Peiper is a great combat leader. I think he gets a raw deal in these proceedings. His unit had been replaced and refitted prior to Ardennes operation with young, rabid, and impulsive soldiers many of which had been exposed to victims of Allied "terror" bombing of German city of Dresden prior to deployment with Peiper's unit. This in addition to fact that he isn't even at Malmedy when massacre occurs should have been strong mitigating factors.

Another disturbing thing that I have noticed and found somewhat humiliating for the accused German combat troops during war crime trials like that is that their uniforms are entirely stripped of unit insignias, military ranks and decorations they have been awarded during their time of service, while the judges and prosecutors are wearing their countries full uniform and are addressed with their respective military ranks.

IMHO, it is very strange that no judges from neutral countries were present back then that would have brought some "fairness" and a different perspective into the trials. If such a thing would have taken place, I suspect, a lot of stuff would not even have made it to the courts, because the victors themselves would be mightily embarrassed at times.
