  • what size hook are you using?

  • @usmcrebelchick It may be a G or H. I can't see the size and I have several hooks that color.

  • My first attempt at this was not very good. I also was a little confused to your foundation chain. I added an extra 3 chains before I made my first star, it seemed to work well. The thing I find most confusing is trying to figure out exactly into what loops you are pushing your yarn through on the previous stitch, but I think I may have it figured out. Thank you for posting this, I am using it to make a christmas present for someone and the stitch itself is beautiful. :)

  • what kind of hook do you use? i don't mean size, i mean the brand. i have been looking all over for that kind of aluminum hooks in stores but they don't sell them here. do you have a link where i could get those online? i am itching to try if i can work better with those than the ones i have. thanks in advance!

  • @ezmeraldav

You can get them at any craft store. Michaels, MJDesigns, Walmart, online you can get them at any crochet store online or at a shop. The ones that I use are made by Bolye. Good Luch

  • @ezmeraldav I have been using Boye Crochet Hooks for over 28 years. You can find them on Ebay and other online craft sites.

  • I am having a problem with the multiple of 2 plus three as well...I am a beginner and I want to make a throw for my daughter with this stitch and if your chain is 24 then I too am confused.....I know nothing about reworking a pattern or fixing stitches, if my chain is to long will it still work? If I get to the end and it does not work out like you are instructing, what do I do...I know things are not perfect, but I would like to get it to look like your 6 inch square...Heeeeelp me please.....

  • The sound dies at 1:33 . Any way to repair or repost?

  • @rwilpop There is no sound when it is in slow motion. There is sound when it returns to regular speed.

  • Please explain how you calculate the number of stitches needed... You say a multiple of 2 plus 3... and you have 24 chains... I cannot figure out how you are getting 24 chains? 24 - 3 =21 so if it was a multiple of 2 you should have even stitches... I'm totally confused... Please clarify.

  • @lori1551 I got 24 chains because I crocheted an extra chain when I did the tutorial. Don't worry about extra chains or getting an exact amount on the foundation. The extra chains can be sewn in or unraveled and the tail sewn in.

  • @tjw1963 Thanks for clarification.... I find I stumble so many times with figuring out how to calculate my chains in patterns,,, and often I mess up... and like you suggest if it doesn't work out I just unravel the extra stitches... Cheers

  • @lori1551 There is no reason to re-work the foundation stitches trying to get them exact with the chain. I have been crochet all these years and will not get them exact half of the time. So often I hear people telling me they re-work the whole foundation trying to get it exact, when there is no reason to be exact. I never count a chain anymore. I just chain the width I need and modify the extra chain.

  • Can I made this pattern for scraf? It was very pretty.

Thank You fro share this video.

  • @mystarmoonsun This stitch will make a very nice scarf

  • I would like to know what the difference is between the star stich and the galaxy stitch.

  • I want to use this stitch to make a baby blanket for a coworker. I have Snuggly Wuggly yarn but it says to use size F hook. Will that work? PS--Thank you for all your great videos. You make this craft so easy to learn!

  • I am clearly doing something wrong! I want to do this so bad for my friends baby shower but it's not turning into a blanket its a complete circle!! I keep losing several stars per line and have no clue what I'm doing wrong!

  • Thanks so much, i think i forgot to hit post lol

  • Hi, i ordered yarn but i's softee bulky, i have the large gold hook you're using, i'm trying but am finding my chains need to be a lot bigger, can you tell me how many chain's i should use for a nice size afghan, thanks so much

  • @myna102 I will estimate a chain of 175

  • Just want to say "thanks", Teresa, for all the work you do to make free crochet instructions and videos available to us mere mortals. I appreciate it greatly when I need to do a project, or learn something new. pat, in jersey

  • @psdumas I appreciate the comment, thank you!

  • Could you explain what you mean by 'multiples of +2 and +3'?

  • @reachdsiss Multiple is how many chains are needed to make the stitch. The +plus amount is done just one time.

  • If the multiple is 2+3, how do you get 24?

  • @KingLeoChannel I am able to make it work with +2 and +3

  • How do you increase with a star stitch? I"m trying to make a beret with the marguerite stitch/star stitch and the written instructions aren't great at explaining it;

  • @irisx I increase on the half double crochet row. I do have a star stitch cap posted. Do a keyword search with the following words and the cap will come up - Crochet Star Stitch Hat Cap

  • could never do this stich, until now with your wonderful video.

