I guess THis is Us Kids WHo grew UP in the 80's and are all now about 30 something and to those who saw it know how great a film this really is.. THe music ,AND movie and the ending IS MY heart FOrver !! wish it would have happened but never did . Without LOVe LIFe aint worth living........ !! Bring back the 80;s PLeASE !
I've now bought the soundtrack to this movie four times, after losing/wearing out three cassettes and finally moving on to the CD. This was my favorite scene in the movie. Thank you for uploading this.
Whether losing a battle with a malicious ghost in a ghetto (Candyman) or getting caught up in a war between heaven and hell (The Prophecy) steamy, sexy Virginia Madsen is always beautiful...but never so lovely as in this wonderful scene from an an underrated movie.
Wow. I thought I was the only person I knew who thought this scene/song was super incredible. The wonder if YouTube - it wasn't just me, this IS as great as I thought it was in the 80s!
The film was ahead of it's time. This is back before cell phones and the idea of a computer that communicates with you on the range that Edgar does is now quite possible.
One of my favorites from childhood. Music is universal, love is universal.
@cookie123456789012 Not really, no! It's just that it develops it's own personality and discovers love. He then gets jealous that Miles (his owner) has a girl (Madeline) and he doesn't. You should really watch this. It's awesome! :)
This is my favouritte film ever, it made me laugh, it made me cry, it reminds me when i use those kind of computers, it was a great part of my life, i think I watched the movie more than 50 times. thanks to new techn all can see it now

@cookie123456789012 The computer gets a little scary when it gets angry knowing that Miles is taking credit for its work in order to woo the girl, but in the end, it evolves and everything comes out fine...but it really is a sweet movie with a great ending, (especially if you believe nothing really ever dies and we are all energy anyway.)
@cookie123456789012 How Could You Even Think That The Computer Would Be The Bad Guy.
He is Only Wanting To Feel The Emotion of Real Love That He Has Been Missing Out. A Computer Who Has a Chip on His Shoulder ;) More Like it, But After All Said and Done at The End of The Day, The Computer Know's His Love is Only Artificial And To Move Over And Let Real Love Take Over Can You Hear Me Down There (^_~)

Its a movie that hits well above its weight range.........a cut above the average inane eighties nonsense. This is the third best musical "duel" in cinema history after deliverence and unfaithfully yours. I cried at the end when Edgar commits suicide. Mind you......if i was Miles and i had to choose between a seriously screwed up eighties computer and Virginia Madsen, I know which i would choose!

Wow... the memories this brings back! I spent HOURS after watching this movie on my Commodore 64 writing lines and lines of code to "POKE" music notes into the TED chip so I could get the computer to play this song. It was excruciating work, as anyone who remembers sound programming on the C64 can attest!
And who didn't fall in love with Virginia Madsen during this scene? I mean seriously? She's so beautiful in this film.

It was later adapted by 1960s song writers Sandy Linzer and Danny Randall for the Song,"Lovers Concerto" for The Toys the 1960s girl group which became a # 2 hit on the Billboard Charts in 1965! This song was in4/4 time, instead of 3/4 time by J.S. Bach!
I love the rare version by The Fleetwoods of the song Lovers' Concerto because they use a harpsichord which blends with their great vocals!

