin3036able I disagree. Mangini has a great personality and insane chops. He'll fit in DT just fine. No disrespect to Virg though.

  • After watching this, I can safely say that Donati is too good for DT, the guys in DT (Portnoy included) are amazing players no doubt, but Donati is just on another level. I don't think the guys in DT could handle him. Same goes for Thomas Lang.

  • @lhc89 really? thomas lang fucked up the odd time signatures test.

  • Donati is much better than mangini too

  • @gdrum121 Don't be silly man! Mangini is a beast and so is Virgil...

  • @FrenchRockNRolla7 magini is an excellent drummer i agree, but Donati cant be compared to anyone in my opnion

  • @gdrum121 Each one of these elite drummers that we argue about, can't be compared to anyone. They each have their own personality and style to their playing.

  • @boxfreak007 Sure, you are right. But i am comparing technique and virgil has the most advanced technique i ever seen .

  • @gdrum121 Very true, he is a monster.

  • This man must have four independent brains.

  • jopey jordison is gay

  • im going to a virgil's clinic today im SO exited!! FUCK YEAH!! XD

  • @dogb00ts GDL?

  • INSANITY!

  • He's so good that the fucking guitarist got jealous and made himself be in like a million fucking shots in a drum solo

  • Charile Sheen is wrong. THIS guy is a total freakin rockstar from Mars.

  • sloppy.

  • @BittenMitten your dick

  • 40 people are jealous.

  • this is PROPA drumming

  • I'm really starting to wonder how the hell might be this guy's walk!!

    Lagg walking!

  • MY TEACHER SENT ME HERE :D

  • @Eatingroots lol same...

  • @Eatingroots Haha, same here! :D

  • @Eatingroots my bro got lessons from the guy who gave virgil lessons

  • oh my god.... 3:29 look at these bassdrum accents playing 32tel... i cant believe it

  • my favorite drummers are Donati and Bozzio!

  • great sound quality!!!

  • Virgil for DT. Come on, come on.

  • Aquiles Rules!!!!!!!!!

  • So far I've listened to clips of all the drummers auditioning for DT (I hadn't really heard of some of these guys before), and I can say Virgil's my favorite so far. Not only is he technical, but (in this solo at least) he plays with feeling. A good fit I feel.

  • @gretel32 I had done the same thing at the time and my favourite was and still is Thomas Lang. I laughed when the guys described him as a "powerhouse!!!" But they're all so impressive... Best TV show ever!!!!!!!!!!!! They should have auditioned Dennis Chambers. I'm sure he could have nailed it too!!!

  • So fucking proud to be australian!

  • VIRGIL IS AUDITONING FOR DT!! fuck yeah

  • @Flaitesexy But he didn't get the job :-( although I think DT's too 'machinery'-like for such an extremely creative, technical drummer as Donati is!

  • cool!...

  • The amount of innate skill and practice that went into developing his ability is simply staggering. He's true drum virtuoso. If you're not familiar with him check out some Planet X or Devil's Slingshot songs. He's also puts on a ton of clinics.

Also, the reason why we are seeing Steve changing shirts, etc is because this is from Steve's Live at the Astoria dvd. Throughout the concert he goes through several wardrobe changes and I guess they wanted to show whats going on backstage.

  • write fred grenier on youtube, if you want to see drum video!

  • noch nicht ein besseres Schlagzeug solo in youtube gefunden

haven't found a better drum solo in youtube, yet

aún no he encontrado un mejor solo de batería en youtube...

    DOOOONAAAATTTIIIIII!!!

  • well, at least he's not showy.

  • y was Steve stripping to this?!

  • This was amazing. Probably the coolest and most overwhelming musical experience I've ever had. Planet X and Meshuggah rocks my world!

  • fucking amazing!!!!!!

  • who gives a fuck what steve vai is doing during this drum solo!, Why are we watching him take off his shirt and drink water during this unbelievable solo!?!?!

  • This guy is an absolute beast. From 0:10 he plays a lick from Quantum Factor by his band Planet X. Anyone who hasn't heard them should check out their album Quantum, he DESTROYS the album.

  • fuck me!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Thats some awesome shirt changing by Steve Vai there, wow!

  • that grip is difficult to even use, but if you can master it....dear god

  • Virgual Insanity!

  • wao

  • Im a guitar man through and through, and I gotta admit, great drummers give me a hard on. So amazing!!!!!

  • pfft!! amatur! he's got his rack toms the wrong way round and he's holding the left stick wrong

  • @pdrums777 well if u are all pro you should know that his left hand isnt wrong and its called traditional grip. Also his rack toms are mounted like that because thats a type of set up settled to play rock. Virgil used to do it, kenny aronnoff mount his toms like that, Gregg bisonnette also sometimes do it...is he is an amateur, u are just a dreamer...