    Theresa you are the best.

  • @angie579 I appreciate the comment! The crochet star stitch is a beautiful stitch!

  • Your videos are the best on youtube for beginners!!

  • @lameexcuse17 Thank you. I am currently remaking and uploading beginner video to my youtube channel CROCHET. You will find a lot of slow motion with extended explanation.

  • Hi! I have a quick question. If it is a multiple of 2+3 then how does 24 chains work? Should't you have an odd number of chains?

  • May I ask what size hook you are using?

  • @lexandlilsmomma1022 Size I/5.5mm

  • Hello Theresa, I love your work, but I'm having some problems with the number of chains to begin some of your projects, because i'm portuguese and the yarn in my country are different, and i don't now how to convert them. For exemple i want to make a children hat, how many chains to begin?

    kisses

  • If I wanted to make a baby blanket, how many chains would I have to make in order for it to end correctly?

  • @OURVasquezFAM I am estimating 151 but there are no guarantees that everything will come out exact. The multiple is posted on my crochet blog.

  • @tjw1963 Yeah, I went to the blog and saw that. I'm kind of new to this and not sure how the calculations work. If you could explain that to me I would very much appreciate. Also, If there is extra yarn left on the chain how do I fix it. Thanks for taking the time to explain this to me!

  • Mine looks more like a slanted parallelogram than a square...how do I correct this? Any ideas?

  • You will want to count to make sure you are not missing any stitches or adding to many.

  • thanks so muchhhhh.

  • I want to use this stitch to make a strap for a bag I'm making but i have no idea how long the chain is gonna have to be. What do I do? :)

  • Crochet it to the length that you want it to be. It takes two chains to make one star stitch, which is the multiple. You can sew in extra chains if you happen to have one left over.

  • Thanks so much for posting this tutorial! It clears up the problems I was having understanding how to do this stitch.

  • what size needle do i use for this?

  • You can make this stitch with any size hook.

  • I've happened upon your videos--at different time--during online searches. I LOVE them. ...wonderfully clear!

  • Thank you for the comment.

  • It took a couple tries before I could figure out how much tension to use in the stitches. I tend to crochet pretty tightly so I had to relax my hand a bit on this one in order to have enough room to get the hook through the side stitch on each of the stars. I am going to make my one year old a cuddly blanket and my five year old a little hat using this stitch. Thanks so much Teresa!!!!

  • Keep practicing and you will get the hang of the stitch. I appreciate the comment, Happy crocheting.

  • Sometimes mine scrunches together and isnt straight am I pulling too tight???

  • It could be that the stitches are to tight, not in the right place or not enough have been done.

  • thanks for the reply now my probllem is it went into a shape like a rainbow even though it wasn't tight and all lines were even??????

  • It is really hard for me to know what is happening. I would suggest that you keep practicing and you will get it.

  • once again, you've made it look so simple and have given wonderful, clear instructions. I've learned a new stitch!! Thanks so much, Teresa! 5 crocheted stars for you!! :D

  • You are welcome. I appreciate the comment, thank you. Happy crocheting!! :)

  • What do you mean by multiple is 2+3

  • You have to have some many chains to make each star. For this pattern stitch it is 2. For each star you want to make, add 2 extra chains. The 3 is done only 1 time in the beginning to make up the difference for an odd amount of chains.

  • When you do your stitches, any of them, just regular single stitch or double or this one, do you do it fairly loose or tight. It looks tight, but seems loose. I ended up having to put a bandaide on my left index finger cause the yarn seemed to saw my skin raw, and my dad said it's cause I'm holding it to tight, however I feel that it seems to look nicer if the stitches are tighter, and i can keep them more even.

  • I have never had a problem with yarn cutting my finger but I have with thread. I change my stitch tension all the time so it is never the same. Some stitches look better with a looser tension. Some look better with tighter tension. I will send you the recent video I did on tension. Most of the time I am in between but it shows the range of how tight or how loose I will crochet.

  • Thank you so much for clearly explaining this beautiful stitch. :)

  • You are welcome.