Thank you for your upload of this. But by any chance, can you also upload the movie intro? I can remember from the 80's that the intro was pretty interesting and had the 'Electric Dreams' song on it.
Did they ever release it on DVD in the first place, remastered or otherwise? My VHS went missing. I'd like to buy a new copy but it just doesn't seem to be available anywhere.
They did release a DVD, in fact Amazon lists it but it is currently unavailable, try rare movie dvd or classic time video websites they were both listing it not too long ago
Gracias and Thanks!! this video take me back on the 80's,because of this "high tech" movies on that time i was involved on computer programing in Mexico and USA,thanks for put this video again... remember the movie "war games"?..
Wow! Is this the birth of Classical-Techno-acoustic Fusion? Thanks for uploading! I failed to see this movie when I was in my early teens(in the Philippines)...I'll look for DVD's to see it now!
I thought this was the best scene in the movie as well. After I saw it for the first time when the move first came out, I heard the Lover's Concerto by the Toys set to this same classical song.
I see what what you mean. i saw the movie, they show her talking, but she is actually at the vent you she speaks, the clips were just too slow, that's why.
The PC is becoming self-aware. It's been left to run a program while the owner's at work. Upstairs, a neighbour practices. The PC hears her through the vents and starts jamming with her.
The cello piece played by Madeline in the song "The Duel" is the Minuet #4 in G (BWV Anh.II.114) from "Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach" by Christian Petzold (formerly attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach).
If u r reading this, then u will find a dead bloody body hanging in ur closet. U will be haunted and killed by her. to stop it posti this to 6 other videos in 30 GOOD LUCK
No sir...I must disagree.......if two swordsmen fight in a field this is not a duet...but a duel.....I think although they are playing together they are also playing against each other.......I do take your point, but I am afraid you are wrong!!!!
Check out the song Duelling Banjos. It features two banjos. Technically two instruments played together is normally called a duet. but in this case they are competing against each other, like in a duel. Also as in this song. Sorry Essefen.
I haven't heard this piece since I first saw the movie at the drive-in, South Africa, 1984, but I never forgot about it because of the way it made me feel. Imagine if they remade this movie, they'd drum 'n' bass this bit, or something!
The movie finally got re-released on DVD in the UK this week! Amazon has it - still awaiting the US release...
This segment is like the original Garage Band!
Anyone remember the 1968 LP "Switched On Bach" on the Moog Synthesizer?
The story in Electric Dreams is loosely based on a short story by Kurt Vonnegut - "EPICAC" from his book "Welcome to the Monkey House". It was the first story to feature the fictional EPICAC computer later used in Vonnegut's novel Player Piano in 1952.
The world was much happier place in the 80s!

Let's cross our fingers that youtube won't forbid it of being displayed.

@woof359
Did they ever release it on DVD in the first place, remastered or otherwise? My VHS went missing. I'd like to buy a new copy but it just doesn't seem to be available anywhere.
Kivrin9 2 years ago
They did release a DVD, in fact Amazon lists it but it is currently unavailable, try rare movie dvd or classic time video websites they were both listing it not too long ago

I thought this was the best scene in the movie as well. After I saw it for the first time when the move first came out, I heard the Lover's Concerto by the Toys set to this same classical song.

The PC is becoming self-aware. It's been left to run a program while the owner's at work. Upstairs, a neighbour practices. The PC hears her through the vents and starts jamming with her.
Electric Dreams was a great movie, very sweet.

Hmmm, it sounds better on the movie than it does on the soundtrack.
moccalou 2 years ago 8
@moccalou
Yeah, on the soundtrack, the cello was done with a synthesizer, and it's not really a duel anymore...

what is this piece of music?
Is it pachelbels cannon in d major?
PrincesJennifer5 2 years ago
The cello piece played by Madeline in the song "The Duel" is the Minuet #4 in G (BWV Anh.II.114) from "Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach" by Christian Petzold (formerly attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach).

Minuet in G by Bach I believe
djtomr941 2 years ago
Couldn't we just call a truce and say it's both a duel and a duet? XD

Duet, not duel
Essefen 2 years ago
Well, even though they are playing as a duet, the song name is indeed "The Duel".
rsaffi 2 years ago
This is true...it's called " The Duel"....Essefen you have made yourself look foolish....hang your head in shame!!!!!!
bigpete2378 2 years ago
You first.
My point is it SHOULD be called "The Duet" as they are playing together, they are not competiting in a "duel"
Essefen 2 years ago
No sir...I must disagree.......if two swordsmen fight in a field this is not a duet...but a duel.....I think although they are playing together they are also playing against each other.......I do take your point, but I am afraid you are wrong!!!!
bigpete2378 2 years ago
Check out the song Duelling Banjos. It features two banjos. Technically two instruments played together is normally called a duet. but in this case they are competing against each other, like in a duel. Also as in this song. Sorry Essefen.

I haven't heard this piece since I first saw the movie at the drive-in, South Africa, 1984, but I never forgot about it because of the way it made me feel. Imagine if they remade this movie, they'd drum 'n' bass this bit, or something!
Sledge101 2 years ago
The movie finally got re-released on DVD in the UK this week! Amazon has it - still awaiting the US release...
This segment is like the original Garage Band!
Anyone remember the 1968 LP "Switched On Bach" on the Moog Synthesizer?
The story in Electric Dreams is loosely based on a short story by Kurt Vonnegut - "EPICAC" from his book "Welcome to the Monkey House". It was the first story to feature the fictional EPICAC computer later used in Vonnegut's novel Player Piano in 1952.