  • @pdrums777 lol

  • @pdrums777 What a joooooooooooooooke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • id this guy takes over for DT i wont be so sad that mike is gone

  • this guy have one of the best druming videos I'´ve ever seen. I learned a lot from it. What a shame I couldn't found anymore dvds.

  • 38 dislikes u fucknig kidding me wats there not to like

  • @tomo900 YOU! For starters for pointing out the amount of dislikes in video.

  • Yeah....i'm really glad we had that footage of guitarist drinking water over the drum solo. It was really enticing.

    Thanks. Camera man.

  • @tjdrummer13 ..lol...!!! Yeah i know what you mean... but after all, it WAS Steve's show... lol... rock on!

  • can anyone tell me a better drummer than this man! NO!

  • @TheHodgey08 Neil Peart.

  • You deserved the slap retard...Travis barker sucks compared to this guy...@joejacari

  • if you think travis barker is the best because he plays upside down who do you think he got that from? joey jordison is famous for doing the exact same thing as travis several years back. tommy lee did full flips back in the 80s, jus twatch the wild side music video. and on youtube is a video of buddy rich doing a solo while his kit is suspended by mere ropes in the air before tommy lee did it. travis is good, but not the best and definitely not original.

  • HOLY CRAP!!!! This guy is a monster!!!! Waaaaaaaaay better than Mike Porntoy! Lol And I agree he is way too good for DT...Planet X all the way...

  • "donati for dream theater plase" no thank you. It's a bit boring =/ I'd rather let him work on new stuff. See what he comes up with.

  • Love his style.

  • Man seen this over and over... But what's the fuckin wrong with me? Just couldn't nail it!!!! Bastard!

  • fucking great shit right ther... wow

  • My personal opinion......Ok...... that was Fucking SEXY!!! I never knew how much I freakin love drums until this moment........ I always knew I had this totaly insane absolute awesome kinda love, but now its a..... I totally just creamed myself... kinda love!! oooohhhh Gimme more!! Amazing!!!!.... REPLAY!!

  • from 3:00 on is just pure nastyness.

  • I think andrea vadrucci should be the next DT drummer. Virgil is to technical for DT, and too good. And yes I have 5 or six DT cds. I want Virgil to keep cranking out the bad ass solos and no lyric Planet X and experi. stuff. Besides DT is going pop these days,..

  • (points finger at Virgil) "CYBORG!!!"

  • He's playing like Buddy Rich at the end!

  • Comment removed

  • Steve Vai drinks water...?. wow- show Virgil..!!

  • yeah this is a real drummer !!!!!!!

    Not the drummer from Slipknot

Donati is better than Joey Jordison!!

  • @Appleelias I agree! Virgil's kit even sounds better.

  • @Appleelias Yeah same eschelon as danny carey, rather incredible lol

  • @Appleelias dude Joey sucks balls. For Joey reaching THIS level of drumming is like reaching the moon on his feet.

  • @Appleelias Even more, Donati is better than four professional drummers together!

  • @Appleelias somebody whos a LOT better than jordison probably gets lesson from Donati.

  • @Appleelias Like being better than Joey Jordison is some amazing feat.

  • @Appleelias joey Jordison who? :D

  • @Sephirus9000 How BrownieF1GH did say: ,,Of course he is. JJ is just a show-drummer..." :)

  • @Appleelias

Of course he is. JJ is just a show-drummer...

  • @Appleelias

Of course he is. JJ is just a show-drummer... I don't like him.

    But Donati is awesome!

  • @Appleelias actually Joey is a "real" drummer too.lol. Donati being more superior does not make Joey any less of a drummer.sorry im just sick of these haters bashing Lars, Joey, Travis etc. They may not be the best(i think they never claimed to be), but they are still talented and "real" drummers.lol.

  • @drummerspoundhard Totally agree. Virgil is a cyborg, a drum genius, but Lars wrote some incredible music in his career, and so Joey. Being open-minded is the most important thing in life.

  • @Appleelias

    nothing goes above joey!!

    slipknot rules,

  • @SatanHisLove you fag

  • @SatanHisLove slipknot sucks!

  • @rallyivan1234 im calling bullshit on this one...^^^^^ bullshit!

  • @Appleelias NO SHIT DUDE

  • @Appleelias like a million times better

  • Dear Santa:

All I want for Christmas is this guy's timing.

    Yours Truly

    Lance

  • @LanceCampeau dude this guy is a monster

  • ya know as i was listening to this, I got to thinking - what does it look like when Steve Vai is back stage?

  • come and see another drum solo just type "hughes drum solo"

  • A very boring solo.. he could use some lessons from Ian Paice

  • amaaaaazing!!!

  • drum solo from a steve vai concert?

steve vai at a drum solo more like it haha