  • Hello again! I have been browsing through patterns and was wondering if the marguerite stitch is infact the same as the star stitch. I couldnt help but notice the similarities and was curious if this was my imagination. I knew that you would be able to maybe clear this up for me. THANKS a keep teaching us...YAY

  • I have never heard it called the marguerite stitch but that does not mean it is not known by that name too. Some crochet stitches have several different names.

  • Yes, the Marguerite and the Star are actually the same stitch, just depends on what part of the world you live in (or who taught you, eh?) . Happy Day!

  • I Love this stitch! It looks really pretty and I also like how slow motion the video was it was easy to follow!

  • Thank you, I appreciate your comments and feedback. :)

  • Thanks :)

im 13 and i wanted to make sumthing for my mom :P

it was pretty easy to understand :D

    Thanks so much^^

  • You are welcome.

  • Hi, just love your videos, they are so easy to follow, I'm making all kinds of new stitches, and I love it...just wondering if you could show how to make a trim around this...seems a little hard for me...

  • What kind of trim are you looking for?

  • That is just beautiful! I'm going to do that one :) Thank you

  • You state "the multiple is 2 plus 3. I have a chain of 24." That is not correct, mathematically. I'm not trying to be mean, but I would like to know the correct multiple, please. That also might be why BabyButtaCup is having a problem with the last chain stitch.

The video is great. Thank you for taking your time to produce it.

  • You are welcome. The multiple is correct. I used a chain of 24 in the video and my square came out correct. The idea for this video is to show how to do the stitch. It can be done with an odd or even number as I explained below and come out correct. You can share the last stitch or use an extra chain. There is a lot of flexibility in crochet and this is a good example.

  • this is a gorgeous stitch!! thanks for introducing me to it. I think I may try it tomorrow!! : ) I went out to wal mart tonight to pick up some yarn so I would have new colors. I'm pretty bored with my current colors. : )

  • My crochet blog shows the front and back side of the star stitch. The back will look different than the front.

  • this is brilliant !!!!! thanks again for another great lesson... I have been crocheting for over 6 years and i am still learning from your great video's and it is so much more fun than trying to figure somthing out from a book ;)

  • Thank you. :)

  • can you show me a view from the back cause mine looks messy on the back and i want to know if that's normal or i messed this up... thx so much i also am confused by one more thing...once i completed my first star i know where to pick up the first two loops but i can't tell from the video where i pick up the third loop..is it on the main chain or in between the star part?...ugh sorry i don't know how to explain it...thx for answering all my questions...u make it look soooo easy

  • With this stitch there is a backside and it will look different. 1 loop is on the hook to start, 3 loops are added between the square and chain 3. 2 loops are added on the main section of the project for a total of 6 loops. Just keep practicing and you will get it.

  • I have an image on my crochet blog of the front and back of the star stitch. The link is in more info to the right of the video.

  • at the end of the first row is there a last loop where you put the half-double crochet or do you put the half-double crochet on a loop that was already used when pulling the 6 loops through...ugh, i hope that made sense ...what i'm trying to say is that after you're at the end of the first row and you've pulled through the last six chains, is there another loop on the chain where u put the final double crochet or are you using the 24th chain twice?

  • You can do it either way. If you are lucky and your multiple comes out correct, you put the half-double crochet in the extra chain. Otherwise, you can share the last chain and it will still be correct. Either way is right. I have done it both ways and it looks the same.

  • can you do a how to crochet a flower

  • I know I have at least three flower "How To's" right now.

  • Is it possible to use this stitch in the round?

  • Almost any stitch can be done in a circle as long as you increase. I already have some thoughts on how this may be done. I will experiment and do a tutorial if my experiment works. This stitch would make a very pretty floor rug or a cap.

  • I do have a flat pouch tutorial coming up with this stitch. It is done in a round but not a round that gets larger like a rug would. The video had slipped my mind but I can safely say that it can be done in a round now that I think about it.

  • I am attempting this stitch as a plastic grocery bag holder with ruffles on both ends and drawstrings to close it.

  • Most definately you can do it that way. That is the general idea on how I made the small pouch. I wanted to get the stitch up before I put up the pouch since this stitch is different than my other star stitch. You will be slip stitching between your starting points on each row. It is pretty easy to accomplish once you get the hang of it.
