Hi, i found an orphaned baby opossum..its been with me like a month and now i just started giving him milk on a small plate...she did something weird today, she was making like spit bubbles at her mouth, is this normal i should i start to get worried about something weird going on? JUST WONDERING IF YOU KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
@MissDolittle Bubbles usually indicates pneumonia because liquid got into the lungs and never cleared out right. Can you try to get a hold of a professional rehabber who can give this baby the correct care and medication? It would also help the baby to grow up with other opossums so he/she can relate to their own species. If you tell me what county you are in, I'll try to find you a contact.
@justmethinkin I did a search and found an "Individual Wildlife Rehabilitator" with this phone number listed: (304) 412-8576 . Let me know if you reached somebody there and if they could help.
I DID READ ALOT ON THE DIET OF OPOSSUMS AND I REALLY DONT WANT TO FEED THE WRONG THING AND CAUSE ONE TO GET THAT BONE DISORDER, MY MOTHER KNOWS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS OF A PERSON WHO WORKS WITH BABY CRITTERS AND SHES SUPPOSED TO PASS MY NUMBER ALONG TO HER, I CARRIED THEM AROUND IN MY SHIRT FOR 3 DAYS WHEN I FIRST FOUND THEM, BUT I HAD TO GO TO WORK SO I GOT THEM A WATER BOTTLE. I WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW IT ALL TURNS OUT, THANK YOU.
@justmethinkin Let me know if I can be of any help. Send me a private message with your location and I'll try to help you find a professional. Thanks for caring!
I WOULD LOVE TO FIND SOMEONE PROFESSIONAL TO DO THIS FOR ME, BUT I FIND MYSELF LOOKING CLOSER TO EVERY OPOSUM I SEE HIT ON THE ROAD NOW, I HAVE A FEELING THIS WONT BE MY LAST TIME DOING THIS. I WAS READING ON THE INTERNET ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THEM AND HOW TO SAFELY RETURN THEM TO THE WILD. BY WHAT I CAN FIND THEY ARE ABOUT 8 WEEKS OLD, THEY DO EAT, JUST SEEMS AS THOUGH THEY SHOULD BE EATING MORE, AND I WAS WORRIED. I KEEP A HOT WATER BOTTLE WITH THEM. IM DOING ALL I CAN.
@justmethinkin Your heart is on the right spot, I can tell, however it is illegal in the US to do help these critters without a State permit. Just kitten milk isn't enough for a diet, there are supplements needed. Please get in touch with a licensed rehabilitator in your area that can teach you how to do it right. If you would live close to me, I'd welcome your assistance and intentions any day! Not many folks are willing to make such commitment.
MY DAUGHTER AND I FOUND 3 BABY OPOSSUMS CLINGING TO THEIR MOTHERS BODY IN THE ROAD 8 DAYS AGO, I HAVE BEEN FEEDING THEM KITTEN MILK I BOUGHT AT THE FEED STORE, IT DOESNT SEEM LIKE THEY EAT MUCH AT ALL, IM AFFRAID IM NOT FEEDING THEM ENOUGH..........BUT THEY HAVE PLENTY OF ENERGY WHEN THEY ARE AWAKE. HOW MUCH DO THEY NEED TO EAT TO SURVIVE?
@justmethinkin Thank you for taking care of them! It all depends how much they weigh. Please try to find a professional wildlife rehabilitator who is trained to take care of these infants. It's not as easy as it looks to raise these little critters.
We had an Opposum come by the house every night for dinner, for over a year. Then we just stopped seeing him, and we heard that they only live 3 years. We were very happy that we gave him food for over a year. He was very nice, would just show up for dinner, hang around a bit and then go away. We think they are very sweet and harmless.....i'd LOVE to have one of those babies.
We had two baby possums living in our basement, and we trapped them and turned them loose outside. Now they are fully grown and come to our back door every evening for dinner. We give them cat food and table scraps. They eat anything. They live under out big propane tank and we will let them stay there as long as they want.
I had an adult possum that hung around my former apartment. That ghostlhy face peering at me from the roof at night scared me to death a few times but he was neat :)
I have opossums coming to my door at night. They are cute. I don't want to pet them!
