What it means by not conforming to the world is that we are to walk a Holy life. Jesus lived in the world, but was not "of" the world, and we are called to be like him. Yes, we are to fit into society, but not to follow the moral guidelines of the world or the way that the world thinks, that is different.

I don't think we were called to fit into society, as a man made institution, at all. I think most of Romans can be summed up as 'Love God and do what you want'.
